CO2 is a harmful greenhouse gas, a product of chemical emissions, the combustion of fossil fuels and car exhausts, and it is a widely available source of carbon. The review considers various ways of hydrogenation of carbon dioxide into components of motor fuels - methanol, dimethyl ether, ethanol, hydrocarbons - in the presence of heterogeneous catalysts. At each route of conversion of CO2 (into oxygenates or hydrocarbons) the first stage is the formation of CO by the reverse water gas shift (rWGS) reaction, which must be taken into account when catalysts of process are choosing. The influence of chemical nature, specific surface area, particle size and interaction between catalyst components, as well as the method of its production on the CO2 conversion processes is analyzed. It is noted that the main active components of CO2 conversion into methanol are copper atoms and ions which interact with the oxide components of the catalyst. There is a positive effect of other metals oxides additives with strong basic centers on the surface on the activity of the traditional copper-zinc-aluminum oxide catalyst for the synthesis of methanol from the synthesis gas. The most active catalysts for the synthesis of DME from CO2 and H2 are bifunctional. These catalysts contain both a methanol synthesis catalyst and a dehydrating component, such as mesoporous zeolites with acid centers of weak and medium strength, evenly distributed on the surface. The synthesis of gasoline hydrocarbons (≥ C5) is carried out through the formation of CO or CH3OH and DME as intermediates on multifunctional catalysts, which also contain zeolites. Hydrogenation of CO2 into ethanol can be considered as an alternative to the synthesis of ethanol through the hydration of ethylene. High activation energy of carbon dioxide, harsh synthesis conditions as well as high selectivity for hydrocarbons, in particular methane remains the main problems. Further increase of selectivity and efficiency of carbon dioxide hydrogenation processes involves the use of nanocatalysts taking into account the mechanism of CO2 conversion reactions, development of methods for removing excess water as a by-product from the reaction zone and increasing catalyst stability over time.

Anion effect on alkali ion-crown complex formation in a moderately concentrated solutions: A sensitive probe of hidden interionic interactions operating in dissociating protic solvents

A powerful anion effect destabilizing alkali ion-crown complex formation has been found to operate in moderately concentrated protic (H2O, CH3OH, C2H5OH) solution, following the order HO- > AcO- > Cl- > Br- > NO3- > I- > NCS-. Evidence is provided that the observed effect does not originate from ion-pairing. A simple explanation is provided in terms of concordant hydrogen bond bridges of exalted stability between the gegenions, M+···OR-H···(OR-H)n···OR-H···A-. It is proposed that encapsulation of alkali ion by the macrocyclic ligand leads to a dissipation of the cation charge density destroying its ability to participate in the hydrogen bond bridge. An opposition against the alkali ion-crown complex formation arises accordingly in the solution in dependence on strength of the hydrogen bridge; for a given cation, the hydrogen bond strength increases with increasing anion charge density from NCS- to HO-(RO-). It is pointed out, at the same time, that the observed anion effect does not correlate with the known values of activity coefficients of the individual alkali salts which are almost insensitive to anion variation under the investigated conditions. As a resolution of the apparent paradoxon it is proposed that, in absence of the macrocyclic ligand, the stabilizing (concordant) bonding between the gegenions is nearly balanced by a destabilizing (discordant) hydrogen bonding between the ions of same charge (co-ions). Intrinsic differences among the individual salts are thus submerged in protic solvents and become apparent only when the concordant bonding is suppressed in the alkali ion-crown complex formation.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction is a promising carbon capture and utilisation technology. Herein, a continuous flow gas diffusion electrode (GDE)-cell configuration has been studied to convert CO2 via electrochemical reduction under atmospheric conditions. To this purpose, Cu-based electrocatalysts immobilised on a porous and conductive GDE have been tested. Many system variables have been evaluated to find the most promising conditions able to lead to increased production of CO2 reduction liquid products, specifically: applied potentials, catalyst loading, Nafion content, KHCO3 electrolyte concentration, and the presence of metal oxides, like ZnO or/and Al2O3. In particular, the CO productivity increased at the lowest Nafion content of 15%, leading to syngas with an H2/CO ratio of ~1. Meanwhile, at the highest Nafion content (45%), C2+ products formation has been increased, and the CO selectivity has been decreased by 80%. The reported results revealed that the liquid crossover through the GDE highly impacts CO2 diffusion to the catalyst active sites, thus reducing the CO2 conversion efficiency. Through mathematical modelling, it has been confirmed that the increase of the local pH, coupled to the electrode-wetting, promotes the formation of bicarbonate species that deactivate the catalysts surface, hindering the mechanisms for the C2+ liquid products generation. These results want to shine the spotlight on kinetics and transport limitations, shifting the focus from catalytic activity of materials to other involved factors.

Efficient activation of CO2 at low temperature was achieved by reverse water–gas shift via chemical looping (RWGS-CL) by virtue of fast oxygen ion migration in a Cu–In structured oxide, even at lower temperatures.
