In order to determine the origin of optical limiting in singlewall carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions, we carried out Z-scan and pump-probe experiments at 532 nm and 1064 nm, for different input energies. We evidenced strong nonlinear scattering due to heat transfer from the carbon nanotubes to solvent which induced solvent bubble growth and a nonlinear refractive effect. We noticed similar comportment at 1064 nm and at 532 nm, but with a lower bubble growth threshold at 532 nm. At the microsecond timescale, we evidenced cavitation bubbles. We also evidenced, via emission studies, a phase change corresponding to optical limiting threshold, which we associated to carbon nanotube sublimation. Optical limiting performances of water and chloroform suspensions were compared and solvent effects are discussed.

Abstract Water and sand were used as the medium of multiwall carbon nanotube (MCNT) and prepared MCNT aqueous suspension and MCNT suspension-coated sand, respectively; afterwards, they were introduced into cement mortar (MNT/CM, MNTSM), respectively. Next, mechanical strengths and piezoresistive properties (DC resistivities (ρ v), AC impedances (Z r)) under cyclic loadings (σ c) of two types of MNT/CM and MNTSM nanocomposites were investigated to explore the intrinsic and self-sensing behaviors. Results reveal that MCNT can be evenly and well-coated on sand, which favors to achieve its intrinsic self-sensing property. Although the fraction changes in ρ v and Z r under the same σ c of MNTSM are both lower than those of MNT/CM, the stress sensitivity of MNTSM is only −1.16%/MPa (DC resistivity), −1.55%/MPa (AC impedance); its sensing linearity and stability (2.53, 2.45%; 2.73, 2.67%) are superior to those of MNT/CM (4.94, 2.57%; 3.78, 2.96%). Piezoresistivity using AC impedance technique is helpful to acquire balanced sensing sensitivity and stability while applied as intrinsic sensors in infrastructure.

Optical limiting performance of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in castor oil is studied using a low power laser irradiation at 532 nm. Our results suggest that it is possible to tune the optical limiting threshold of the AuNPs by modifying the parameters of the set-up and gold nanoparticle concentration of the colloids. The closed Z-scan measurements reveal that non-local thermal nonlinear refraction process is responsible for the limiting action of the colloids. We have investigated the Z-scan behavior of the samples based on the non-local thermal nonlinear refraction process without using photo-thermal thin lens approximation. It is shown that this model is in good agreement with the experimental results and large enhancement factors are measured for values of nonlinear thermal refractive index and thermo-optical coefficients of the colloids at higher gold nanoparticle concentration compared to the measurement of castor oil.
