We report on periodic, homogeneous nanoripples fabricated on stainless steel (SS), copper (Cu), and aluminum (Al) substrates using an ytterbium pulsed femtosecond laser. These structures called laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are processed at a relatively high-speed and over large areas. This paper investigates the effect of LIPSS on a wettability behavior of SS, Cu, and Al surfaces. It is shown that nanoripples significantly influenced the wettability character of these metals turning them from hydrophilic to hydrophobic behavior.

Ultra-short pulsed laser ablation of stainless steel is accompanied by the evolution of different microstructures. Depending on the fuence, accumulated energy and number of laser passes cones from impurities, laser induced periodic surface structures and conelike protrusion (CLP) evolve at the surface. These often unwanted morphologies can be inhibited by carefully choosing the strategy and laser parameters. Here, the identifed region shows a small processing window fordesigned 515nm sub 1 ps ablation leading to low surface roughness. CLP are still not well understood and here a pre-cursor structure is reported. Subsequently, the CLP growth is grain orientation and polarization dependent and studied in more depth. Preferentially, CLP start to evolve at the (101) grain orientations with linear polarized laser radiation. Moreover, a nanoindentation study reveals robust mechanical properties, which could be beneficial for tribology applications in the hydrodynamic regime.

Controlling laser induced surface morphology is essential for developing specialized functional surfaces. This work presents novel, multi-scale periodic patterns with two-dimensional symmetry generated on stainless steel, polyimide and sapphire. The microstructures were realized by combining Direct Laser Interference Patterning with the generation of Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures in a one-step process. An industrial, fiber femtosecond laser source emitting at 1030 nm with a pulse duration of 500 fs was utilized for the experiments. In the case of stainless steel, it was possible to create line-like or pillar-like surface patterns by rotating the polarization orientation with respect to the interference pattern. In the case of polyimide and sapphire, the absorption of the laser radiation was promoted by a multiphoton mechanism. In polyimide, grooves and pillars of several microns in depth were produced over an area much larger than the spot size. Finally, for sapphire, the simultaneous generation of interference-like pattern and laser induced periodic surface structures was realized. The results reported here provide valuable data on the feasibility to combine two state-of-the-art techniques with an industrial apparatus, to control the induced surface morphology.

Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, ripples) with ~500–700 nm period were produced on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surfaces upon scan processing in air by a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. The tribological performance of the surfaces were qualified in linear reciprocating sliding tribological tests against balls made of different materials using different oil-based lubricants. The corresponding wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy and confocal profilometry. Extending our previous work, we studied the admixture of the additive 2-ethylhexyl-zinc-dithiophosphate to a base oil containing only anti-oxidants and temperature stabilizers. The presence of this additive along with the variation of the chemical composition of the counterbodies allows us to explore the synergy of the additive with the laser-oxidized nanostructures.

The most notable behavioral change is observed for SS and Al, where strong hydrophobicity is observed after the generation of LIPSS.
