AbstractObjectiveIn stating the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations aims to halve malnutrition around the world by 2015. Nutritional status of the elderly population in low-income countries is seldom focused upon. The present study aimed to evaluate the magnitude of malnutrition among an elderly population in rural Bangladesh.Design and settingData collection for a multidimensional cross-sectional study of community-based elderly people aged 60 years and over was conducted in a rural area in Bangladesh.SubjectsOf 850 randomly selected elderly individuals, 625 participated in home interviews. Complete nutritional information was available for 457 individuals (mean age 69 ± 8 years, 55% female). Nutritional status was assessed using an adapted form of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) including body mass index (BMI). Age, sex, education, household expenditure on food and self-reported health problems were investigated as potential predictors of nutritional status.ResultsBMI < 18.5 kg m− 2, indicating chronic energy deficiency, was found in 50% of the population. MNA revealed a prevalence of 26% for protein–energy malnutrition and 62% for risk of malnutrition. Health problems rather than age had a negative impact on nutritional status. Level of education and food expenditure were directly associated with nutritional status.ConclusionIn order to reduce world hunger by half in the coming decade, it is important to recognise that a substantial proportion of the elderly population, particularly in low-income countries, is undernourished.

Background: An adequate caloric intake is a major determinant for the health status especially when degenerative conditions become a predominant risk for difficult-to-treat diseases as in aging. Methods: A structured search of literature on the major databases was performed using terms as nutrition, elderly and malnutrition. Results: According to most referenced articles, it appears to be unquestionable that both organic and social risk factors [economic hardship, loneliness, institutionalization] are important as determining causes of protein-caloric malnutrition. Some anthropometric, clinical and laboratory parameters can help to make diagnosis and quantify malnutrition. However, most of them are not cheap or are not simple to perform especially in the setting of General Practice. The application of a simple questionnaire [Mini Nutritional Assessment, MNA] allows to obtain in a fast, easy and non-invasive way a valid assessment of the nutritional status in geriatric patients. The maintenance of the nutritional status is the best measure to counteract the risk of proteincaloric malnutrition and its complications which often sneakily affects elderly population and in particular frail patients. Conclusion: This review, based on updated concepts, examines all the above mentioned points together with some aspects associated with malnutrition as an indicator of disease severity and health costs in the elderly population. Finally, the impact of nutritional intervention and nutrients supplementation on general indices of malnutrition are discussed as a promising strategy.

Background: The population of elderly people aged ≥60 years is increasing worldwide and is projected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050. In India, the elderly people constitute 8.1% of the total population. Malnutrition is highly prevalent in the elderly population due to various diseases and impairments.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out amongst 209 elderly people from February 2018 to April 2018. A questionnaire was used to collect data related to socio-demographic characteristics, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and regarding medication use, comorbidity, use of a walking aid, smoking and alcohol consumption. The MNA tool was used for the assessment of nutrition status. For an assessment of functional status, the activities of daily living scale and instrumental activities of daily living scale were used. Descriptive analysis and Chi-square test were used to present the data.Results: The average MNA score was 23.5 (SD=4.3, range: 7-30) and that of BMI was 23.8 (SD=3.9, range: 15.6-38.9). Of 209 study participants, 9.1% were malnourished, 32.5% were at risk of malnutrition and remaining 58.4% were having normal nutritional status. The possible predictors of malnutrition were older age, lower education level, staying single, unemployed, low income and less than three meals daily.Conclusions: The overall prevalence of malnutrition was found to be 9.1% but the proportion of elderly people at risk of malnutrition was relatively high. Diagnosis and treatment of elderly people at high risk for malnutrition based on the findings of this study may improve functional status and prognosis of elderly people.

Introducción: El conocimiento relacionado con los adultos mayores, referente a los hábitos de alimentación, características antropométricas y su estado de salud, es de vital interés para entes gubernamentales y privados interesados en esta población, a fin de diseñar estrategias que permitan elaborar diagnósticos y planes de acción. Objetivo: Evaluar el estado nutricional de un grupo de adultos mayores del corregimiento de Güintar del Municipio de Anzá, Antioquia-Colombia. Materiales y métodos: Se utilizaron los siguientes análisis: multivariado de la varianza (MANOVA) con contraste canónico de tipo ortogonal, de correspondencia múltiple, descriptivo de tipo unidimensional y de frecuencias de tipo unidimensional;  para lo cual se analizó la información recopilada mediante encuesta, de acuerdo con los factores de discriminación por sexo. Resultados: Se encontró que las mujeres tenían un Índice de Masa Corporal superior al de los hombres; en cuanto al consumo de alimentos se evidenció que el 66,8% de los adultos mayores ingieren las tres comidas al día, el 21,5% incorporan lácteos, legumbres y pescado de manera regular, al 50% les gustan las frutas y 16,7% consumen más de tres vasos de agua al día. Conclusión: Cerca de una tercera parte de los adultos mayores evaluados presentaron riesgo de malnutrición (más mujeres que hombres) y más del 10% se encontraba con malnutrición (más hombres que mujeres), situación que amerita replantear las políticas alimentarias para favorecer un estado nutricional adecuado y por ende la salud de este grupo poblacional.AbstractIntroduction: The knowledge related to elderly people concerning feeding habits, anthropometric characteristics, and their health status, is of vital interest to governmental and private entities interested in this population, in order to design strategies that allow to develop diagnoses and action plans. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status of a group of elderly people in the town of Güintar from the municipality of Anza in Antioquia, Colombia. Materials and methods: The following analysis were used: multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with canonical contrast of orthogonal type, multiple correspondence, descriptive of one-dimensional type and frequencies of one-dimensional type, where the information gathered through a survey was analyzed according to the factors of discrimination by sex. Results: It was found that women had a higher Body Mass Index than men. In terms of food consumption, it could be seen that 66.8% of the elderly people eat three meals per day, 21.5% incorporate dairy products, legumes and fish on a regular basis, 50% like fruits and 16.7% consume more than three glasses of water a day. Conclusion: About one third of the elderly people assessed presented risk of malnutrition (more women than men) and more than 10% were malnourished (more men than women). This situation requires to rethink food policies to promote adequate nutritional status and; therefore, the health of this population group.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to evaluate the nutritional status associated with dysphagia, and compare the calorie and protein intake of dysphagic elderly patients to that of non dysphagic ones, during hospitalization. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study with elderly people ranging from 60 to 80 years old admitted as inpatients in a medical and neurological clinic of a public hospital. They formed two groups, according to the presence of dysphagia: dysphagic and non dysphagic ones. The inclusion criteria were: dysphagia secondary to stroke and exclusive oral feeding. Anthropometric measurements and the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were applied. The 24-hour recall was used to analyze food consumption. The statistical analysis used the Fisher's exact test for the association of variables, and the Mann-Whitney test, for their comparison. Results: a total of 12 elderly people participated, whose mean age was 70.50 ± 7.77 years in the dysphagia group (n = 6), and 72.67 ± 5.01 years in the non dysphagia group (n = 6).There was an association between the presence of dysphagia and the risk of malnutrition, according to MNA (p = 0.028). No significant difference in calorie and protein intake was seen between the groups. The group with dysphagia had a lower water intake as compared to the non dysphagia group (p = 0.045). Conclusion: dysphagia was associated with the risk of malnutrition and lower fluid intake in dysphagic patients, thus, increasing their risk of dehydration.

ABSTRACTIntroduction: To a vast extent the body’s ageing process affects changes in the human nutritional status and body composition. The nutritional status of elderly people is assessed by means of nutritional history, physical examinations, somatometric measurements, biochemical and immunological tests. Moreover, survey tools (questionnaires, scales) are used in order to perform a screening and in-depth analysis of food intake and nutrition in the elderly. Today, an accurate assessment of body composition is conducted by means of specialist devices, such as those used for bioelectrical impedance analysis and dual X-ray absorptiometry.The objective of the thesis was to analyse the usage of selected anthropometric measurements in correspondence with an mini nutritional assessment (MNA) in studies on the identification of undernourishment in seniors, with consideration of some of the initiating factors of nourishment disorders in the population of the elderly.Methods: A review of articles considered essential from the point of view of the study objective was performed by analysing the PubMed database. The search query used was: “mini nutritional assessment MNA elderly”.Results: Nutritional status measured with the MNA may evaluate the way seniors feel. Overweight and obesity usually results in a worse assessment of the quality of the elderly’s life. A disordered nutritional status could stem from a range of medical, psychological and social factors.Conclusions: The results of anthropometric measurements are essential for an optimal identification of the risk of undernourishment in senior citizens by means of an MNA. They also complement information onthe initiating factors of eating disorders in the population of elderly people. In order to be able to widely use anthropometric measurements to complement knowledge on the nutritional status of the elderly, it is indispensable to conduct studies among healthy senior citizens to obtain information that will serve as reference data.

Abstract Background: The number of the elderly population is expected to become the largest demographic group. Malnutrition in older adults is related with complications and premature death. The progression to malnutrition is often insidious and often undetected. No study has been ever conducted or documented to explore the nutritional status of elderly in south Gondar Zone . Hence, this study was aimed to assess the determinants of under nutrition among the elderly people aged ≥65 years. A cross-sectional study was conducted from October 1 to December 15, 2020. A community based study was conducted in south Gondar Zone, Ethiopia. A total of 290 elderly aged greater or equal to 65 years of age selected by systematic random sampling technique were included in the study. Pretested and structured questionnaire adapted from different literature was used to collect data. Anthropometric measurements; weight and height were measured following standard procedures. Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool was used to assess nutritional status of elderly. Descriptive and summary statistics were employed. Multiple logistic regression was fitted to identify determinants of under nutrition. Odds ratios and their 95% confidence intervals were computed to determine the level of significance. Results: Based on their BMI status 27.57%, 95%CI (22.4-32.8) of elderly were underweight and 2.1%, 95% CI (0.7-3.8) were overweight. Likewise, 29.7%, 95%CI (24.5-35.2) of elderly were malnourished and 61.7%, 95% CI (55.5-67.2) were at risk of malnutrition based on Mini-Nutritional Assessment tool. Rural residence (AOR= 10.32, 95%CI (3.62-29.39)), unable to read and write (AOR = 3.54, 95%CI (1.64-7.64)), decline in food intake (AOR= 13.47, 95%CI (6.14-29.52)) and household monthly income <35.6USD (AOR = 4.32, 95%CI (1.97- 9.46)) were significantly and independently associated with under nutrition in elderly population.Conclusion: The prevalence of under nutrition among the elderly in the study area was high, and making it an important public health burden. Place of residence, educational status, food intake and household income were the determinants of under nutrition.

Malnutrition refers to a nutritional ailment that functionally and clinically distresses the body. It is very common in aged people. The nutritional status of this vulnerable group in low-income countries does not remain focused upon. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the magnitude of malnutrition and to correlate different factors amongst aged patients administered in a reputed Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur district, Bangladesh. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional eminence of hospitalized aged patients through the original 18-item full Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) screening tool. We evaluated 238 patients in this study. Of whom, 144 (60.5%) were men and 94 (39.5%) were women, whose average age were 68.7 ± 7 years. MNA revealed a prevalence of 46.2% for risk of malnutrition, 31.9% for malnutrition, and 21.8% for within normal. Aged patients who lived alone were malnourished than the patients living with others (p < 0.001). Laboratory investigation revealed that malnourished individuals had substantively decreased levels of serum albumin (2.5 ± 0.7 g/dl), hemoglobin (10.3 ± 1.7 g/dl), lymphocytes (1.4 ± 0.9×10^9/L), and cholesterol (150 ± 35.9 mg/dl). About forty-nine and 32.9 percent of individuals with malnutrition had a severe or a moderate decrease in food intakes respectively. Different health problems collectively had influenced malnutrition. Malnourished patients had a tendency to hospitalize for a longer period of time. Thus malnutrition in hospitalized aged patients was highly prevalent and was associated with low food intake, the presence of health problems, and prolonged length of hospital stay.

Abstract Objective Nutritional assessment can early identify patients who are malnourished and at risk of malnutrition. To examine the effect of nutritional status on wound healing in elderly burn patients, we used the MNA-SF to measure the nutritional status of elderly patients. This study aimed to examine the role of MNA-SF in elderly burn patients through the correlation analysis of wound-healing indicators and MNA-SF score. Design Prospective observational and cross-sectional study. Methods This study used the MNA-SF to investigate the elderly burn patients at the department of burn. According to the score, the patients fell into three groups: good nutritional status (more than 12 points), malnutrition risk (8~11 points), and malnutrition (0~7 points). At the same time, we measured and compared the wound-healing indicators among the three groups of patients, and detected the correlation. Results The statistical analysis found gender had a slight influence on the score of nutritional status. While age was negatively correlated with the MNA-SF score and nutrition-related indicators. There was a low positive linear correlation between the wound healing percent area change or wound healing rate of patients and the score of the MNA-SF. Conclusion This study finds malnutrition is common among hospitalized elderly burn patients. The application of the MNA-SF in elderly burn patients is efficient and accurate to identify malnutrition early and prevent further obstruction of the normal wound healing, which can provide reference points for early nutrition intervention programs.
