An ideally quadratic potential used in different types of ion mass analyzer such as Paul trap, Kingdon trap and quadratic field reflectron may be space-periodically disturbed due to inaccuracy of fabrication and design features. If ion motion in such devices is computer-simulated, disturbances of potential may be caused by the peculiarity of the computation method. The problem investigated in this work is the effect that weak space-periodic disturbance of a quadratic potential takes on the ion motion in such a potential. The effect of the disturbance we considered is the misphasing of an ion cloud oscillating in a disturbed quadratic potential. A method to evaluate the characteristic misphasing time is presented. For the case of disturbance amplitude being constant along ion trajectories, the designated problem may be considered analytically. If the disturbance amplitude depends on oscillation co-ordinate, the result can be obtained by use of numerical integration. An example of numerical calculation is presented.

Background: Pantoprazole (PTZ) and Levosulpiride (LS) were proven as effective agents for the treatment of Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It is a complex motor disorder that results in regurgitation of the gastric contents into the lower esophagus with consequent symptoms such as heart burn, retrosternal pain, dysphagia and belching. Methods: A rapid, sensitive, selective and specific liquid chromatography- electro spray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of Pantoprazole (PTZ) and Levosulpiride (LS) in spiked Human Plasma. The method utilized SPE as sample preparation technique and the analysis was carried out on a HPLC system utilizing electro spray ionization as interface and triple quadrupole mass analyzer for quantification in MRM possitive mode. Iloperidone was used as internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation was performed on a Phenomenex C-18 Column (4.6 mm x 50 mm, 5µ) with an isocratic elution mode utilizing a mobile phase composition of Solution containing a mixture of 70 volumes of acetonitrile: 30 volumes of methanol and 10mM ammonium formate (pH 4.0) at the ratio of 80:20 % v/v. The flow rate was maintained at 0.3 mL/min. Results: PTZ, LS and IS were detected and quantified with proton adducts at m/z 383.37→200.00, m/z 341.42→112.15 and 426.48→261.00 respectively. The linearity and range was established by fortifying blank plasma samples in the concentration range of 3.5-2000 ng/mL for PTZ and 3.0-2400 ng/mL for LS. The correlation coefficient (r2) was found to be ≥ 0.993 for PTZ and (r2) ≥ 0.990 for LS. The lower limit of quantification for PTZ was 3.5 ng/mL and LS was 3.0 ng/mL. The intra and inter day precision and accuracy for PTZ and LS were within the limits fulfilling the international acceptance criteria. PTZ and LS were found to be stable throughout three freeze-thaw cycles, bench top and short term stability studies. Conclusion: The proposed validated LC-MS/MS method offers a sensitive quantification of PTZ and LS in spiked human plasma and can be utilized for the quantification of PTZ and LS in real-time samples.

Abstract. Black carbon (BC) is now mainly of anthropogenic origin. It is the dominant light absorbing component of atmospheric aerosols, playing an important role in the earth's radiative balance and therefore relevant to climate change studies. In addition, BC is known to be harmful to human beings making it relevant to policy makers. Nevertheless, the measurement of BC remains biased by the instrument-based definition of BC. The Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), allows the measurement of the refractory BC (rBC) mass of individual particles using laser-induced incandescence. However, the SP2 needs an empirical calibration to retrieve the rBC mass from the incandescence signal and the sensitivity of the SP2 differs between different BC types. Ideally, for atmospheric studies, the SP2 should be calibrated using ambient particles containing a known mass of ambient rBC. However, such "ambient BC" calibration particles cannot easily be obtained and thus commercially available BC particles are commonly used for SP2 calibration instead. In this study we tested the sensitivity of the SP2 to different BC types in order to characterize the potential error introduced by using non-ambient BC for calibration. The sensitivity of the SP2 was determined, using an aerosol particle mass analyzer, for rBC from thermodenuded diesel exhaust, wood burning exhaust and ambient particles as well as for commercially available products: Aquadag® and fullerene soot. Thermodenuded, fresh diesel exhaust has been found to be ideal for SP2 calibration for two reasons. First, the small amount of non-BC matter upon emission reduces the risk of bias due to incomplete removal of non-BC matter and second, it is considered to represent atmospheric rBC in urban locations where diesel exhaust is the main source of BC. The SP2 was found to be up to 16% less sensitive to rBC from thermodenuded ambient particles (≤15 fg) than rBC from diesel exhaust, however, at least part of this difference can be explained by incomplete removal of non-refractory components in the thermodenuder. The amount of remaining non-refractory matter was estimated to be below 30% by mass, according to a comparison of the scattering cross sections of the whole particles with that of the pure BC cores. The SP2 sensitivity to rBC from wood burning exhaust agrees with the SP2 sensitivity to rBC from diesel exhaust within an error of less than 14% (≤40 fg). If, due to experimental restrictions, diesel exhaust cannot be used, untreated fullerene soot was found to give an SP2 calibration curve similar to diesel exhaust and ambient rBC (within ±10% for a rBC mass ≤15 fg) and is therefore recommended although two different batches differed by ~14% between themselves. In addition, the SP2 was found to be up to 40% more sensitive to Aquadag® than to diesel exhaust rBC. Therefore Aquadag® cannot be recommended for atmospheric application without accounting for the sensitivity difference. These findings for fullerene soot and Aquadag® confirm results from previous literature.
