Direct numerical simulation of turbulence modulation by particles in compressible isotropic turbulence

In this paper, a systematic investigation of turbulence modulation by particles and its underlying physical mechanisms in decaying compressible isotropic turbulence is performed by using direct numerical simulations with the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-source approach. Particles interact with turbulence through two-way coupling and the initial turbulent Mach number is 1.2. Five simulations with different particle diameters (or initial Stokes numbers, $St_{0}$) are conducted while fixing both their volume fraction and particle densities. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for turbulence modulation are analysed through investigating the particle motion in the different cases and the transport equations of turbulent kinetic energy, vorticity and dilatation, especially the two-way coupling terms. Our results show that microparticles ($St_{0}\leqslant 0.5$) augment turbulent kinetic energy and the rotational motion of fluid, critical particles ($St_{0}\approx 1.0$) enhance the rotational motion of fluid, and large particles ($St_{0}\geqslant 5.0$) attenuate turbulent kinetic energy and the rotational motion of fluid. The compressibility of the turbulence field is suppressed for all the cases, and the suppression is more significant if the Stokes number of particles is close to 1. The modifications of turbulent kinetic energy, the rotational motion and the compressibility are all related with the particle inertia and distributions, and the suppression of the compressibility is attributed to the preferential concentration and the inertia of particles.

We report on optical field measurements of snow settling in atmospheric turbulence at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}=940$. It is found that the snowflakes exhibit hallmark features of inertial particles in turbulence. The snow motion is analysed in both Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks by large-scale particle imaging, while sonic anemometry is used to characterize the flow field. Additionally, the snowflake size and morphology are assessed by digital in-line holography. The low volume fraction and mass loading imply a one-way interaction with the turbulent air. Acceleration probability density functions show wide exponential tails consistent with laboratory and numerical studies of homogeneous isotropic turbulence. Invoking the assumption that the particle acceleration has a stronger dependence on the Stokes number than on the specific features of the turbulence (e.g. precise Reynolds number and large-scale anisotropy), we make inferences on the snowflakes’ aerodynamic response time. In particular, we observe that their acceleration distribution is consistent with that of particles of Stokes number in the range $St=0.1{-}0.4$ based on the Kolmogorov time scale. The still-air terminal velocities estimated for the resulting range of aerodynamic response times are significantly smaller than the measured snow particle fall speed. This is interpreted as a manifestation of settling enhancement by turbulence, which is observed here for the first time in a natural setting.

Direct numerical simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence laden with particles have been conducted to clarify the relationship between particle dispersion and coherent fine scale eddies in turbulence. Dispersion of 106 particles are analyzed for several particle Stokes numbers. The spatial distributions of particles depend on their Stokes number, and the Stokes number that causes preferential concentration of particles is closely related to the time scale of coherent fine scale eddies in turbulence. On the plane perpendicular to the rotating axes of fine scale eddies, number density of particle with particular Stokes number is low at the center of the fine scale eddy, and high in the regions with high energy dissipation rate around the eddy. The maximum number density can be observed at about 1.5 to 2.0 times the eddy radius on the major axis of the fine scale eddy.

Direct numerical simulations are rapidly becoming one of the most important techniques to examine the dynamics of multiphase flows. Lucci, Ferrante & Elghobashi (J. Fluid Mech., 2010, this issue, vol. 650, pp. 5–55) address several fundamental issues for spherical particles in isotropic turbulence. They show the importance of including the finite size of the particles and discuss how particles of a size comparable to the largest length scale at which viscosity substantially affects the turbulent eddies (i.e. the Taylor microscale) always increase the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy.

Gas-phase velocity fluctuations due to mean slip velocity between the gas and solid phases are quantified using particle-resolved direct numerical simulation. These fluctuations are termed pseudo-turbulent because they arise from the interaction of particles with the mean slip even in ‘laminar’ gas–solid flows. The contribution of turbulent and pseudo-turbulent fluctuations to the level of gas-phase velocity fluctuations is quantified in initially ‘laminar’ and turbulent flow past fixed random particle assemblies of monodisperse spheres. The pseudo-turbulent kinetic energy $k^{(f)}$ in steady flow is then characterized as a function of solid volume fraction ${\it\phi}$ and the Reynolds number based on the mean slip velocity $\mathit{Re}_{m}$. Anisotropy in the Reynolds stress is quantified by decomposing it into isotropic and deviatoric parts, and its dependence on ${\it\phi}$ and $Re_{m}$ is explained. An algebraic stress model is proposed that captures the dependence of the Reynolds stress on ${\it\phi}$ and $Re_{m}$. Gas-phase velocity fluctuations in freely evolving suspensions undergoing elastic and inelastic particle collisions are also quantified. The flow corresponds to homogeneous gas–solid systems, with high solid-to-gas density ratio and particle diameter greater than dissipative length scales. It is found that for the parameter values considered here, the level of pseudo-turbulence differs by only 15 % from the values for equivalent fixed beds. The principle of conservation of interphase turbulent kinetic energy transfer is validated by quantifying the interphase transfer terms in the evolution equations of kinetic energy for the gas-phase and solid-phase fluctuating velocity. It is found that the collisional dissipation is negligible compared with the viscous dissipation for the cases considered in this study where the freely evolving suspensions attain a steady state starting from an initial condition where the particles are at rest.

Detailed numerical data were presented for the development of a venturi-type water purifier which had a cavitation nozzle to enhance turbulent kinetic energy and vapor volume fraction. Numerical analysis for cavitation was conducted in multiphase flow using the software, cfx. The numerical method used in this study was verified by the experimental data of pressure distribution in tube and the observation of cavitation from previous studies. From the result of the numerical analysis, a logarithmic relation between the vapor volume fraction and volume flow rate of water according to the area ratio between the throat and the entrance of a venturi-tube was derived. In addition, spiral-shaped fins were developed to enhance the turbulent kinetic energy in the body of a venturi-tube. Thus, it was confirmed that the volume fraction and turbulent kinetic energy of the developed water purifier were enhanced compared with the normal venturi-tube without the spiral-shaped fin. Finally, the improved water treatment performance of the advanced design of the venturi-tube was confirmed by the removal test of the representative solutions.

AbstractAddition of particles or droplets to turbulent liquid flows or addition of droplets to turbulent gas flows can lead to modulation of turbulence characteristics. Corresponding observations have been reported for very small particle or droplet volume loadings ${\Phi }_{v} $ and therefore may be important when simulating such flows. In this work, a modelling framework that accounts for preferential concentration and reproduces isotropic and anisotropic turbulence attenuation effects is presented. The framework is outlined for both Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and joint probability density function (p.d.f.) methods. Validations are performed involving a range of particle and flow-field parameters and are based on the direct numerical simulation (DNS) study of Boivin, Simonin & Squires (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 375, 1998, pp. 235–263) dealing with heavy particles suspended in homogeneous isotropic turbulence (Stokes number $\mathit{St}= O(1{\unicode{x2013}} 10)$, particle/fluid density ratio ${\rho }_{p} / \rho = 2000$, ${\Phi }_{v} = O(1{0}^{- 4} )$) and the experimental investigation of Poelma, Westerweel & Ooms (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 589, 2007, pp. 315–351) involving light particles ($\mathit{St}= O(0. 1)$, ${\rho }_{p} / \rho \gtrsim 1$, ${\Phi }_{v} = O(1{0}^{- 3} )$) settling in grid turbulence. The development in this work is restricted to volume loadings where particle or droplet collisions are negligible.

This study was conducted to investigate effects of surface roughness on self-excited cavitating water jet intensity in an organ-pipe nozzle. Roughness average (Ra) values are 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, 6.3, 12.5, and 25 [Formula: see text]m, respectively. Numerical simulation results indicate that at inlet pressure of 10 MPa, the maximum, minimum, and real-time pressures in the self-excited oscillation chamber reach their respective peak values. The turbulent kinetic energy intensity in the external flow region is also most intense at this point, the vapor volume fraction in orifice is the highest, the vortex distribution scope in the orifice is the largest under [Formula: see text], and the self-excited cavitating water jet intensity is the strongest. The opposite variations emerge at [Formula: see text] compared to those of [Formula: see text], where the intensity is weakest. Pressure varies only slightly as Ra varies from 0.8 [Formula: see text]m to 6.3 [Formula: see text]m. Turbulent kinetic energy intensity behaves similarly as Ra increases from 0.8 [Formula: see text]m to 3.2 [Formula: see text]m. At [Formula: see text], it was weaker than at Ra = 0.8–3.2 [Formula: see text]m. Similarly, there are only slight differences in vapor volume fraction and vortex distribution scope with Ra from 0.8 [Formula: see text]m to 6.3 [Formula: see text]m. The intensities at Ra = 0.8–3.2 [Formula: see text]m are similar, and weaker at Ra = 6.3 [Formula: see text]m. Pressure values are maximal at inlet pressure of 20 MPa, turbulent kinetic energy intensity is most intense, vapor volume fraction is highest, vortex distribution scope is largest under [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]m, and intensity is strongest. Distinctions among pressure, turbulent kinetic energy intensity, vapor volume fraction, and vortex distribution scope values with Ra from 0.8 [Formula: see text]m to 3.2 [Formula: see text]m are slight. Differences in the corresponding intensities are also slight; all decrease with Ra from 12.5 [Formula: see text]m to 25 [Formula: see text]m as the intensity gradually weakens. Numerical simulation results were validated by comparison against corresponding experimental phenomena.

The behaviour of heavy particles in isotropic, homogeneous, decaying turbulence has been experimentally studied. The settling velocity of the particles has been found to be much larger than in a quiescent fluid. It has been determined that the enhancement of the settling velocity depends on the particle loading, increasing as the volume fraction of particles in the flow increases. The spatial and temporal distribution of the particle concentration field is shown to exhibit large inhomogeneities. As the particles interact with the underlying turbulence they concentrate preferentially in certain regions of the flow. A characteristic dimension of these particle clusters is found to be related to the viscous scales of the flow. Measurements of the settling velocity conditioned on the local concentration of particles in the flow have shown that there is a monotonic increase in the settling velocity with the local concentration (the relation being quasi-linear). A simple phenomenological model is proposed to explain this behaviour.

Interaction of isotropic quasi-incompressible turbulence with a weak shock wave was studied by direct numerical simulations. The effects of the fluctuation Mach number Mt of the upstream turbulence and the shock strength M21 — 1 on the turbulence statistics were investigated. The ranges investigated were 0.0567 ≤ Mt ≤ 0.110 and 1.05 ≤ M1 ≤ 1.20. A linear analysis of the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a normal shock wave was adopted for comparisons with the simulations.Both numerical simulations and the linear analysis of the interaction show that turbulence is enhanced during the interaction with a shock wave. Turbulent kinetic energy and transverse vorticity components are amplified, and turbulent lengthscales are decreased. The predictions of the linear analysis compare favourably with simulation results for flows with M2t < a(M21 — 1) with a ≈ 0.1, which suggests that the amplification mechanism is primarily linear. Simulations also showed a rapid evolution of turbulent kinetic energy just downstream of the shock, a behaviour not reproduced by the linear analysis. Investigation of the budget of the turbulent kinetic energy transport equation shows that this behaviour can be attributed to the pressure transport term.Shock waves were found to be distorted by the upstream turbulence, but still had a well-defined shock front for M2t < a(M21— 1) with a ≈ 0.1). In this regime, the statistics of shock front distortions compare favourably with the linear analysis predictions. For flows with M2t > a(M21— 1 with a ≈ 0.1, shock waves no longer had well-defined fronts: shock wave thickness and strength varied widely along the transverse directions. Multiple compression peaks were found along the mean streamlines at locations where the local shock thickness had increased significantly.

In order to investigate the turbulent drag reduction phenomenon and understand its mechanism, direct numerical simulation (DNS) was carried out on decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence (DHIT) with and without polymer additives. We explored the polymer effect on DHIT from the energetic viewpoint, i.e. the decay of the total turbulent kinetic energy and energy distribution at each scale in Fourier space and from the phenomenological viewpoint, i.e. the alterations of vortex structures, the enstrophy and the strain. It was obtained that in DHIT with polymer additives the decay of the turbulent kinetic energy is faster than that in the Newtonian fluid case and a modification of the turbulent kinetic energy transfer process for the Newtonian fluid flow is observed due to the release of the polymer elastic energy into flow structures at certain small scales. Besides, we deduced the transport equations of the enstrophy and the strain, respectively, for DHIT with polymer additives. Based on the analyses of these transport equations, it was found that polymer additives depress both the enstrophy and the strain in DHIT as compared to the Newtonian fluid case, indicating the inhibition effect on small-scale vortex structures and turbulence intensity by polymers.
