When asked to gather information for any type of research project, books are the last place many of our students want to look, unless forced to do so because print sources are required as part of the assignment. The research tool of this “post-literate” generation is the computer, and their most frequently used source of information is the internet. In fact, using the internet seems to be the best way to keep my students engaged in any extensive, or ongoing, research project.

AbstractEmerging internet technologies have revolutionized and invaded our private and professional lives in ways that are as yet hard to assess. These developments have also affected the field of translation. Professional translators’ workplaces and routines have changed profoundly and translation markets have been affected by increasing globalization. Furthermore, new forms of translation have emerged on the internet, including amateur translators’ communities which offer their time and efforts for a variety of different goals, not all of them exclusively charitable. Some are also commercial, others just for fun.In this context, the present article demonstrates the ways in which recent developments related to the internet have started to call into question a series of long-established categories. Online phenomena have not only contributed to blurring the lines between the consumption and production of content; it has also become increasingly difficult to distinguish between amateurs and professionals or between work and leisure, and to differentiate between play and labour.Drawing on examples from an ongoing research project on collaborative translation communities, this article illustrates how members of internet communities perceive, describe and construct their own translation activities. The paper then addresses the issue of how the internet paved the way for new forms of exploitation, which are also identifiable in the field of translation. By looking at the intersections between labour, fun and exploitation in internet translation communities, the paper aims to make a critical contribution to the debate on (ethical) questions that arise in relation to new online phenomena.

The internet is a great source of information that has seen exponential growth over the last decade (Figure 1). In 1996 there were 100,000 websites on the internet compared with over 160 million in 2008. The number of people with access to the internet has also increased from 361 million in the year 2000 to nearly 2 billion in 2010. The internet is also used for various purposes other than obtaining information. Nevertheless, a study conducted by Bupa Heath Pulse found that nearly half of patients who search for medical information do so for the purpose of self-diagnosis.

This paper describes a Web-based program that has been written in JavaScript to help honours-level students to design a protocol for their research project. It consists of several screens which contain text-input boxes and options, that students can select to determine what statistical test is appropriate. On each page students can obtain information concerning the particular step in the procedure for defining the research protocol. Some links to useful pages on the Internet are also provided. After the student has navigated the screens, the program writes a protocol outline, depending on the information entered by the student. The program was introduced to fourth-stage students of Nutrition and Dietetics at the beginning of the Research Project module. Students were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire containing attitude statements after they had discussed the protocol with their supervisors. Students generally rated the usefulness of the Internet links highly and considered the program to be user-friendly, clearly laid out and visually appealing. Most students agreed that the program helped to clarify what is needed for the protocol, provoked them to think of aspects of the project, the importance of which they might have failed to realize early enough, and helped them to ask appropriate questions of their supervisors.DOI:10.1080/0968776020100111

Abstract An increasing number of people leave their mark on the Internet by publishing personal notes (e.g., text, photos, videos) on Web-based services such as Facebook and Flickr. This creates a vast source of information that could be utilized in meteorology, for example, as a complement to traditional weather observations. Photo-sharing services offer an increasing amount of useful data, as modern mobile devices can automatically include coordinates and time stamps on photos, and users can easily tag them for content. In this study, different weather-related photos and their metadata were accessed from the photo-sharing service Flickr, and their reliability was assessed. Case studies of hail detection were then performed. The position of hail detected in the atmosphere by radar was compared with positions of Flickr photos depicting hail on the ground. As a result of this preliminary study, the authors think that further exploration of the use of Flickr photographs is warranted, and the consideration of other social media as data sources can be recommended.

In accordance with the technological advances of web-based information delivery via the internet has more value, because the information can be delivered easily, quickly,  spacious and interactive. Because this way, information is simply inserted into the web and within seconds the information can be accessed globally.  Submission of this information has not been used in Ngebruk Islamic Junior High School, Sumberpucung District, Malang Regency. Submission of the information in these schools still use manual way, such as by mail, bulletin boards, or orally. Surely this way less effective and efficient, since it requires a lot of expenses such as the purchase of paper, printing machine and maintenance, ink, and its scope was limited to the scope of the school. To reduce the above problems, the delivery of information in this school need to use web media created with the PHP programming language and MySQL. PHP is a programming language that is used to allow users to process information on the web, while MySQL is the software used to store the information on the web. Once the web is run online, the school entered information to the web, can be accessed via intenet by anyone without the limited space and time
