To facilitate analysis of nanoscale heat transfer in nanoparticle systems the thermal properties of ligand layers must be understood. To this end, we use an optical pump-probe technique to study the thermal transport across ligands on gold nanorods and into the solvent. We find that varying properties of the ligand can have large impacts on the thermal decay of a nanorod after exposure to a laser pulse. By raising the concentration of free CTAB from 1 mM and 10 mM in solutions, the CTAB layer’s effective thermal interface conductance increases three fold. The transition occurs near the CTAB critical micelle concentration. Similar results are found for other ligand layers.

Abstract Transient dynamic behavior of the excited bacteriorhodopsin (BR), which was isolated from the strain H. salinarum, was studied at excitation wavelength from 585 to 639 nm. With the one-color femtosecond (fs) pump-probe technique, we revealed the primary events in BR's photocycle that took place in an ultrafast time scale. From the analysis of the decay components of the dynamical traces, it was evident that the isomerization of the retinal chromophore in BR and the intermediate J's formation occurred within 500 fs. BR exhibited pH-dependent dynamical behaviors. When the medium pH was between 5 and 9, the BR ultrafast dynamics has no obvious change. In contrast, the dynamical curves were obviously affected when the pH was out of that region.

A precise temporal characterization of the pulses involved in pump-probe experiments is crucial for a proper investigation of the ultrafast dynamics in several physical systems. Indeed, it is required for the assessment of the dynamical properties under examination with sufficient temporal resolution. In the fewfs/attosecond domain, typical reconstruction procedures require time-consuming interative methods, which are also sensitive to the experimental noise and to the distortion of the measurement. We developed an approach, called Simplified Trace Reconstruction In the Perturbative regimE (STRIPE), which allows us for a precise characterization of the infrared (IR) and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses, used in a pump-probe experiment. Our method is not based on a phase retrival algorithm, and for this it is typically much faster than the other ones currently known. Moreover, it allows for easily including in the reconstruction the experimental non-idealities that may affect the measurement, like possible distortion due to the measurement procedure itself.
