Prediction of compressible turbulent boundary layer via a symmetry-based length model

A recently developed symmetry-based theory is extended to derive an algebraic model for compressible turbulent boundary layers (CTBL) – predicting mean profiles of velocity, temperature and density – valid from incompressible to hypersonic flow regimes, thus achieving a Mach number ($Ma$) invariant description. The theory leads to a multi-layer analytic form of a stress length function which yields a closure of the mean momentum equation. A generalized Reynolds analogy is then employed to predict the turbulent heat transfer. The mean profiles and the friction coefficient are compared with direct numerical simulations of CTBL for a range of$Ma$from 0 (e.g. incompressible) to 6.0 (e.g. hypersonic), with an accuracy notably superior to popular current models such as Baldwin–Lomax and Spalart–Allmaras models. Further analysis shows that the modification is due to an improved eddy viscosity function compared to competing models. The results confirm the validity of our$Ma$-invariant stress length function and suggest the path for developing turbulent boundary layer models which incorporate the multi-layer structure.

Fourier’s law, which forms the basis of most engineering prediction methods for the turbulent heat fluxes, is known to fail badly in capturing the effects of streamline curvature on the rate of heat transfer in turbulent shear flows. In this paper, an alternative model, which is both algebraic and explicit in the turbulent heat fluxes and which has been formulated from tensor-representation theory, is presented, and its applicability is extended by incorporating the effects of a wall on the turbulent heat transfer processes in its vicinity. The model’s equations for flows with curvature in the plane of the mean shear are derived and calculations are performed for a heated turbulent boundary layer, which develops over a flat plate before encountering a short region of high convex curvature. The results show that the new model accurately predicts the significant reduction in the wall heat transfer rates wrought by the stabilizing-curvature effects, in sharp contrast to the conventional model predictions, which are shown to seriously underestimate the same effects. Comparisons are also made with results from a complete heat-flux transport model, which involves the solution of differential transport equations for each component of the heat-flux tensor. Downstream of the bend, where the perturbed boundary layer recovers on a flat wall, the comparisons show that the algebraic model yields indistinguishable predictions from those obtained with the differential model in regions where the mean-strain field is in rapid evolution and the turbulence processes are far removed from local equilibrium.

Materials exposed in the marine environment, including those protected by antifouling paints, may rapidly become colonized by microfouling. This may affect frictional resistance and turbulent boundary layer structure. This study compares the mean and turbulent boundary layer velocity characteristics of surfaces covered with a marine biofilm with those of a smooth surface. Measurements were made in a nominally zero pressure gradient, boundary layer flow with a two-component laser Doppler velocimeter at momentum thickness Reynolds numbers of 5600 to 19,000 in a recirculating water tunnel. Profiles of the mean and turbulence velocity components, including the Reynolds shear stress, were measured. An average increase in the skin friction coefficient of 33 to 187 percent was measured on the fouled specimens. The skin friction coefficient was found to be dependent on both biofilm thickness and morphology. The biofilms tested showed varying effect on the Reynolds stresses when those quantities were normalized with the friction velocity.

A series of experimental measurements of flow and heat transfer under streamwise Go¨rtler vortices shows conclusively that the local surface heat transfer rates can exceed that of the turbulent boundary layer even in the absence of turbulence. We have observed unexpected behavior of heat transfer in a laminar boundary layer on a concave wall at low nominal velocity, a configuration ignored in the literature. In this situation, precise measurements of the wall heat flux show that the heat transfer enhancement is extremely elevated, above that corresponding to the case of a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate. The nonlinearly developing steady streamwise vortex (primary instability) heat transfer can already bridge the local laminar to turbulent heat transfer values in the absence of turbulence. The analysis shows that for a range of velocities less than a certain critical velocity, the transitional boundary layer is dominated by centrifugal instability. However, the steady streamwise vortices, like steady Taylor vortices between coaxial rotating cylinders, are susceptible to secondary instabilities of the varicose and sinuous modes. In experiments both modes appear to coexist and cause waviness of the primary streamwise vortices. Other results confirm this discussion based on analysis of the influence of a forcing upstream disturbance.

The results of an experimental investigation of the mean- and fluctuating-flow properties of a compressible turbulent boundary layer in a shock-wave-induced adverse pressure gradient are presented. The turbulent boundary layer developed on the wall of an axially symmetric nozzle and test section whose nominal free-stream Mach number and boundary-layer-thickness Reynolds number were 4 and 105, respectively. The adverse pressure gradient was induced by an externally generated, conical shock wave.Mean and time-averaged fluctuating-flow data, including the experimental Reynolds shear stresses and experimental turbulent heat-transfer rates, are presented for the boundary layer and external flow, upstream, within and downstream of the pressure gradient. The turbulent mixing properties of the flow were determined experimentally with a hot-wire anemometer. The calibration of the wires and the interpretation of the data are discussed.From the results of the investigation, it is concluded that the shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction significantly alters the shear-stress characteristics of the boundary layer.

Recent studies reveal that at large friction Reynolds number $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{+}$ the inertially dominated region of the turbulent boundary layer is composed of large-scale zones of nearly uniform momentum segregated by narrow fissures of concentrated vorticity. Experiments show that, when scaled by the boundary-layer thickness, the fissure thickness is $\mathit{O}(1/\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{+}})$, while the dimensional jump in streamwise velocity across each fissure scales in proportion to the friction velocity $u_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$. A simple model that exploits these essential elements of the turbulent boundary-layer structure at large $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{+}$ is developed. First, a master wall-normal profile of streamwise velocity is constructed by placing a discrete number of fissures across the boundary layer. The number of fissures and their wall-normal locations follow scalings informed by analysis of the mean momentum equation. The fissures are then randomly displaced in the wall-normal direction, exchanging momentum as they move, to create an instantaneous velocity profile. This process is repeated to generate ensembles of streamwise velocity profiles from which statistical moments are computed. The modelled statistical profiles are shown to agree remarkably well with those acquired from direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow at large $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}^{+}$. In particular, the model robustly reproduces the empirically observed sub-Gaussian behaviour for the skewness and kurtosis profiles over a large range of input parameters.

An effort is made to understand turbulence in fluid systems like the oceans and atmosphere in which the Richardson number is generally large. Toward this end, a theory is developed for turbulent flow over a flat plate which is moved and cooled in such a way as to produce constant vertical fluxes of momentum and heat. The theory indicates that in a co-ordinate system fixed in the plate the mean velocity increases linearly with heightzabove a turbulent boundary layer and the mean density decreases asz3, so that the Richardson number is large far from the plate. Near the plate, the results reduce to those of Monin & Obukhov.Thecurvatureof the density profile is essential in the formulation of the theory. When the curvature is negative, a volume of fluid, thoroughly mixed by turbulence, will tend to flatten out at a new level well above the original centre of mass, thereby transporting heat downward. When the curvature is positive a mixed volume of fluid will tend to fall a similar distance, again transporting heat downward. A well-mixed volume of fluid will also tend to rise when the density profile is linear, but this rise is negligible on the basis of the Boussinesq approximation. The interchange of fluid of different, mean horizontal speeds in the formation of the turbulent patch transfers momentum. As the mixing in the patch destroys the mean velocity shear locally, kinetic energy is transferred from mean motion to disturbed motion. The turbulence can arise in spite of the high Richardson number because the precise variations of mean density and mean velocity mentioned above permit wave energy to propagate from the turbulent boundary layer to the whole region above the plate. At the levels of reflexion, where the amplitudes become large, wave-breaking and turbulence will tend to develop.The relationship between the curvature of the density profile and the transfer of heat suggests that the density gradient near the level of a point of inflexion of the density curve (in general cases of stratified, shearing flow) will increase locally as time goes on. There will also be a tendency to increase the shear through the action of local wave stresses. If this results in a progressive reduction in Richardson number, an ultimate outbreak of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability will occur. The resulting sporadic turbulence will transfer heat (and momentum) through the level of the inflexion point. This mechanism for the appearance of regions of low Richardson number is offered as a possible explanation for the formation of the surfaces of strong density and velocity differences observed in the oceans and atmosphere, and for the turbulence that appears on these surfaces.
