New attempts arc presented to determine the age of large Pleistocene mammals excavated at Starunia, ∼130 km southeast of Lviv, Ukraine. This remarkable discovery made at the beginning of the 20th century included a complete carcass of woolly rhinoceros (No. 2), fragments of 3 woolly rhinoceroses (Nos. 1, 3, and 4) and remnants of numerous specimens of other fossil fauna and flora. Although attempts to date paleontological findings from Starunia site go back to the early 1970s, the results obtained before 2006 arc somewhat misleading, mostly due to unresolved contamination problems. Comprehensive cleaning of the samples adopted in the framework of this study was aimed at removal of 2 potential sources of contamination: (i) radiocarbon-free hydrocarbons abundant at the burial site; and (ii) allochthonous organic materials containing contemporary carbon that were used in the past during preservation of the dated specimens. Two types of samples have been analyzed for their14C content in the framework of the present study: (i) fragments of bones and teeth collected from specimens stored or exposed in the Natural History museums in Lviv and Kraków; and (ii) samples of terrestrial macrofossils retrieved from sediment cores obtained during the 2007–2008 field campaigns in the Starunia area.14C analyses of collagen were supplemented by measurements of its elemental C/N ratio and13C/12C and15N/14N isotope ratios. Three14C dates obtained for rhinoceros No. 2 span the age range from 35.3 to 40.0 ka BP, in agreement with the minimum age estimated from macrofossils. The mean value of 37.7 ± 1.7 ka BP falls in the range of ages reported for big Pleistocene mammals from other locations in Europe. The bones of rhinoceros No. 3, which were found in close vicinity to those of rhinoceros No. 2, reveal a14C age of 36.7 ± 0.6 ka BP. The δ15N and δ13C values obtained for collagen extracted from bones and teeth belonging to rhinoceroses Nos. 1, 2, and 3 are in a broad agreement with analogous literature data for large Pleistocene mammals found in other sites in Europe, North America, and Siberia.

Background: De Quervain's tenosynovitis is a painful and swollen stenosing tenosynovitis of the first dorsal compartment of the wrist. After analysing the patient's medical history and doing a physical examination, a diagnosis is made. Finkelstein's test is almost always positive. Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of local corticosteroid injections in the treatment of de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Material & Methods: The study enrolled fifty patients with De Querven's Tenosynovitis. NSAIDs were provided orally and topically to all patients for an average of six weeks with no obvious improvement. Using a visual analogue scale, it was determined how much soreness would be felt in the first dorsal compartment and how much pain would be felt during the Finkelstein test. The edoema was removed by injecting a mixture of 1 mL (10 mg) triamcinolone-acetonide and 1 mL of 1% lidocain hydrochloride into the affected wrist's first dorsal compartment. They were subsequently examined every two weeks for twenty-four weeks. After a local triamcinolone acetonide injection, pain and discomfort on the radial side of the wrist were alleviated, and a negative Finkelstein test was done. Results: The mean age among the patients was 36.6 years with 12.4 SD. The maximum age was 60 years and the minimum age was 25 years old. The duration of symptoms in 4-8 weeks was observed, the mean value was 6 weeks with 1.4 as SD the minimum duration recorded was 4 weeks with 8 weeks as maximum duration. At the start of the week of appearance of symptoms the pain score was 6.44 with 1.6 as SD. The minimum pain score was 4 and maximum pain score was 8. Pain score at 4 weeks was 0.66 with 1.6 as SD. As per the independent t-test the p value was less than 0.05 so the test was significant statistically. Conclusion: One or two local steroid injections in the first dorsal compartment can give considerable pain and inflammation alleviation in people with de Quervain's tenosynovitis.

Background: Several osteotomies have been described for the correction of acetabular dysplasia associated with variable outcomes. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effect of Dega transiliac osteotomy in radiological correction of acetabular dysplasia by assessing the change in various radiological parameters from preoperative period to postoperative period and at a follow up of two years. Methods: This was a prospective observational study conducted on 35 patients of either sex, in the age range of 18 months to 8 years, presenting to the paediatric orthopaedic OPD, of Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon, Haryana, India between January 2012 and September 2014 in whom a diagnosis of acetabular dysplasia was made. All the patients underwent Dega transiliac osteotomy and the effectiveness of this osteotomy in the correction of acetabular dysplasia was assessed by measuring various radiological parameters preoperatively, postoperatively, and at a follow up of two years. The various radiological parameters included acetabular index (AI), centre edge angle of wiberg (CEAW), reimer’s extrusion index (REI) and the shenton’s line (SL).Results: In present study sample of 35 cases, 29 had DDH, 4 were secondary to cerebral palsy and 2 had developed dysplasia following septic arthritis of the hip. The sex distribution showed 19 females and 16 male patients. All the patients underwent Dega transiliac osteotomy at a mean age of 42.94±21.68 months. The mean value of AI improved from 42.43±4.77 degrees in preoperative period to 19.86±2.45 degrees at follow up. The mean value of CEAW improved from - 32.49±21.60 degrees in preoperative period to 32.06±5.48 degrees at follow up. The mean value of REI, improved from 91.06±21.43 % in preoperative period to 0.29±1.18 % at follow up. The SL was broken in all the 35 patients preoperatively, while at follow up it was continuous in all the patients. These changes in all the four parameters were statistically highly significant (p value<0.001).Conclusions: Thus results of present study demonstrate that Dega osteotomy is a safe, effective and versatile surgical procedure for the treatment of acetabular dysplasia secondary to DDH and other disorders. Since the majority of the patients included in this study had the diagnosis of DDH, the results of this study are more representative of dysplasia associated with DDH.

Introduction: Cephalometric analysis aims to determine skeletal and dental relationships. The ANB angle, initially suggested by Rediel and applied by Steiner. is the most used angle in establishing the anteroposterior relationship of the mandible to the maxilla. However, limitations to the accuracy of the ANB angle for this purpose have been reported. To avoid these potential sources of inaccuracy a diagnostic tool was introduced by Jenkins and later modified by Jacobson and became known as the “Wits appraisal”. Aims: The aim of this study was to establish the Wits appraisal value in a sample of Qatari males, a group which had not previously been studied in this context, and to compare the findings with those from racially and ethnically differing groups as reported in the literature. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 28 lateral cephalometric radiographs of Qatari males with an age range of 15 to 32 years, presenting with a well-balanced facial appearance and an acceptable profile. Results: The mean value of the Wits appraisal for Qatari males in the present study was 0.50 ± 2.96. This differed at a statistically significant level from the mean value in the Jacobson study with no gender significant difference noted. On the other hand, significant differences were found when compared with previous reports on different races. Conclusion: The Wits appraisal value for the Qatari male population studied was 0.5±2.96, a result which is significantly higher than that reported in Jacobson’s study. This study revealed that the Wits appraisal is not ethnicity or gender-specific, and therefore cannot be used to differentiate between different ethnic groups. However, it can find application as an alternative to the ANB angle in the treatment of borderline cases. The application of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) will enhance the diagnosis and treatment of cases by yielding three-dimensional views.

The aim was to evaluate the quantity of fluoridated toothpaste placed on toothbrushes by children or their parents/caregivers, at the time of daily tooth brushing, and to analyze whether this quantity is within the standards recommended by national and international institutions on this question. Methods: In total 50 children in the age-range from 3 to 12 years were analyzed. These children and their parents/caregivers/ were asked to bring the toothbrushes and toothpastes they used daily (when they came for the dental consultation). Firstly, we measured the mass of the patient’s toothbrush, without toothpaste. The next measurement was made, based on who performed the daily brushing (children/parents/caregivers), and this individual was asked to put the amount of toothpaste habitually used on the brush, during the daily brushing performed at home. Lastly, the amount of fluoridated toothpaste dispensed was measured, according to the values recommended by national and international agencies, in relation to the child’s age (“a grain of raw rice”, “the size of a pea”, horizontal scrub technique). The values obtained at all the stages were recorded and were compared by the T test (α = 5%). Results: The quantity of toothpaste put on the brush by the child or parent/caregiver ranged from 0.1g to 1.45 g, with the mean value being 0.55g (s.d 0.33). The persons responsible for the children used significantly smaller quantities when compared with the children (p˂0.05). Conclusions: Children, irrespective of age, tended to put more toothpaste on toothbrushes, when compared with the parents/caregivers.

The purpose of the current study is to examine the effect of parental involvement on self esteem of Indian youth players and extending the researches that found strong relation between these two construct . The study was conducted on 100 subjects (N=100; 50 males and 50 females ) with an age range of 14 to 18years. Parental involvement scale by Vijaya Laxmi Chauhan and Gunjan Ganotra Arora(2009) and self esteem scale by R.N Singh and Ankita Shrivastava (2004) were administered to collect the data. Comparison of means, t –test and correlation were used for data analysis. Results revealed that there was a significant gender difference on parental involvement. The female players reported higher mean value than males on parental involvement scale whereas the mean score on self esteem scale showed non significant gender difference. The correlation Analysis revealed that parental involvement and self esteem both functioned independently. Thus, findings indicated that parental involvement was more in case of female players than male players but no significant relation was found with self esteem in both genders.

Introduction: The goal of cephalometric analysis is to determine the skeletal and dental relationships that exist in an individual patient. The objectives of the present study were to establish the Wits appraisal for Qatari females and to compare the results with previous reported results in different racial groups. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 34 lateral cephalometric radiographs of Qatari female patients with age range from18 to 25 years old presented with well-balanced face and acceptable profile.  Results: The mean value of the Wits appraisal for Qatari females in the present study was -0.62 ± 3.8. The Wits appraisal mean value of the present study revealed that no statistically significant difference between the Qatari females and the original data of Jacobson.  On the other hand, significant differences were found when compared to other populations from several reports. Conclusion: The Wits appraisal among Qatari females was -0.62 with standard deviation of 3.8. Care should be taken in growing and developing children where variation in dental height exists and may confuse the Wits value. The Wits appraisal could be used as a moderator to ANB angle in boarder line cases. It is recommended to incorporate angular measurements using 3D imaging software which increases diagnostic accuracy for the least amount of existed discrepancy.

Pd-Ce alloys exhibit various anomalies in physical properties due to mixed valences of Ce, and the anomalies are thought to be strongly related with the crystal structures. Since Pd and Ce are both heavy elements, relative magnitudes of (fcc-fpd) are so small compared with <f> that superlattice reflections, even if any, sometimes cannot be detected in conventional x-ray powder patterns, where fee and fpd are atomic scattering factors of Ce and Pd, and <f> the mean value in the crystal. However, superlattices in Pd-Ce alloys can be analyzed by electron microscopy, thanks to the high detectability of electron diffraction. In this work, we investigated modulated superstructures in alloys with 12.5 and 15.0 at.%Ce.Ingots of Pd-Ce alloys were prepared in an arc furnace under atmosphere of ultra high purity argon. The disc specimens cut out from the ingots were heat-treated in vacuum and electrothinned to electron transparency by a jet method.

The relative partition coefficients of krypton and xenon, and the regional blood flow in 27 superficial malignant tumour nodules in 22 patients with diagnosed tumours were measured using the 85mKr- and 133Xe-clearance method. In order to minimize the effect of biological variables on the measurements the radionuclides were injected simultaneously into the tumour. The distribution of the radiotracers was assumed to be in equilibrium at the beginning of the experiment. The blood perfusion was calculated by fitting a two-exponential function to the measuring points. The mean value of the perfusion rate calculated from the xenon results was 13 ± 10 ml/(100 g-min) [range 3 to 38 ml/(100 g-min)] and from the krypton results 19 ± 11 ml/(100 g-min) [range 5 to 45 ml/(100 g-min)]. These values were obtained, if the partition coefficients are equal to one. The equations obtained by using compartmental analysis were used for the calculation of the relative partition coefficient of krypton and xenon. The partition coefficient of krypton was found to be slightly smaller than that of xenon, which may be due to its smaller molecular weight.
