Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a sphere represents one of the most generic fundamental fluid–structure interaction problems. Since vortex-induced vibration can lead to structural failure, numerous studies have focused on understanding the underlying principles of VIV and its suppression. This paper reports on an experimental investigation of the effect of imposed axial rotation on the dynamics of vortex-induced vibration of a sphere that is free to oscillate in the cross-flow direction, by employing simultaneous displacement and force measurements. The VIV response was investigated over a wide range of reduced velocities (i.e. velocity normalised by the natural frequency of the system): $3\leqslant U^{\ast }\leqslant 18$, corresponding to a Reynolds number range of $5000<Re<30\,000$, while the rotation ratio, defined as the ratio between the sphere surface and inflow speeds, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=|\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}|D/(2U)$, was varied in increments over the range of $0\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\leqslant 7.5$. It is found that the vibration amplitude exhibits a typical inverted bell-shaped variation with reduced velocity, similar to the classic VIV response for a non-rotating sphere but without the higher reduced velocity response tail. The vibration amplitude decreases monotonically and gradually as the imposed transverse rotation rate is increased up to $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=6$, beyond which the body vibration is significantly reduced. The synchronisation regime, defined as the reduced velocity range where large vibrations close to the natural frequency are observed, also becomes narrower as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ is increased, with the peak saturation amplitude observed at progressively lower reduced velocities. In addition, for small rotation rates, the peak amplitude decreases almost linearly with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$. The imposed rotation not only reduces vibration amplitudes, but also makes the body vibrations less periodic. The frequency spectra revealed the occurrence of a broadband spectrum with an increase in the imposed rotation rate. Recurrence analysis of the structural vibration response demonstrated a transition from periodic to chaotic in a modified recurrence map complementing the appearance of broadband spectra at the onset of bifurcation. Despite considerable changes in flow structure, the vortex phase ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{vortex}$), defined as the phase between the vortex force and the body displacement, follows the same pattern as for the non-rotating case, with the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{vortex}$ increasing gradually from low values in Mode I of the sphere vibration to almost $180^{\circ }$ as the system undergoes a continuous transition to Mode II of the sphere vibration at higher reduced velocity. The total phase ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}_{total}$), defined as the phase between the transverse lift force and the body displacement, only increases from low values after the peak amplitude response in Mode II has been reached. It reaches its maximum value (${\sim}165^{\circ }$) close to the transition from the Mode II upper plateau to the lower plateau, reminiscent of the behaviour seen for the upper to lower branch transition for cylinder VIV. Hydrogen-bubble visualisations and particle image velocimetry (PIV) performed in the equatorial plane provided further insights into the flow dynamics near the sphere surface. The mean wake is found to be deflected towards the advancing side of the sphere, associated with an increase in the Magnus force. For higher rotation ratios, the near-wake rear recirculation zone is absent and the flow is highly vectored from the retreating side to the advancing side, giving rise to large-scale shedding. For a very high rotation ratio of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}=6$, for which vibrations are found to be suppressed, a one-sided large-scale shedding pattern is observed, similar to the shear-layer instability one-sided shedding observed previously for a rigidly mounted rotating sphere.

Abstract Vortex-induced vibration is one of the predominant fundamental concepts for forced oscillation which attracts considerable practical engineering application for energy conversion. In this work, an oscillation of a mast arising as a result of wind force is utilized for energy conversion. The paradigm for energy conversion from vortex-induced vibration in the mast is the bladeless wind turbine. It consists of a rigid mass known as a mast, fixed in the spring of stiffness (k) and allowed to oscillate along the direction of the flow. In this work, four different types of mast have been fabricated and tested. The first is uniform tapered hollow conical mast (MAST1), the cross-section of the second is uniform tapered plus symbol (MAST2), the third is uniform tapered inversed plus symbol (MAST3) and the fourth is uniform tapered simple rectangular cross-section (MAST4). All the masts were fabricated using fiber carbon. The experiments were conducted in a versatile small wind turbine testing facility of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai. This test facility contained an open jet wind tunnel with variable frequency drive and other measuring instruments. The vibration sensor was located in the mast where it experienced a large oscillation in a free stream. In this experiment, an increase in wind velocity led to a terrible change in the amplitude of vibration. A vigorous oscillation was experienced in this mast at this critical frequency, when the natural frequency of the mast was synchronized with the frequency of the vortex shedding and the frequency of the oscillation of the mast. The total force in this oscillation was a summation of the body force due to the mass of the mast and vorticity force that is mainly which was the result of the shedding of the vortices. In this work, extensive studies have been carried out for Reynolds number ranging from 2.5 × 105 to 5.0 × 105. The mast length to diameter ratio of 13 was exposed to various speeds of wind and response was measured. The occurrence of the maximum oscillation in a simple rectangular mast was seen where vortex shedding due to the bluff body was large for constant mass and spring stiffness. The frequency of the oscillation at maximum amplitude of the rectangular cross-section mast was equal to the natural frequency, due to vortices shedding at critical velocity. This demonstrated the appropriateness of the simple rectangular cross-section for harnessing the low rated wind energy and its suitability for renewable energy conversion in the small bladeless wind turbine.

AbstractThe flow past a transversely rotating sphere at Reynolds numbers of $\mathit{Re}=500{-}1000$ is directly simulated using an unstructured finite volume collocated code. The effect of rotation rate on the flow is studied by increasing the dimensionless rotation rate, ${\it\Omega}^{\ast }$, from 0 to 1.20, where ${\it\Omega}^{\ast }$ is the maximum sphere surface velocity normalised by the free stream velocity. This study investigates the marked unsteadiness of the flow structures at $\mathit{Re}=500{-}1000$. Comparison with previous numerical data (Giacobello et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 621, 2009, pp. 103–130; Kim, J. Mech. Sci. Technol., vol. 23, 2009, pp. 578–589) reveals a new flow regime, namely a ‘shear layer–stable foci’ regime, besides the widely reported ‘vortex shedding’ and ‘shear layer instability’ regimes. The ‘shear layer–stable foci’ regime is observed at $\mathit{Re}=500$ and ${\it\Omega}^{\ast }=1.00$; $\mathit{Re}=640{-}1000$ and ${\it\Omega}^{\ast }\geqslant 0.80$. In this flow regime, the shear layer on the advancing side of the sphere (where the sphere surface velocity vector opposes the free stream velocity) shortens significantly while fluid from the retreating side (opposite to the advancing side) is drawn towards the mid-plane normal to the peripheral velocity. This results in the formation of a stable focus near the onset of the shear layer instability. This stable focus becomes more pronounced with increasing $\mathit{Re}$ and ${\it\Omega}^{\ast }$. It increases the oscillation magnitude and decreases the oscillation frequency of the hydrodynamic forces.

The flow-induced vibrations of an elastically mounted circular cylinder, free to oscillate in the direction parallel to the current and subjected to a forced rotation about its axis, are investigated by means of two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations, at a Reynolds number equal to 100 based on the cylinder diameter and inflow velocity. The cylinder is found to oscillate up to a rotation rate (ratio between the cylinder surface and inflow velocities) close to 2 (first vibration region), then the body and the flow are steady until a rotation rate close to 2.7 where a second vibration region begins. Each vibration region is characterized by a specific regime of response. In the first region, the vibration amplitude follows a bell-shaped evolution as a function of the reduced velocity (inverse of the oscillator natural frequency). The maximum vibration amplitudes, even though considerably augmented by the rotation relative to the non-rotating body case, remain lower than 0.1 cylinder diameters. Due to their trends as functions of the reduced velocity and to the fact that they develop under a condition of wake-body synchronization or lock-in, the responses of the rotating cylinder in this region are comparable to the vortex-induced vibrations previously described in the absence of rotation. The symmetry breaking due to the rotation is shown to directly impact the structure displacement and fluid force frequency contents. In the second region, the vibration amplitude tends to increase unboundedly with the reduced velocity. It may become very large, higher than 2.5 diameters in the parameter space under study. Such structural oscillations resemble the galloping responses reported for non-axisymmetric bodies. They are accompanied by a dramatic amplification of the fluid forces compared to the non-vibrating cylinder case. It is shown that body oscillation and flow unsteadiness remain synchronized and that a variety of wake topologies may be encountered in this vibration region. The low-frequency, large-amplitude responses are associated with novel asymmetric multi-vortex patterns, combining a pair and a triplet or a quartet of vortices per cycle. The flow is found to undergo three-dimensional transition in the second vibration region, with a limited influence on the system behaviour. It appears that the transition occurs for a substantially lower rotation rate than for a rigidly mounted cylinder.

The body weight of U.S. adults and children has risen markedly over the past three decades. The physical health consequences of obesity are widely documented, and emerging research from the Midlife in the United States study and other large-scale surveys reveals the harmful impact of obesity on adults’ psychosocial and interpersonal well-being. This chapter synthesizes recent research on the psychosocial implications of body weight, with attention to explanatory mechanisms and subgroup differences in these patterns. A brief statistical portrait of body weight is provided, documenting rates and correlates of obesity, with a focus on race, gender, and socioeconomic status disparities. The consequences of body weight for three main outcomes are described: institutional and everyday discrimination, interpersonal relationships, and psychological well-being. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the ways that recent integrative health research on the psychosocial consequences of overweight and obesity inform our understanding of population health.

We have developed a technique for estimating vibrations of an automotive body structures with viscoelastic damping materials using large-scale finite element (FE) model, which will enable us to grasp and to reduce high-frequency road noise(200~500Hz). In the new technique, first order solutions for modal loss factors are derived applying asymptotic method. This method saves calculation time to estimate modal damping as a practical tool in the design stages of the body structures. Frequency responses were calculated using this technique and the results almost agreed with the test results. This technique can show the effect of the viscoelastic damping materials on the automotive body panels, and it enables the more efficient layout of the viscoelastic damping materials. Further, we clarified damping properties of the automotive body structures under coupled vibration between frames and panels with the viscoelastic damping materials.

IntroductionDespite being considered a public health problem, no prevention programme for problem gambling in workplace settings has been scientifically evaluated. This study aims to fill a critical gap in the field of problem gambling by implementing and evaluating a large-scale prevention programme in organisations.Methods and analysisTen organisations, with a total of n=549 managers and n=8572 employees, will be randomised to either receiving a prevention programme or to a waitlist control condition. Measurements will be collected at the baseline and 3, 12 and 24 months after intervention. The primary outcome of interest is the managers’ inclination to act when worried or suspicious about an employee’s problem gambling or other harmful use. Additional outcomes of interest include the Problem Gambling Severity Index and gambling habits in both managers and employees. Furthermore, qualitative analyses of the responses from semistructured interviews with managers will be performed.Ethics and disseminationThis study has been approved by the regional ethics board of Stockholm, Sweden, and it will contribute to the body of knowledge concerning prevention of problem gambling. The findings will be published in peer-reviewed, open-access journals.Trial registration numberNCT02925286; Pre-results.

abstract The largest swarm of earthquakes of the last few decades accompanied the collapse of the Fernandina caldera in the Galapagos Islands in June of 1968. Many of the events were relatively large. (The largest 21 had moments ranging from 6 ×1024 to 12 ×1024 dyne-cm.) They produced teleseismic WWSSN records that were spectacularly consistent from event to event. The entire wave trains of the signals were nearly identical on any given component at any given station. This indicates that the mode of strain release in the region was unusually stable and coherent. The body waveforms of the events have been modeled with synthetic seismograms. The best fault plane solution was found to be: strike = 335°, dip = 47°, and rake = 247°. The depths of all the larger shocks were close to 14 km. Previous work had suggested that the seismic energy was radiated by the collapsing caldera block at a depth of about 1 km. The new results indicate that large scale extensional faulting at depth was an important part of the multifaceted event during which the caldera collapsed.

Planar motion of an orbiting body having a variable mass distribution in a central field of gravity is under analysis. Within the so-called ‘satellite approximation’ planar attitude dynamics is reduced to the 3/2-degrees of freedom description by one ODE of second order. The law of the mass distribution variations implying an existence of the special relative equilibria, such that the body is oriented pointing to the attracting centre by the same axis for any value of the orbit eccentricity is indicated. For particular example of an orbiting dumb-bell equipped by a massive cabin, wandering between the ends of the dumb-bell. For this example stability of the equilibria such that the dumb-bell ‘points to’ the attracting centre by one of its ends is studied. The chaoticity of global dynamics is investigated. Two important examples of a vibrating dumb-bell and of a dumb-bell equipped by a cabin wandering between its endpoints are considered. The dynamics of space objects, including moving elements, has been investigated by many authors. These studies usually have been connected with the necessity to estimate the influence of relative motions of moving parts, for example, crew motions [ 1 , 2 ], circulation of liquids [ 3 ], etc. on the attitude dynamics of a spacecraft. The development of projects of large-scale space systems with mobile elements, in particular, of satellite systems with tethered elements and space elevators, has posed problems related to their dynamics. Various aspects of the role of mass distribution even for the simplest orbiting systems, like dumb-bell systems are known since the publications [ 4 – 7 ], etc. The possibility of the sudden loss of stability because of the mass redistribution has been pointed out in reference [ 8 ] (see also references [ 9 – 13 ]). The considered system belongs to the mentioned class of systems and represents by itself one of the simplest systems allowing both analytical and numerical treatment, without supplementary simplifying assumptions such as smallness of the orbital eccentricity. Another set of applied problems is related to orientation keeping of the system for deployment and retrieval of tethered subsatellites as well as for relative cabin motions of space elevators. In particular, the problem of the stabilization/destabilization possibility for the given state of motion due to rapid oscillations of the cabin exists. This could be the subject of another additional investigation.

In this study, direct numerical simulation of the flow around a rotating sphere at high Mach and low Reynolds numbers is conducted to investigate the effects of rotation rate and Mach number upon aerodynamic force coefficients and wake structures. The simulation is carried out by solving the three-dimensional compressible Navier–Stokes equations. A free-stream Reynolds number (based on the free-stream velocity, density and viscosity coefficient and the diameter of the sphere) is set to be between 100 and 300, the free-stream Mach number is set to be between 0.2 and 2.0, and the dimensionless rotation rate defined by the ratio of the free-stream and surface velocities above the equator is set between 0.0 and 1.0. Thus, we have clarified the following points: (1) as free-stream Mach number increased, the increment of the lift coefficient due to rotation was reduced; (2) under subsonic conditions, the drag coefficient increased with increase of the rotation rate, whereas under supersonic conditions, the increment of the drag coefficient was reduced with increasing Mach number; and (3) the mode of the wake structure becomes low-Reynolds-number-like as the Mach number is increased.
