This article provides an overview of our work on the synthesis, molecular structure, and bonding of a novel class of 13-vertex closo-metallacarboranes incorporating the h7-carboranyl ligand. This bonding mode can only be observed in the d0/fn transition-metal ions with the proper size.

A Me3Si-protected P7 cage reacts with N-heterocyclic-carbene complexes of coinage metals to yield a mononuclear Cu(i) complex featuring a Cu(η4-P7) core and a trinuclear Au(i) complex with linearly coordinated metal ions attached to the P7 cluster.
