SynopsisAs empirical relationships between acidic deposition and its effects on soils and surface waters have become increasingly understood, the focus of attention has shifted to the reversal of acidification in response to decreased amounts of acidic deposition.Recent decreases in acidic deposition, in both North America and parts of Europe, have initiated the reversal of acidification and the recovery of impacted ecosystems. Reversal has also been investigated in large-scale experiments with whole ecosystems. Predictive models can account for much of this empirical and experimental data, at least at the catchment scale, over periods of years.Discrepancies between observed and predicted effects are attributable in part to the increasingly important role of nitrogen in soil and water acidification. ‘Nitrogen saturation’ threatens to offset the incipient recovery following decreases in SO2 emissions. Future climate change might further exacerbate the problem by increasing the rate of mineralisation of soil organic matter and releasing stored nitrogen.

At Risdalsheia (southern Norway), an ongoing catchment-scale acid-exclusion experiment has been conducted since 1984 as part of the RAIN project (Reversing Acidification In Norway). Acid precipitation is collected on a 1200-m2 transparent roof, treated by ion exchange, sea salts readded, and reapplied as clean rain beneath the roof Up to 1990 annual surveys of soil chemistry have revealed no significant trends. The chemical composition of runoff has changed: sulfate decreased from about 111 μeq/L in 1984 to 38 μeq/L in 1992 and nitrate from about 33 to 5 μeq/L. Base cations decreased and alkalinity increased over the 8-yr period from −88 to −29 μeq/L to compensate for this change in strong acid anions. Much of the alkalinity change is due to the increased role of organic anions. The results fit an empirical nomograph relating alkalinity, base cations, and strong acid anions and a new empirical nomograph relating alkalinity, H+, and total organic carbon. The acid-exclusion experiment provides the first catchment-scale evidence for the reversibility of nitrogen saturation; RAIN results corroborate field observations of changes in surface water chemistry in response to reduced acid deposition as well as process-oriented, conceptual acidification models.

Abstract. Dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) assemblages have been widely used over the Arctic Ocean to reconstruct sea-surface parameters on a quantitative basis. Such reconstructions provide insights into the role of anthropogenic vs natural forcings in the actual climatic trend. Here, we present the palynological analysis of a 36 cm-long core collected from the Mackenzie Through in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Dinocyst assemblages were used to quantitatively reconstruct the evolution of sea surface conditions (temperature, salinity, sea ice) and freshwater palynomorphs influxes were used as local paleo-river discharge indicators over the last ~150 yr. Dinocyst assemblages are dominated by autotrophic taxa (68 to 96 %). Pentapharsodinium dalei is the dominant specie throughout most of the core, except at the top where the assemblages are dominated by Operculodinium centrocarpum. Quantitative reconstructions of sea surface parameters display a serie of relatively warm, lower sea ice and saline episodes in surface waters, alternately with relatively cool and low salinity episodes. The warm episodes are characterized with high dinocyst productivity. Variations of dinocyst influxes and reconstructed sea surface conditions are closely linked to large scale atmospheric circulation patterns such as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and to a lesser degree, the Arctic Oscillation (AO). Positive phases of the PDO correspond to increases of dinocyst influxes, warmer and saltier surface waters, which we associate with upwelling events of warm and relatively saline water from Pacific origin. Freshwater palynomorph influxes increased in three phases from AD 1857 until reaching maximum values in AD 1991, suggesting that the Mackenzie River discharge followed the same trend when its discharge peaked between AD 1989 and AD 1992. The PDO mode seems to dominate the climatic variations at multi-annual to decadal timescales in the Western Canadian Arctic and Beaufort Sea areas.

Abstract. Historical in situ sub-daily rainfall observations are essential for the understanding of short-duration rainfall extremes but records are typically not readily accessible and data are often subject to errors and inhomogeneities. Furthermore, these events are poorly quantified in projections of future climate change making adaptation to the risk of flash flooding problematic. Consequently, knowledge of the processes contributing to intense, short-duration rainfall is less complete compared with those on daily timescales. The INTENSE project is addressing this global challenge by undertaking a data collection initiative that is coupled with advances in high-resolution climate modelling to better understand key processes and likely future change. The project has so far acquired data from over 23 000 rain gauges for its global sub-daily rainfall dataset (GSDR) and has provided evidence of an intensification of hourly extremes over the US. Studies of these observations, combined with model simulations, will continue to advance our understanding of the role of local-scale thermodynamics and large-scale atmospheric circulation in the generation of these events and how these might change in the future.

Cerium oxide in borate glasses of composition xCeO2·(50 − x)PbO·50B2O3 plays an important role in changing both microstructure and magnetic behaviors of the system. The structural role of CeO2 as an effective agent for cluster and crystal formation in borate network is clearly evidenced by XRD technique. Both structure and size of well-formed cerium separated clusters have an effective influence on the structural properties. The cluster aggregations are documented to be found in different range ordered structures, intermediate and long range orders are the most structures in which cerium phases are involved. The nano-sized crystallized cerium species in lead borate phase are evidenced to have magnetic behavior.  The criteria of building new specific borate phase enriched with cerium as ferrimagnetism has been found to keep the magnetization in large scale even at extremely high temperature. Treating the glass thermally or exposing it to an effective dose of ionized radiation is evidenced to have an essential change in magnetic properties. Thermal heat treatment for some of investigated materials is observed to play dual roles in the glass matrix. It can not only enhance alignment processes of the magnetic moment but also increases the capacity of the crystallite species in the magnetic phases. On the other hand, reverse processes are remarked under the effect of irradiation. The magnetization was found to be lowered, since several types of the trap centers which are regarded as defective states can be produced by effect of ionized radiation.

AbstractThe article presents the results of the review of the empirical literature regarding the impact of quantitative easing (QE) on emerging markets (EMs). The subject is of interest to policymakers and researchers due to the increasingly larger role of EMs in the world economy and the large-scale capital flows occurring after 2009. The review is conducted in a systematic manner and takes into consideration different methodological choices, samples and measurement issues. The paper puts the summarized results in the context of transmission channels identified in the literature. There are few distinct methodological approaches present in the literature. While there is a consensus regarding the direction of the impact of QE on EMs, its size and durability have not yet been assessed with sufficient precision. In addition, there are clear gaps in the empirical findings, not least related to relative underrepresentation of the CEE region (in particular, Poland).

<p>Epigenetic targets are a significant focus for drug discovery research, as demonstrated by the eight approved epigenetic drugs for treatment of cancer and the increasing availability of chemogenomic data related to epigenetics. This data represents a large amount of structure-activity relationships that has not been exploited thus far for the development of predictive models to support medicinal chemistry efforts. Herein, we report the first large-scale study of 26318 compounds with a quantitative measure of biological activity for 55 protein targets with epigenetic activity. Through a systematic comparison of machine learning models trained on molecular fingerprints of different design, we built predictive models with high accuracy for the epigenetic target profiling of small molecules. The models were thoroughly validated showing mean precisions up to 0.952 for the epigenetic target prediction task. Our results indicate that the herein reported models have considerable potential to identify small molecules with epigenetic activity. Therefore, our results were implemented as freely accessible and easy-to-use web application.</p>

Getting old is generally seen as unappealing, yet aging confers considerable advantages in several psychological domains (North &amp; Fiske, 2015). In particular, older adults are better off emotionally than younger adults, with aging associated with the so-called “age advantages,” that is, more positive and less negative emotional experiences (Carstensen et al., 2011). Although the age advantages are well established, it is less clear whether they occur under conditions of prolonged stress. In a recent study, Carstensen et al (2020) demonstrated that the age advantages persist during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting that older adults are able to utilise cognitive and behavioural strategies to ameliorate even sustained stress. Here, we build on Carstensen and colleagues’ work with two studies. In Study 1, we provide a large-scale test of the robustness of Carstensen and colleagues’ finding that older individuals experience more positive and less negative emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic. We measured positive and negative emotions along with age information in 23,629 participants in 63 countries in April-May 2020. In Study 2, we provide a comparison of the age advantages using representative samples collected before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. We demonstrate that older people experience less negative emotion than younger people during the prolonged stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the advantage of older adults was diminished during the pandemic, pointing to a likely role of older adults use of situation selection strategies (Charles, 2010).
