AbstractWe consider the Cauchy problem $$\left\{ {\matrix{ {u_t = \Delta u + u^p,\quad } \hfill & {x\in {\bf R}^N,\;t \leq 0,} \hfill \cr {u(x,0) = u_0(x),\quad } \hfill & {x\in {\bf R}^N,} \hfill \cr } } \right.$$where N > 2, p > 1, and u0 is a bounded continuous non-negative function in RN. We study the case where u0(x) decays at the rate |x|−2/(p−1) as |x| → ∞, and investigate the convergence property of the global solutions to the forward self-similar solutions. We first give the precise description of the relationship between the spatial decay of initial data and the large time behaviour of solutions, and then we show the existence of solutions with a time decay rate slower than the one of self-similar solutions. We also show the existence of solutions that behave in a complicated manner.

The Cauchy problem for semi-linear heat equations with singular initial data is studied, where N > 2, p > (N + 2)/N, and l > 0 is a parameter. We establish the existence and multiplicity of positive self-similar solutions for the problem by applying the ordinary differential equation shooting method to the corresponding spatial profile problem.

We first prove existence and uniqueness of non-negative solutions of the equationin in the range 1 < p < 1 + 2/N, when initial data u(x, 0) = a|x|−2(p−1), x ≠ 0, for a > 0. It is proved that the maximal and minimal solutions are self-similar with the formwhere g = ga satisfiesAfter uniqueness is proved, the asymptotic behaviour of solutions ofis studied. In particular, we show thatThe case for a = 0 is also considered and a sharp decay rate of the above equation is derived. In the final, we reveal existence of solutions of the first and third equations above, which change sign.

We study the existence and the asymptotic behavior of global solutions of the damped wave equation [Formula: see text] where a ∈ ℝ, α >1, t > 0, x ∈ ℝn, n = 1,2,3, with initial condition (u (0), ut (0)) = (φ,ψ). For α > 2 and α > 1+2 / n, we prove the existence of mild global solutions for small initial data with low regularity and which are not in L1(ℝn). Under the additional hypothesis, (2 < α < 5, when n = 3), we prove that some of these solutions are asymptotic to the self-similar solutions of the associated semi-linear heat equation [Formula: see text] with homogeneous slowly decreasing initial data behaving like c|x|-2 / (α-1) as |x|→ ∞.

We discuss the fourth-order thin film equation with a stable second-order diffusion term, in the context of a standard free-boundary problem with zero height, zero contact angle and zero-flux conditions imposed at an interface. For the first critical exponent where N ≥ 1 is the space dimension, there are continuous sets (branches) of source-type very singular self-similar solutions of the form For p ≠ p0, the set of very singular self-similar solutions is shown to be finite and consists of a countable family of branches (in the parameter p) of similarity profiles that originate at a sequence of critical exponents {pl, l ≥ 0}. At p = pl, these branches appear via a non-linear bifurcation mechanism from a countable set of second kind similarity solutions of the pure thin film equation Such solutions are detected by a combination of linear and non-linear ‘Hermitian spectral theory’, which allows the application of an analytical n-branching approach. In order to connect with the Cauchy problem in Part I, we identify the cauchy problem solutions as suitable ‘limits’ of the free-boundary problem solutions.

Abstract This paper is concerned with the positivity of solutions to the Cauchy problem for linear and nonlinear parabolic equations with the biharmonic operator as fourth order elliptic principal part. Generally, Cauchy problems for parabolic equations of fourth order have no positivity preserving property due to the change of sign of the fundamental solution. One has eventual local positivity for positive initial data, but on short time scales, one will in general have also regions of negativity. The first goal of this paper is to find sufficient conditions on initial data which ensure the existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the linear biharmonic heat equation which are positive for all times and in the whole space. The second goal is to apply these results to show existence of globally positive solutions to the Cauchy problem for a semilinear biharmonic parabolic equation.

SynopsisWe study the blow-up of positive solutions of the Cauchy problem for the semilinear parabolic equationwhere u is a scalar function of the spatial variable x ∈ ℝN and time t > 0, a ∈ ℝV, a ≠ 0, 1 < p and 1 ≦ q. We show that: (a) if p > 1 and 1 ≦ q ≦ p, there always exist solutions which blow up in finite time; (b) if 1 < q ≦ p ≦ min {1 + 2/N, 1 + 2q/(N + 1)} or if q = 1 and 1 < p ≦ l + 2/N, then all positive solutions blow up in finite time; (c) if q > 1 and p > min {1 + 2/N, 1 + 2q/N + 1)}, then global solutions exist; (d) if q = 1 and p > 1 + 2/N, then global solutions exist.
