Jet-noise control by fluidic injection from a rotating plug: linear and nonlinear sound-source mechanisms

We present a study of the turbulent and acoustic fields of subsonic jets, controlled by means of a novel actuator that introduces perturbations via steady-fluidic actuation from a rotating centrebody. The actuation can produce louder or quieter jets, and these are analysed using time-resolved stereoscopic particle image velocimetry and a hot-wire anemometer. We place the analysis in the framework of wavepackets and linear stability theory, whence we show, using solutions of the linear parabolised stability equations, that the quieter flows can be understood to result from a mean-flow deformation that modifies wavepacket dynamics, and in particular their phase velocities, which are significantly reduced. The mean-flow deformation is shown, by a triple decomposition, to be due to the generation of Reynolds stresses associated with incoherent turbulence (rather than coherent structures) which arises when the actuation energises the flow with a frequency–azimuthal wavenumber (${\it\omega}$–$m$) combination to which the mean flow is stable. When the actuation excites the flow with an ${\it\omega}$–$m$ combination to which the mean flow is unstable, the response is dominated by coherent structures, whose rapid growth takes them beyond the linear limit, where they undergo quadratic wave interactions and lead, consequently, to a louder flow.

Abstract In recent years, lot of turbine research is focused on the study and optimization of inter-turbine ducts, an aero-engine component for which the design is becoming more challenging due to the turbofan architecture evolution. Starting from the early design phase, the knowledge of the component performance and outlet flow pattern is crucial in the design of the low pressure turbine. To improve prediction, multi-row unsteady simulations are deployed. Unfortunately, some questions arise in the use of these simulations, among others the knowledge of the turbulent boundary conditions and the contribution of the unsteady simulations to the flow solution. In this paper steady and time resolved RANS simulations of a turning inter-turbine duct are investigated. Particularly, two questions are addressed. The first one is the influence of the turbulent quantities boundary conditions in the case of a k–ω Wilcox turbulence model in the flow field solution. The second one is the contribution of the unsteadiness to the mean flow prediction. It will be shown that the mean flow depends on inlet turbulence only if the turbulence length scale is relatively high; otherwise the flow field is almost turbulence-invariant. For the unsteady simulations, unsteadiness modifies the mean flow solution only with low inlet turbulence.

We investigate the saturation of harmonically forced disturbances in the turbulent flow over a backward-facing step subjected to a finite amplitude forcing. The analysis relies on a triple decomposition of the unsteady flow into mean, coherent and incoherent components. The coherent–incoherent interaction is lumped into a Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) eddy viscosity model, and the mean–coherent interaction is analysed via a semi-linear resolvent analysis building on the laminar approach by Mantič-Lugo & Gallaire (2016 J. Fluid Mech. 793 , 777–797. ( doi:10.1017/jfm.2016.109 )). This provides a self-consistent modelling of the interaction between all three components, in the sense that the coherent perturbation structures selected by the resolvent analysis are those whose Reynolds stresses force the mean flow in such a way that the mean flow generates exactly the aforementioned perturbations, while also accounting for the effect of the incoherent scale. The model does not require any input from numerical or experimental data, and accurately predicts the saturation of the forced coherent disturbances, as established from comparison to time-averages of unsteady RANS simulation data.

Understanding the wake characteristics between two in-line vehicles is essential for improving and developing new strategies for reducing in-cabin air pollution. In this study, Ahmed bodies are used to investigate the effects of the rear slant angle of a leading vehicle on the mean flow and turbulent statistics between two vehicles. The experiments were conducted with a particle image velocimetry at a fixed Reynolds number, R e H = 1.7 × 10 4 , and inter-vehicle spacing distance of 0.75 L , where H and L are the height and length of the model. The rear slant angles investigated were a reference square back, high-drag angle ( α = 25 ° ) and low-drag angle ( α = 35 ° ). The mean velocities, Reynolds stresses, production of turbulent kinetic energy and instantaneous swirling strength are used to provide physical insight into the wake dynamics between the two bodies. The results indicate that the recirculation region behind the square back Ahmed body increases while those behind the slant rear-end bodies decreases in the presence of a follower. For the square back models, the dominant motion in the wake region is a strong upwash of jet-like flow away from the road but increasing the rear slant angle induces a stronger downwash flow that suppresses the upwash and dominates the wake region.

The resonance modes in Mach 0.94 turbulent flow over a cavity having a length-to-depth ratio of five were explored using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) and time-resolved pressure sensitive paint (TR-PSP). Mode switching was quantified in the velocity field simultaneous with the pressure field. As the mode number increased from one through three, the resonance activity moved from a region downstream within the recirculation region to areas further upstream in the shear layer, an observation consistent with linear stability analysis. The second and third modes contained organized structures associated with shear layer vortices. Coherent structures occurring in the velocity field during modes two and three exhibited a clear modulation in size with streamwise distance. The streamwise periodicity was attributable to the interference of downstream-propagating vortical disturbances with upstream-travelling acoustic waves. The coherent structure oscillations were approximately $180^{\circ }$ out of phase with the modal surface pressure fluctuations, analogous to a standing wave. Modal propagation (or phase) velocities, based on cross-correlations of bandpass-filtered velocity fields were found for each mode. The phase velocities also showed streamwise periodicity and were greatest at regions of maximum constructive interference where coherent structures were the largest. Overall, the phase velocities increased with modal frequency, which coincided with the modal activity residing at higher portions of the cavity where the local mean flow velocity was elevated. Together, the TR-PIV and TR-PSP provide unique details not only on the distribution of modal activity throughout the cavity, but also new understanding of the resonance mechanism as observed in the velocity field.

AbstractDominant frequencies and coherent structures are investigated in a turbulent, three-dimensional and separated diffuser flow at $\mathit{Re}= 10\hspace{0.167em} 000$ (based on bulk velocity and inflow-duct height), where mean flow characteristics were first studied experimentally by Cherry, Elkins and Eaton (Intl J. Heat Fluid Flow, vol. 29, 2008, pp. 803–811) and later numerically by Ohlsson et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 650, 2010, pp. 307–318). Coherent structures are educed by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the flow, which together with time probes located in the flow domain are used to extract frequency information. The present study shows that the flow contains multiple phenomena, well separated in frequency space. Dominant large-scale frequencies in a narrow band $\mathit{St}\equiv fh/ {u}_{b} \in [0. 0092, 0. 014] $ (where $h$ is the inflow-duct height and ${u}_{b} $ is the bulk velocity), yielding time periods ${T}^{\ensuremath{\ast} } = T{u}_{b} / h\in [70, 110] $, are deduced from the time signal probes in the upper separated part of the diffuser. The associated structures identified by the POD are large streaks arising from a sinusoidal oscillating motion in the diffuser. Their individual contributions to the total kinetic energy, dominated by the mean flow, are, however, small. The reason for the oscillating movement in this low-frequency range is concluded to be the confinement of the flow in this particular geometric set-up in combination with the high Reynolds number and the large separated zone on the top diffuser wall. Based on this analysis, it is shown that the bulk of the streamwise root mean square (r.m.s.) value arises due to large-scale motion, which in turn can explain the appearance of two or more peaks in the streamwise r.m.s. value. The weak secondary flow present in the inflow duct is shown to survive into the diffuser, where it experiences an imbalance with respect to the upper expanding corners, thereby giving rise to the asymmetry of the mean separated region in the diffuser.

Abstract A framework for parameterizing eddy potential vorticity fluxes is developed that is consistent with conservation of energy and momentum while retaining the symmetries of the original eddy flux. The framework involves rewriting the residual-mean eddy force, or equivalently the eddy potential vorticity flux, as the divergence of an eddy stress tensor. A norm of this tensor is bounded by the eddy energy, allowing the components of the stress tensor to be rewritten in terms of the eddy energy and nondimensional parameters describing the mean shape and orientation of the eddies. If a prognostic equation is solved for the eddy energy, the remaining unknowns are nondimensional and bounded in magnitude by unity. Moreover, these nondimensional geometric parameters have strong connections with classical stability theory. When applied to the Eady problem, it is shown that the new framework preserves the functional form of the Eady growth rate for linear instability. Moreover, in the limit in which Reynolds stresses are neglected, the framework reduces to a Gent and McWilliams type of eddy closure where the eddy diffusivity can be interpreted as the form proposed by Visbeck et al. Simulations of three-layer wind-driven gyres are used to diagnose the eddy shape and orientations in fully developed geostrophic turbulence. These fields are found to have large-scale structure that appears related to the structure of the mean flow. The eddy energy sets the magnitude of the eddy stress tensor and hence the eddy potential vorticity fluxes. Possible extensions of the framework to ensure potential vorticity is mixed on average are discussed.

AbstractBarotropic eddy fluxes are analyzed through a geometric decomposition of the eddy stress tensor. Specifically, the geometry of the eddy variance ellipse, a two-dimensional visualization of the stress tensor describing the mean eddy shape and tilt, is used to elucidate eddy propagation and eddy feedback on the mean flow. Linear shear and jet profiles are analyzed and theoretical results are compared against fully nonlinear simulations. For flows with zero planetary vorticity gradient, analytic solutions for the eddy ellipse tilt and anisotropy are obtained that provide a direct relationship between the eddy tilt and the phase difference of a normal-mode solution. This allows a straightforward interpretation of the eddy–mean flow interaction in terms of classical stability theory: the initially unstable jet gives rise to eddies that are tilted “against the shear” and extract energy from the mean flow; once the jet stabilizes, eddies become tilted “with the shear” and return their energy to the mean flow. For a nonzero planetary vorticity gradient, ray-tracing theory is used to predict ellipse geometry and its impact on eddy propagation within a jet. An analytic solution for the eddy tilt is found for a Rossby wave on a constant background shear. The ray-tracing results broadly agree with the eddy tilt diagnosed from a fully nonlinear simulation.

The flow in a linear turbine cascade (Gregory-Smith et al. (1990)) is numerically investigated using a Reynolds Stress Turbulence closure. A particular attention is given to secondary flows where the normal Reynolds stresses are expected to play an important role. The most classical turbulence closure, the k-epsilon model uses the Boussinesq Eddy Viscosity concept which assumes an isotropic turbulent viscosity. The Reynolds stresses are then related to local velocity gradients by this isotropic eddy viscosity. Corollary, the principal axes of the Reynolds stress tensor are colinear with those of the mean strain tensor. The advantage of Reynolds Stress Turbulence closure is the calculation of Reynolds stresses by their own individual transport equations. This leads to a more realistic description of the turbulence and of its dependance on the mean flow. The most classical Second Order turbulence model (Launder et al. (1975)) is applied to a linear turbine cascade, and the results are compared to secondary velocity and turbulence measurements at cross-passage planes.

Turbulent flow measurements were performed in the wake of a slender axisymmetric body in the presence of a flat plate strut and an image plane crudely representing the "rigid lid" approximation to a free surface. The tests were performed in a wind tunnel at a nominal Reynolds number of 6.0 ⨯ 105. A Yawhead probe was used for the mean flow measurements, and a Constant Temperature Anemometer System with an x-wire probe was used to obtain the turbulent flow characteristics. The presence of the image plane was found to increase the velocity defect and the static pressure as the image plane was approached. A redistribution among the various components of velocity fluctuations was noted near the image plane. The transverse component was enhanced at the expense of the normal component. The image plane also was found to influence the magnitudes and radial spread of turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses. Some interactions between the wake of the axisymmetric body and that of the plate strut were observed. Overall, the mean velocities and the turbulence quantities indicated symmetry about the image plane throughout the wake.

From time-resolved stereoscopic particle image velocimetry measurements over the entire circular cross section of a pipe, a first-of-its-kind quasi-instantaneous three-dimensional velocity field of a turbulent puff at a low Reynolds number is reconstructed. At the trailing edge of the puff, where the laminar flow undergoes transition to turbulence, pairs of counterrotating streamwise vortices are observed that form the legs of large hairpin vortices. At the upstream end of the puff, a quasi-periodic regeneration of streamwise vortices takes place. Initially, the vortex structure resembles a travelling wave solution, but as the vortices propagate into the turbulent region of the puff, they continue to develop into strong hairpin vortices. These hairpin vortices extract so much energy from the mean flow that they cannot be sustained. This structure provides a possible explanation for the intermittent character of the puffs in pipe flow at low Reynolds numbers.
