AbstractWe define a simple criterion for a homogeneous, complete metric structure X that implies that the automorphism group Aut(X) satisfies all the main consequences of the existence of ample generics: it has the automatic continuity property, the small index property, and uncountable cofinality for nonopen subgroups. Then we verify it for the Urysohn space $$, the Lebesgue probability measure algebra MALG, and the Hilbert space $\ell _2 $, thus proving that Iso($$), Aut(MALG), $U\left( {\ell _2 } \right)$, and $O\left( {\ell _2 } \right)$ share these properties. We also formulate a condition for X which implies that every homomorphism of Aut(X) into a separable group K with a left-invariant, complete metric, is trivial, and we verify it for $$, and $\ell _2 $.

We present a general framework for automatic continuity results for groups of isometries of metric spaces. In particular, we prove automatic continuity property for the groups of isometries of the Urysohn space and the Urysohn sphere, i.e. that any homomorphism from either of these groups into a separable group is continuous. This answers a question of Ben Yaacov, Berenstein and Melleray. As a consequence, we get that the group of isometries of the Urysohn space has unique Polish group topology and the group of isometries of the Urysohn sphere has unique separable group topology. Moreover, as an application of our framework we obtain new proofs of the automatic continuity property for the group $\text{Aut}([0,1],\unicode[STIX]{x1D706})$, due to Ben Yaacov, Berenstein and Melleray and for the unitary group of the infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space, due to Tsankov.

In this paper we study the automorphism groups of countable arithmetically saturated models of Peano Arithmetic. The automorphism groups of such structures form a rich class of permutation groups. When studying the automorphism group of a model, one is interested to what extent a model is recoverable from its automorphism group. Kossak-Schmerl [12] show that if M is a countable, arithmetically saturated model of Peano Arithmetic, then Aut(M) codes SSy(M). Using that result they prove:Let M1. M2 be countable arithmetically saturated models of Peano Arithmetic such that Aut(M1) ≅ Aut(M2). Then SSy(M1) = SSy(M2).We show that if M is a countable arithmetically saturated of Peano Arithmetic, then Aut(M) can recognize if some maximal open subgroup is a stabilizer of a nonstandard element, which is smaller than any nonstandard definable element. That fact is used to show the main theorem:Let M1, M2be countable arithmetically saturated models of Peano Arithmetic such that Aut(M1) ≅ Aut(M2). Then for every n < ωHere RT2n is Infinite Ramsey's Theorem stating that every 2-coloring of [ω]n has an infinite homogeneous set. Theorem 0.2 shows that for models of a false arithmetic the converse of Kossak-Schmerl Theorem 0.1 is not true. Using the results of Reverse Mathematics we obtain the following corollary:There exist four countable arithmetically saturated models of Peano Arithmetic such that they have the same standard system but their automorphism groups are pairwise non-isomorphic.

Let A and B be C*-algebras acting on a Hilbert space H, and letwhere A1 is the unit ball in A and d(a, B1) denotes the distance of a from B1. We shall consider the following problem: if ‖A – B‖ is sufficiently small, does it follow that there is a unitary operator u such that uAu* = B?Such questions were first considered by Kadison and Kastler in [9], and have received considerable attention. In particular in the case where A is an approximately finite-dimensional (or hyperfinite) von Neumann algebra, the question has an affirmative answer (cf [3], [8], [12]). We shall show that in the case where A and B are approximately finite-dimensional C*-algebras (AF-algebras) the problem also has a positive answer.

The theory of noncommutative involutive Banach algebras (briefly Banach *-algebras) owes its origin to Gelfand and Naimark, who proved in 1943 the fundamental representation theorem that a Banach *-algebra with C*-condition(C*)is *-isomorphic and isometric to a norm-closed self-adjoint subalgebra of all bounded operators on a suitable Hilbert space. At the same time they conjectured that the C*-condition can be replaced by the B*-condition.(B*)In other words any B*-algebra is actually a C*-algebra. This was shown by Glimm and Kadison [5] in 1960.

Let n≧1 be an integer and suppose that for each i= 1,…,n, we have a Hilbert space Hi and a set of bounded linear operators Ti, Vij:Hi→Hi, j=1,…,n. We define the system of operatorswhere λ=(λ1,…,λn)∈ℂn. Coupled systems of the form (1.1) are called multiparameter systems and the spectral theory of such systems has been studied in many recent papers. Most of the literature on multiparameter theory deals with the case where the operators Ti and Vij are self-adjoint (see [14]). The non self-adjoint case, which has received relatively little attention, is discussed in [12] and [13].

0. In [3], Fell introduced a topology on Rep (A,H), the collection of all non-null but possibly degenerate *-representations of the C*-algebra A on the Hilbert space H. This topology, which we will call the Fell topology, can be described by giving, as basic open neighbourhoods of π0 ∈ Rep(A, H), sets of the formwhere the ai ∈ A, and the ξj ∈ H(π0), the essential space of π0 [4].A principal result of [3, Theorem 3.1] is that if the Hilbert dimension of H is large enough to admit all irreducible representations of A, then the quotient space Irr(A, H)/∼ can be identified with the spectrum (or “dual“) Â of A, in its hull-kernel topology.

Around 1960, the Russian mathematician Kachurovski [1] introduced the notion of monotone operators in Hilbert spaces: Let E be a Hilbert space and X ⊂ E. An operator T:X→E is said to be monotone, iff.

Abstract We produce a simple criterion and a constructive recipe to identify those self-adjoint extensions of a lower semi-bounded symmetric operator on Hilbert space which have the same lower bound as the Friedrichs extension. Applications of this abstract result to a few instructive examples are then discussed.
