An optical system for gaseous chloroform (CHCl3) detection based on wavelength modulation photoacoustic spectroscopy (WMPAS) is proposed for the first time by using a distributed feedback (DFB) laser with a center wavelength of 1683 nm where chloroform has strong and complex absorption peaks. The WMPAS sensor developed possesses the advantages of having a simple structure, high-sensitivity, and direct measurement. A resonant cavity made of stainless steel with a resonant frequency of 6390 Hz was utilized, and eight microphones were located at the middle of the resonator at uniform intervals to collect the sound signal. All of the devices were integrated into an instrument box for practical applications. The performance of the WMPAS sensor was experimentally demonstrated with the measurement of different concentrations of chloroform from 63 to 625 ppm. A linear coefficient R2 of 0.999 and a detection sensitivity of 0.28 ppm with a time period of 20 s were achieved at room temperature (around 20 °C) and atmosphere pressure. Long-time continuous monitoring for a fixed concentration of chloroform gas was carried out to demonstrate the excellent stability of the system. The performance of the system shows great practical value for the detection of chloroform gas in industrial applications.

AbstractDetection of electromagnetic signals for applications such as health, product quality monitoring or astronomy requires highly responsive and wavelength selective devices. Photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors have been shown to achieve high quantum efficiencies mainly in the visible range. Much less research has been focused on realizing near-infrared narrowband devices. Here, we demonstrate fully vacuum-processed narrow- and broadband photomultiplication-type organic photodetectors. Devices are based on enhanced hole injection leading to a maximum external quantum efficiency of almost 2000% at −10 V for the broadband device. The photomultiplicative effect is also observed in the charge-transfer state absorption region. By making use of an optical cavity device architecture, we enhance the charge-transfer response and demonstrate a wavelength tunable narrowband photomultiplication-type organic photodetector with external quantum efficiencies superior to those of pin-devices. The presented concept can further improve the performance of photodetectors based on the absorption of charge-transfer states, which were so far limited by the low external quantum efficiency provided by these devices.

This paper describes the preparation and spectral properties of a near-infrared fluorophore in which two bis(2-picolyl)amino moieties are axially linked to a silicon(IV) phthalocyanine core. The effects of various metal ions on its absorption and fluorescence spectra have been examined. The results indicate that this compound shows a high sensitivity and moderate selectivity toward Zn2+ ion.

Abstract We have developed a multiplex Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscope effective for low-wavenumber measurement by combining a high-repetition supercontinuum light source of 1064 nm and an infrared high-sensitivity InGaAs diode array. This system could observe the low-wavenumber region down to 55 cm-1 with high sensitivity. In addition, using spectrum shaping and spectrum modulation techniques, we simultaneously realized a wide bandwidth (<1800 cm-1), high wavenumber resolution (9 cm-1), high efficiency, and increasing signal to noise ratio by reducing the effect of the background shape in low-wavenumber region. Spatial variation of a sulfur crystal phase transition with metastable states was visualized.

Abstract Gas sensors with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, high selectivity, fast response, and small footprint are desirable across a broad range of applications in energy, environment, safety, and public health. However, designing a compact gas sensor with ultra-high sensitivity and ultra-wide dynamic range remains a challenge. Laser-based photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is a promising candidate to fill this gap. Herein, we report a novel method to simultaneously enhance the acoustic and light waves for PAS using integrated optical and acoustic resonators. This increases sensitivity by more than two orders of magnitude and extends the dynamic range by more than three orders of magnitude, compared with the state-of-the-art photoacoustic gas sensors. We demonstrate the concept by exploiting a near-infrared absorption line of acetylene (C2H2) at 1531.59 nm, achieving a detection limit of 0.5 parts-per-trillion (ppt), a noise equivalent absorption (NEA) of 5.7×10-13 cm-1 and a linear dynamic range of eight orders of magnitude. This study enables the realization of compact ultra-sensitive and ultra-wide-dynamic-range gas sensors in a number of different fields.
