We investigate theoretically the near-wall region in elastic turbulence of a dilute polymer solution in the limit of large Weissenberg number. As has been established experimentally, elastic turbulence possesses a boundary layer where the fluid velocity field can be approximated by a steady shear flow with relatively small fluctuations on the top of it. Assuming that at the bottom of the boundary layer the dissolved polymers can be considered as passive objects, we examine analytically and numerically the statistics of the polymer conformation, which is highly non-uniform in the wall-normal direction. Next, imposing the condition that the passive regime terminates at the border of the boundary layer, we obtain an estimate for the ratio of the mean flow to the magnitude of the flow fluctuations. This ratio is determined by the polymer concentration, the radius of gyration of polymers and their length in the fully extended state. The results of our asymptotic analysis reproduce the qualitative features of elastic turbulence at finite Weissenberg numbers.

Many practical applications, such as in blade cascades and turbomachinery, involve inhomogeneous turbulent shear flows subjected simultaneously to multiple strains. In principle, the applied strain can be combined to yield an effective strain. However, no simple stress–strain relation is capable of establishing turbulent stress or energy balance in the mean or on an instantaneous basis. In the current investigation, a turbulent boundary layer is examined in the presence of convex curvatures of different strengths combined with streamwise (favourable and adverse) pressure gradients, with various values of pressure gradient ratio, (∂P/∂s)/(∂P/∂n). Measurements of the mean and turbulent parameters and flux Richardson number show appreciable changes, mainly in the outer portion of the boundary layer (y+ > 100). The turbulent burst frequency, particularly at the location of application of the additional strain rate, also changes relative to its value with wall curvature alone.Three primary observations from these experiments are as follows: (i) in all cases, the mean velocity profile and all of the measured Reynolds stresses collapse in the near-wall region using standard inner scaling; (ii) the applied strains combine nonlinearly, with one of the strains dominating the local flow during its development; (iii) the ratio of the radial to axial pressure gradient magnitude influences both classical turbulence correlations and mean flow, as well as the physical production cycle of turbulence; and (iv) application rate of newly introduced strain rates is at least as important as their magnitudes.

The experimental results for an equilibrium boundary layer in a strong adverse pressure gradient flow are reported. The measurements show that similarity in the mean flow and the turbulent stresses has been achieved over a substantial streamwise distance where the skin friction coefficient is kept at a low, constant level. Although the Reynolds stress distribution across the layer is entirely different from the flow at zero pressure gradient, the ratios between the different turbulent stress components were found to be similar, showing that the mechanism for distributing the turbulent energy between the different components remains unaffected by the mean flow pressure gradient. Close to the surface the gradient of the mixing length was found to increase from Kl ≈ 0.41 to Kl ≈ 0.78, almost twice as high as for the zero pressure gradient case. Similarity in the triple correlations was also found to be good. The correlations show that there is a considerable diffusion of turbulent energy from the central part of the boundary layer towards the wall. The diffusion mechanism is caused by a second peak in the turbulence production, located at y/δ ≈ 0.45. This production was for the present case almost as strong as the production found near the wall. The energy budget for the turbulent kinetic energy also shows that strong dissipation is not restricted to the wall region, but is significant for most of the layer.

An experimental investigation was conducted at selected locations in the wall region of a three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer relaxing in a nominally zero external pressure gradient behind a transverse hump (in the form of a 30° swept, 5 ft chord, wing-type model) faired into the side wall of a low-speed wind tunnel. The boundary layer (approximately 3·5 in. thick near the first survey station, where the length Reynolds number was 5·5 × 106) had a maximum cross-flow velocity ratio of 0·145 and a maximum cross-flow angle of 21·9° close to the wall. The hot-wire data indicated that the apparent dimensionless velocity profiles in the viscous sublayer are universal and that the wall influence on the hot wire is negligible beyond y+= 5. The existence of wall similarity in the relaxing flow field was confirmed in the form of a log law based on the resultant mean velocity and resultant friction velocity (obtained from the measured skin friction).The smallest collateral region extended from the point nearest to the wall (y+≈ 1) up to y+= 9·7, corresponding to a resultant mean velocity ratio (local to free-stream) of 0·187. The unusual feature of these profiles was the presence of a narrow region of slightly decreasing cross-flow angle (1° or less) that extended from the point of maximum cross-flow angle down to the outer limit of the collateral region. A sublayer analysis of the flow field using the measured local transverse pressure gradient slightly overestimated the decrease in cross-flow angle. It is concluded that, in the absence of these gradients, the skewing of the flow could have been much more pronounced practically down to the wall (limited only by the resolution of the sensor), implying a near-wallnon-collateralflow field consistent with the equations of motion in the neighbourhood of the wall.The streamwise relaxation of the mean flow field based on the decay of the cross-flow angle was much faster in the inner layer than in the outer layer. Over the stream-wise distance covered, the mean flow in the inner layer and the wall shear-stress vector relaxed to a two-dimensional state in approximately 10 boundary-layer thicknesses whereas the relaxation of the turbulence was slower and was not complete over the same distance.

An experimental investigation of a turbulent boundary-layer flow over a heterogeneous surface is carried out to examine the mean flow and turbulence characteristics, and to document the variation of skin friction that might affect the applicability of traditional scaling and similarity laws. The heterogeneity is imposed along the spanwise direction and consists of streamwise-aligned smooth raised strips whose spanwise spacing $S$ is comparable to the boundary-layer thickness ($S/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}=O(1)$). Single-point velocity measurements alongside direct skin-friction measurements are used to examine the validity of Townsend’s similarity hypothesis. The skin-friction coefficients reveal that the drag of the heterogeneous surface increased up to 35 % compared to a smooth wall, while velocity measurements reveal the existence of a log layer but with a zero-plane displacement and a roughness function that vary across the spanwise direction. Lack of collapse in the outer region of the mean velocity and variance profiles is attributed to the secondary flows induced by the heterogeneous surfaces. Additionally, the lack of similarity also extends to the spectra across all scales in the near-wall region with a gradual collapse at small wavelengths for increasing $S$. This suggests that the effect of surface heterogeneity is not necessarily felt at the smaller scales other than to reorganise their presence through turbulent transport.

Stereo Particle Image velocimetry data was collected over high aspect ratio flexible cylinders (L/a = 1.5 to 3 × 105) to evaluate the axial development of the turbulent boundary layer where the boundary layer thickness becomes significantly larger than the cylinder diameter (δ/a>>1). The flexible cylinders are approximately neutrally buoyant and have an initial length of 152 m and radii of 0.45 mm and 1.25 mm. The cylinders were towed at speeds ranging from 3.8 to 15.4 m/sec in the David Taylor Model Basin. The analysis of the SPIV data required a several step procedure to evaluate the cylinder boundary flow. First, the characterization of the flow field from the towing strut is required. This evaluation provides the residual mean velocities and turbulence levels caused by the towing hardware at each speed and axial location. These values, called tare values, are necessary for comparing to the cylinder flow results. Second, the cylinder flow fields are averaged together and the averaged tare fields are subtracted out to remove strut-induced ambient flow effects. Prior to averaging, the cylinder flow fields are shifted to collocate the cylinder within the field. Since the boundary layer develops slowly, all planes of data occurring within each 10 meter increment of the cylinder length are averaged together to produce the mean boundary layer flow. Corresponding fields from multiple runs executed using the same experimental parameters are also averaged. This flow is analyzed to evaluate the level of axisymmetry in the data and determine if small changes in cylinder angle affect the mean flow development. With axisymmetry verified, the boundary flow is further averaged azimuthally around the cylinder to produce mean boundary layer profiles. Finally, the fluctuating velocity levels are evaluated for the flow with the cylinder and compared to the fluctuating velocity levels in the tare data. This paper will first discuss the data analysis techniques for the tare data and the averaging methods implemented. Second, the data analysis considerations will be presented for the cylinder data and the averaging and cylinder tracking techniques. These results are used to extract relevant boundary layer parameters including δ, δ* and θ. Combining these results with wall shear and momentum thickness values extracted from averaged cylinder drag data, the boundary layer can be well characterized.

Experiments were performed over a body of revolution at a length-based Reynolds number of 1.9 million. While the lateral curvature parameters are moderate ( $\delta /r_s < 2, r_s^+>500$ , where $\delta$ is the boundary layer thickness and r s is the radius of curvature), the pressure gradient is increasingly adverse ( $\beta _{C} \in [5 \text {--} 18]$ where $\beta_{C}$ is Clauser’s pressure gradient parameter), representative of vehicle-relevant conditions. The mean flow in the outer regions of this fully attached boundary layer displays some properties of a free-shear layer, with the mean-velocity and turbulence intensity profiles attaining self-similarity with the ‘embedded shear layer’ scaling (Schatzman & Thomas, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 815, 2017, pp. 592–642). Spectral analysis of the streamwise turbulence revealed that, as the mean flow decelerates, the large-scale motions energize across the boundary layer, growing proportionally with the boundary layer thickness. When scaled with the shear layer parameters, the distribution of the energy in the low-frequency region is approximately self-similar, emphasizing the role of the embedded shear layer in the large-scale motions. The correlation structure of the boundary layer is discussed at length to supply information towards the development of turbulence and aeroacoustic models. One major finding is that the estimation of integral turbulence length scales from single-point measurements, via Taylor's hypothesis, requires significant corrections to the convection velocity in the inner 50 % of the boundary layer. The apparent convection velocity (estimated from the ratio of integral length scale to the time scale), is approximately 40 % greater than the local mean velocity, suggesting the turbulence is convected much faster than previously thought. Closer to the wall even higher corrections are required.

The laminar boundary layer on a magnetized plate, when the magnetic field oscillates in magnitude about a constant non-zero mean, is analysed. For low-frequency fluctuations the solution is obtained by a series expansion in terms of a frequency parameter, while for high frequencies the flow pattern is of the ‘skin-wave’ type unaffected by the mean flow. In the low-frequency range, the phase lead and the amplitude of the skin-friction oscillations increase at first and then decrease to their respective ‘skin-wave’ values. On the other hand the phase angle of the surface current decreases from 90° to 45° and its amplitude increases with frequency.

Models for the distribution of the wall-pressure under a turbulent boundary layer often estimate the coherence of the cross-spectral density in terms of a product of two coherence functions. One such function describes the coherence as a function of separation distance in the mean-flow direction, the other function describes the coherence in the cross-stream direction. Analysis of data from a large-eddy simulation of a turbulent boundary layer reveals that this approximation dramatically underpredicts the coherence for separation directions that are neither aligned with nor perpendicular to the mean-flow direction. These models fail even when the coherence functions in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the mean flow are known exactly. A new approach for combining the parallel and perpendicular coherence functions is presented. The new approach results in vastly improved approximations for the coherence.

Abstract We present a one-parameter model that fits quantitatively the mean velocity profiles from experiments and numerical simulations of drag-reduced wall-bounded flows of dilute solutions of polymers and non-Brownian fibers in the low and modest drag reduction regime. The model is based on a viscous mechanism of drag reduction, in which either extended polymers or non-Brownian fibers increase the extensional viscosity of the fluid and thereby suppress both small and large turbulent eddies and reduce momentum transfer to the wall, resulting in drag reduction. Our model provides a rheological interpretation of the upward parallel shift S+ in the mean velocity profile upon addition of polymer, observed by Virk. We show that Virk’s correlations for the dependence on polymer molecular weight and concentration of the onset wall shear stress and slope increment on the Prandtl-Karman plot can be translated to two dimensionless numbers, namely an onset Weissenberg number and an asymptotic Trouton ratio of maximum extensional viscosity to zero-shear viscosity. We believe that our model, while simple, captures the essential features of drag reduction that are universal to flexible polymers and fibers, and, unlike the Virk phenomenology, can easily be extended to flows with inhomogeneous polymer or fiber concentration fields.

The turbulent character of the supersonic wake of a linear cascade of fan airfoils has been studied using a two-component laser-doppler anemometer. The cascade was tested in the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University intermittent wind tunnel facility, where the Mach and Reynolds numbers were 2.36 and 4.8 × 106, respectively. In addition to mean flow measurements, Reynolds normal and shear stresses were measured as functions of cascade incidence angle and streamwise locations spanning the near-wake and the far-wake. The extremities of profiles of both the mean and turbulent wake properties´ were found to be strongly influenced by upstream shock-boundary -layer interactions, the strength of which varied with cascade incidence. In contrast, the peak levels of turbulence properties within the shear layer were found to be largely independent of incidence, and could be characterized in terms of the streamwise position only. The velocity defect turbulence level was found to be 23 percent, and the generally accepted value of the turbulence structural coefficient of 0.30 was found to be valid for this flow. The degree of similarity of the mean flow wake profiles was established, and those profiles demonstrating the most similarity were found to approach a state of equilibrium between the mean and turbulent properties. In general, this wake flow may be described as a classical free shear flow, upon which the influence of upstream shock-boundary-layer interactions has been superimposed.
