AbstractNew cranial and postcranial material of the baenid turtleNeurankylusfrom the Paleocene Nacimiento Formation (Torrejonian NALMA) of northwestern New Mexico represents a new species,Neurankylus torrejonensis. The material consists of a fragmented but mostly complete skull, a partial carapace and plastron, portions of both humeri, a partial pelvis, a complete right femur, and a distal phalanx. The small, undivided cervical scale, wide vertebrals, complete ring of marginals, and large size (carapace length 520 mm) diagnose the new taxon as belonging toNeurankylus. The narrow fifth vertebral scale and scalloped posterior shell margin reveal affinities withNeurankylus baueriGilmore, 1916, which is known from Campanian sediments in New Mexico and Utah. The holotype ofNeurankylus torrejonensisis the youngest known specimen of theNeurankyluslineage, which is known to reach at least back to the Late Cretaceous (Santonian). A nearly complete species-level analysis of baenids confirms the basal placement ofNeurankylusoutside of Baenodda and the split of Baenodda into two primary subclades, herein named Palatobaeninae and Eubaeninae.

A new species of Maytenus has been discovered in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The new taxon, Maytenus nemorosa, occurs mostly in ombrophilous rain forests at an elevation of 500 m to 1200 m. Maytenus nemorosa resembles M. gonoclada but differs from it by possessing oblong-elliptical leaves with entire margins and larger fruits with thicker pericarp walls. A phylogenetic analysis was conducted with nrITS and plastid matK regions, including the new species and additional taxa available from the NCBI-GenBank. The results from the phylogenetic analysis places Maytenus nemorosa nested within a clade of species that have fruits possessing a coriaceous pericarp and close to both Maytenus gonoclada and Maytenus salicifolia, as expected from morphological similarities. Additionally, M. cardenasii and M. erythrocarpa, from Bolivia, are both recognized as new synonyms for M. floribunda after an examination of their descriptions, types, and diverse collections.

Agaricus is a monophyletic genus with a worldwide distribution and more than 400 described species. The genus grows on soil and can be easily recognized by the presence of an annulus on the stipe and free lamellae which become dark brown with spore maturation. Although Agaricus is easily recognized in the field because of its macroscopic characters, identification at the species level is difficult. Based on specimens collected in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil, we propose a new species Agaricus globocystidiatus. The new taxon is distinguished mainly by the presence of pleurocystidia, a rare morphological character in Agaricus. Molecular analyses based on nuc rITS1-5.8-ITS2 (ITS) barcode sequences show that A. globocystidiatus belongs to Agaricus subg. Minoriopsis.

Begonia leipingensis D. K. Tian, L. H. Yang & C. Li (2n = 30), a new species in Begonia sect. Coelocentrum from the limestone area of Guangxi, China. B. leipingensisis is easily distinguished from any other compound-leaved species in Begonia by its large variation in petiolule number and its unique spirally-arranged petiolule pattern, which has never been seen in Begoniaceae before and rarely seen even in other angiosperm taxa. Besides having non-overlapping flowering periods, it is clearly different from B. fangii, the most morphologically similar species in the same section and with the same chromosome number. In addition to its unique petiolule pattern, B. leipingensis has longer abaxial wings, shorter internodes, and usually larger leaves, leaflets and habit. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that B. leipingensis formed an independent lineage belonging to Sect. Coelocentrum. Morphological and phylogenetic evidence strongly supports this species as a new taxon in Sect. Coelocentrum of Begonia. B. leipingensis was assessed to be critically endangered based on criterion outlined by IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

We describe the relatively complete skeleton of Tetraclaenodon undoubtedly associated with its dentition, from the Torrejonian interval of the Nacimiento Formation in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico. Tetraclaenodon is the most primitive and oldest genus of the family Phenacodontidae and is very important for assessing the phylogenetic relationships of the family. The newly described skeleton belonged to a lightly built terrestrial mammal that could use trees for shelter. The structure of the ulna, manus, femur, crus, and pes corresponds to that of a typical terrestrial mammal, while morphological features such as the low greater tubercle of the humerus, long deltopectoral crest, pronounced lateral supracondylar crest, and hemispherical capitulum indicate some scansorial adaptations of Tetraclaenodon. The postcranial skeleton of Tetraclaenodon does not exhibit the cursorial adaptations seen in later phenacodontids and early perissodactyls. Phylogenetic analysis did not recover monophyletic “Phenacodontidae”; instead, phenacodontids formed a series of sister taxa to the Altungulata clade. Tetraclaenodon is the basal-most member of the “Phenacodontidae” + Altungulata clade.

The largest known member of the mammalian order Multituberculata is the taeniolabidid Taeniolabis, which is known from Puercan (early Paleocene) localities in northern New Mexico, Utah, Montana, and southern Saskatchewan. A locality in the Ludlow Formation of southeastern Montana has produced remains of a new species, T. lamberti n. sp., which is based on a well-preserved dentary with teeth. Isolated teeth from the Tullock Formation of northeastern Montana are referred to T. lamberti n. sp. and Taeniolabis sp.Taeniolabis triserialis, known exclusively from the San Juan Basin, New Mexico, is shown to be a junior synonym of T. taoensis. Taeniolabis sulcatus, the type species of the genus, is recognized as a nomen dubium and is synonymized with T. taoensis based on general morphology and occurrence in the same stratigraphic unit and collecting area (lower part of the Nacimiento Formation, San Juan Basin, New Mexico). The name T. taoensis is retained for this taxon in the interest of nomenclatorial stability. These synonymies limit to one the number of species of Taeniolabis recognized in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico. It is proposed that T. taoensis be designated the new type species of the genus Taeniolabis.

Didymodon californicus is described as a new species from California, U.S.A. The new taxon is included in sect. Vineales (Steere) R.H. Zander, and characterized mainly by its large size, lanceolate leaves, plane margins throughout, the red to reddish orange color in KOH, costa ending below the apex, a hyaline area of rectangular cells on ventral surface of the costa, cross-section of the costa with numerous guide cells in 2–3 layers and without ventral stereids, and smooth to low-papillose laminal cells. Drawings and light microscope photographs of the main characters are given, and possible confusion with other closely related taxa is discussed.

A new Seifertia species was isolated from hanging rachides of Rhododendron decorum in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The new taxon was compared with the type species, S. azalea and differs in having wider conidiophores, with hyaline to subhyaline and smaller conidia, while S. azalea has olive-brown to brown, rarely branched conidiophores, and pale brown or olive-brown, very rarely septate conidia. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU and TEF1-α sequence data show that S. shangrilaensis forms a robust clade with S. azalea nested among the species of Melanommataceae in the order Pleosporales. A new species, S. shangrilaensis is introduced in this study, and Seifertia should be placed in Melanommataceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) based on phylogenetic analysis. Description and illustration of Seifertia shangrilaensis are provided with notes and its introduction is supported by molecular data.

Thinouia is a Neotropical genus of lianas with approximately 12 species and is the only genus in tribe Paullinieae with actinomorphic flowers. During a taxonomic revision of the genus and fieldwork in south-western Amazonia, we found a new species that appears similar to Thinouia trifoliata (ex Allosanthus) because of its racemiform inflorescence. However, before describing the new species, we had to confirm that Allosanthus was congeneric with Thinouia so we could place the new species in the correct genus. The results of the phylogenetic analysis, based on molecular data (trnL intron and ITS sequences), show that Allosanthus should be included in Thinouia. Thus, the new taxon is described here as Thinouia cazumbensissp. nov. The new species is described, illustrated and phylogenetic trees showing relationships within supertribe Paulliniodae and Thinouia and the congeneric Allosanthus are given.

Fungal samples were collected in the Sangay (SP) and Llanganates (LP) National Parks in Ecuador. Sequences of the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) of the ribosomal DNA of the samples were analyzed.Taxonomic identification of fungi of the order Xylariales was done through phylogenetic analysis using a Maximun Likelihood method. All analyzed collections presented here belong to the genus Xylaria, of these eight belong to PL and two to SP. Four samples were not identified at the species level, suggesting it could be a new species. This data contributes with base information on the biodiversity of the Parks, necessary to design and implement measures for the conservation of fungi in Ecuador.

A new genus with a new species Eusarimissus hezhouensisgen. nov. et sp. nov. from Guangxi Province of China are described in the tribe Sarimini of the family Issidae. Molecular sequences of 18S, 28S and COXI genes are provided for the new taxon. Phylogenetic analysis places this taxon sister to a previously sequenced but not yet described Sarimini genus ‘Eusarima sp. 4’. Taxonomic notes are provided for the genus Eusarima Yang, 1994. The species Eusarima (Nepalius) iranica Gnezdilov & Mozaffarian, 2011 is transferred to the genus Sarima Melichar 1903.
