The keynote speaker at this year’s ARLIS/UK & Ireland conference in Manchester struck a sobering note and used language and concepts depressingly familiar to those of us working in higher education (HE). Jan Wilkinson, the University Librarian at the University of Manchester and director of the world-famous John Rylands Library, made two confessions to conference delegates. The first was that the majority of subjects at her university no longer had specialist librarians and the second was that she did not feel a great attachment to the profession. From a marketing background, Jan was perfectly attuned to the idea of HE as a business. Whilst she made valid points about the need for librarians to be more strategic in their approach and for university libraries to be seen as an essential component of the competitive edge of the university, I am sure I was not alone in feeling depressed at the lack of value attached to specialist knowledge and collections.

The world is facing multiple changes and challenges; the environment shows inequalities, poverty, and corruption. Ecuador is not the exception. The man is declared the primary focus of the Ecuadorian Constitution to meet such changes. The objective of decreasing poverty, improving wealth distribution, and contributing to sustainable human development is unavoidable. In that context, the university has the pivotal role in generating interaction with society and its reality, to train professionals social and humanly responsible towards such facts, to promote the social management of knowledge from different action fields. The goal of this chapter is to specify the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in a society where they take part, to draw up social responsibility of universities in Guayaquil and the challenges they face, as well as actions that contribute to the eradication of corruption and greater wellbeing of the society.

The article reveals the predominance of university libraries, which took on an educational function and played a significant role in the dissemination of knowledge and the development of society. The author lists the history and sequence of the creation of university libraries in the world and in Uzbekistan, where he also points to the library of the Turkestan People’s University, which became the ancestor of higher education in Middle Asia and Kazakhstan. This chapter discusses that the goal of assessment, as a part of teaching, in higher education should be to prepare the learner for performing in real life as a professional. The learner should become a self-regulator and a self-evaluator. The instructor (faculty, supervisor, or mentor) at the university must understand that assessment is a process of coaching and assisting, not just approving students' achievement. Technology acquired by the universities in the form of learning management systems (LMS) can be used to provide feedback and assistance to a large number of students. The role of feedback is discussed as an essential component of assessment that would help students to reflect and learn. Rubrics must be used as a tool to provide feedback to students instead of just grading assignments.

Аннотация: В статье автор акцентирует внимание на возрастающую роль университетов в развитии интеграционных процессов в мировом образовании. Автор подчеркивает мысль о том, что международное сотрудничество в деятельности любого университета приобретает сегодня, в век глобализации, все большую значимость. Это обусловлено мировыми процессами глобализации, которые охватывают такие важные сферы жизни общества, как наука, образование и культура. На примере Бишкекского государственного университета им. К.Карасаева БГУ показан опыт успешного сотрудничества с ведущими университетами мира, а также роль и вклад БГУ в развитие и расширение интеграционных процессов в сфере образования и науки нашей республики. Сегодня Бишкекский государственный университет - современное многопрофильное, имеющее богатый опыт в международном сотрудничестве, высшее учебное заведение. Университету удалось добиться заметных успехов в области образования и науки, благодаря которым он занимает сейчас высокие места в рейтингах среди ведущих университетов Кыргызской Республики. This is due to the global processes of globalization, which cover such important areas of society as science, education and culture. On the example of Bishkek State University named after K. Karasaev shows the experience of successful cooperation with leading universities of the world, as well as the role and contribution of BSU in the development and expansion of integration processes in the field of education and science of our Republic. Today Bishkek State University is a modern multi-disciplinary higher education institution with a rich experience in international cooperation. The University has achieved significant success in the field of education and science, thanks to which it now occupies high places in the rankings among the leading universities of the Kyrgyz Republic. <span>Scholarship and learning are truly global endeavors, and rightly so given the challenges of the twenty-first century. Higher education is increasingly at the forefront of these endeavors, pursuing international initiatives in support of teaching, research, and learning. Academic libraries throughout the world embrace this imperative for international understanding in today’s turbulent environment. The University of Tennessee Libraries acted on the imperative through a very personal and direct collaboration with the Makerere University Libraries in Kampala, Uganda. This article describes how two different universities, seemingly worlds apart, forged an enduring, exceptional, and mutually beneficial partnership through a focus on information technology.</span>

Being a country with the fourth largest population in the world, but with an entrepreneur rate that only rank six at the ASEAN level, is a challenge for Indonesia. Entrepreneurship education plays an important role to increase entrepreneurial graduates of higher education. Global awareness of the importance of the role of entrepreneurship and innovation, in line with the growing awareness of higher education institutions, especially universities, to walk the entrepreneurial path. This study aims to form an entrepreneurial university model using a systems approach, where the university should not carry its own burden in carrying out the responsibilities of a third mission to help accelerate community development. The model produced using the Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) method describes the sub-elements as the driver factor that influence the transformation process towards an entrepreneurial university. The elements of the entrepreneurial university model are come from the elements in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. One of the results showed that in Indonesia, producing entrepreneurial graduates as entrepreneurs is a very important factor and will encourage other factors, such as product commercialization, patents, and realizing science and techno parks, as has been achieved by several leading universities in the world.   Received: 2 November 2020 / Accepted: 11 December 2020 / Published: 17 January 2021

As sustainability gains significance within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) worldwide, the University of British Columbia (UBC) stands as one of the global champions of sustainability. In 2019, Times Higher Education ranked UBC as number one in the world for taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts and ranked one in Canada for making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Over the years, UBC students have been instrumental to sustainability on the UBC campus by advocating for divestment, climate justice, and other sustainability commitments and projects in the university. Hence, this qualitative study examines students&rsquo; engagement with or their perception of the university&rsquo;s sustainability programs and image. The study found that students acknowledged and commended the university&rsquo;s sustainability efforts in teaching, research, providing sustainability-related opportunities for students, and in sustainability operations. However, students also addressed hesitation on the part of university administration in championing climate justice and bolder climate action. The conclusion is that continued support and engagement with students are critical for UBC to achieve its climate action plans and sustainability goals in general. The study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the influential role of young people and the youth climate movement in catalyzing ambitious global climate action at all levels.

Information and communications technologies (ICTs) and the Internet have to a large extent influenced the way information is made available, published and accessed. More information is being produced too frequently and information users now require certain skills to sift through this multitude in order to identify what is appropriate for their purposes. Computer and information skills have become a necessity for all academic programmes. As libraries subscribe to databases and other peer-reviewed content (print and electronic), it is important that users are also made aware of such sources and their importance. The purpose of this study was to examine the teaching of information literacy (IL) in universities in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and the role played by librarians in creating information literate graduates. This was done by examining whether such IL programmes were prioritised, their content and how frequently they were reviewed. An electronic questionnaire was distributed to 12 university libraries in Zimbabwe and 21 in South Africa. A total of 25 questionnaires were returned. The findings revealed that IL was being taught in universities library and non-library staff, was compulsory and contributed to the term mark in some institutions. The study also revealed that 44 per cent of the total respondents indicated that the libraries were collaborating with departments and faculty in implementing IL programmes in universities. The study recommends that IL should be an integral part of the university programmes in order to promote the use of databases and to guide students on ethical issues of information use.

The purpose of looking at Indian universities in a comparative perspective is obviously to locate it among higher education institutions across the world and to identify its strengths and weaknesses in the advancement of learning and research. In doing so, one can discern the directions for reform in order to put the university system in a competitive advantage for an emerging knowledge society. This chapter looks at the current state of universities in India and highlights the initiatives under way for change and proposes required policy changes.
