The present paper studies the biodegradability of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) resulting from the waste water of an oil field after carrying out chemically based oil recovery methods. Three aerobic bacteria strains, PM-1, PM-2, PM-3 and PM-4 were isolated from the wastewater. The results indicated that PM-2, PM-3 and PM-4 had better degradability on HPAM. PM-4 showed antagonism to two other strains, whereas PM-2 and PM-3 showed synergetic effects. Primary optimized HPAM degradation conditions of mixed PM-2 and PM-3 were 35 °C ~ 45 °C of degradation temperature and 5.5~7.5 of pH. The mixed PM-2 and PM-3 showed alternative in different media and their different growth stage.

Abstract Colloid titration has been widely used to determine the charge carried by macromolecules and the concentration of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes in paper making and food service industries. This method is simple and the materials used are non-volatile and harmless, but it has not previously been used to determine the partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) in wastewater produced from polymer flooding. In this paper, colloid titration was used to determine the HPAM in wastewater produced from polymer flooding in an oilfield. When the HPAM concentration (Cp) was <200 mg/l, the relationship between the Cp and the titration value (Vp) was linear. This linear relationship was influenced by the pH of wastewater and the hydrolysis degree of HPAM; Vp increased with the pH and the hydrolysis degree. However, it was independent of the concentration of solubilized crude oil and salt concentration in the wastewater and the molecular weight of the HPAM. Recovery tests showed that the determination of HPAM in the wastewater by colloid titration was reliable. It was also found that the colloid titration and starch iodide method had similar accuracies for determination of the HPAM and that colloid titration was a better method for the analyst.

The cross-linked polymer gel systems are being used increasingly to redirect or modify reservoir fluid movement in the vicinity of injection wells for the purpose of permeability/profile modification job in the oil field due to their high temperature stability and capability to provide rigid gel having high mechanical strength. In this study, a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide-hexamine-hydroquinonegel is used for the development of polymer gel system. The experimental investigation demonstrates that the gelation time varies with polymer and crosslinker concentration and the temperature. The mathematical model is developed with the help of gelation kinetics of polymer gel and using Arrhenius equation, which relates the gelation time with polymer, crosslinker concentrations, and temperature. The developed model is solved with the help of multivariate regression method. It is observed in this study that the theoretical values of gelation time have good agreement with the experimental values.
