Some strategies for teaching a course based on Gödel, Escher, Bach

In 1979, Douglas Hofstadter published a Pulitzer prizewinning classic, Gödel, Escher, Bach: an eternal golden braid [1], henceforward referred to as GEB. I have presented a course at La Salle University based on GEB eleven times during the last twenty-one years. From these experiences, I present below some useful strategies for instructors who are interested in teaching a course where at least half of GEB is covered in some depth.

Article analyzed the needs of communicative competence and gather information on the features of communicative competence that are believed to be important by selected foreign graduate students studying at DLSU. The features consist of linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic, and intercultural competences. Data were obtained by giving questionnaire to 33 foreign students, consisting of 11 male and 22 females and were analyzed qualitatively. The findings suggest that all features of communicative competence are crucial. In addition, the linguistic competence and strategic competence are considered to be the most essential features of the communicative competence. It can be concluded that the foreign graduate students learn English to achieve their communicative competence and it is used to communicate among students.

Purpose – In introducing e-reserves as an added service of the De La Salle University (DLSU) libraries, the purpose of this paper is to identify the best practices of handling e-reserves and its legal implications as one of the factors that might affect the introduction, development and implementation of such service. Design/methodology/approach – Four universities were considered based from the 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings in Asia. Only one academic library was maintaining an e-reserve system. It was consulted to know more about their e-reserve practices. Findings – The paper recommends to prepare the relevant e-reserve guidelines before it fully operates. Moreover, the Libraries should also collaborate with the office handling learning management systems so as to decide on how to manage the e-reserves. A needs assessment survey for faculty members is also being prepared so as to solicit responses from the teaching faculty if e-reserves is possible for DLSU to be established. Originality/value – The paper attempts to document the existing e-reserve system in Philippine academic libraries.

AbstractThe literary form and rhetorical structure of ancient Chinese poems have not been sufficiently studied. The “Jiu zhang” 九章 (Nine Avowals) attributed to Qu Yuan 屈原 contain distinctive formal features which are highly suggestive for interpretations of Qu Yuan's life and works. At the level of rhetoric, the protagonist frequently describes his own mental state using metaphors of knots and entanglement. At the level of form, the internal structure of the poems, and “Chou si” 抽思 (Unravelled Yearnings) in particular, involves series of overlapping, cross-referencing units that recall the “strange loop” discussed by Douglas Hofstadter as a model of human consciousness. Reading these poems is not just a matter of reconstructing their historical contexts but also of understanding their intended effects on the reader, who is effectively transported into a simulation of Qu Yuan's mind.

Daniel Dennett was educated at Harvard and Oxford, receiving his D.Phil. in 1965. After six years at University of California Irvine, he moved to Tufts, where he is Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences and Director of the Center for Cognitive Studies. It is the author of articles on many issues in artificial intelligence, psychology, and cognitive ethology, as well as in philosophy. His books are Content and Consciousness (1969), Brainstorms (1978), The Mind's I (with Douglas Hofstadter, 1981). Elbow Room (1984), The Intentional Stance (1987), and Consciousness Explained (1991). His new book, Darwin's Dangerous Idea, will be published by Simon & Schuster in spring, 1995.

The quality of instruction depends on a large extent of the capability, the strength, and the excellence of the faculty. For the faculty to perform their roles and fulfill their responsibilities, Colleges must first show that they understand what the faculty needs and values most. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the professional development needs and priorities pertaining to teaching and learning of the college faculty (n=71) of La Salle University to guide the administrators and faculty in crafting enrichment activities. Sixty-three percent of the 113 teachers completed a survey instrument. Calculated means and frequency-percentage distribution describes the prioritization of in-service needs while weighted means determine the performance of the college faculty as appraised by the students. The results of this study showed one-thirds of the teacher-respondents as new to the teaching profession while 69% have more than three years of teaching experience. The study concludes that the colleges vary in their needs for professional development. However, there are areas common to almost all colleges. Their top priority need for classroom management is ending the class on time. For the evaluating students’ learning, the top priority is mastery of the subject matter. For evaluating students’ learning, the priority is constructing questions that cover topic discussed.  Keywords – Management, professional development needs and priorities, teaching profession, teaching experience, enrichment, descriptive design, Philippines
