The dynamic behaviour of vortex cavitation on marine propellers may cause inboard noise and vibration, but is not well understood. The main goal of the present study is to experimentally analyse the dynamics of an isolated tip vortex cavity generated at the tip of a wing of elliptical planform. Detailed high-speed video shadowgraphy was used to determine the cavity deformations in combination with force and sound measurements. The cavity deformations can be divided in different modes, each of which show a distinct dispersion relation between frequency and wavenumber. The dispersion relations show good agreement with an analytical formulation. Finally, experimental support is given to the hypothesis that the resonance frequency of the cavity volume variation is related to a zero group velocity.

Experimental study on tip vortex cavitation (TVC) was carried out for elliptical hydrofoils with various chord lengths. The purpose of the experiment was to clarify the influences of Reynolds number and water quality on tip vortex cavitation. Experiments were made in a large cavitation tunnel of the Naval Systems Research Center, TRDI/Ministry of Defense Japan. The elliptical hydrofoils tested were NACA 0012 cross section with chord lengths of 500mm, 250mm and 50mm. Reynolds number based on hydrofoil chord length was 2×105 < ReC < 7.4×106. Water quality of the tunnel was characterized by air content and nuclei distribution. Air content of the tunnel was varied between 30% and 80%. Nuclei distribution was measured by a cavitation susceptibility meter (CSM) with center-body venturi. Cavitation inception was determined from high speed video observation. A standard formula, (σL/σS) = (ReL/ReS)n, was applied for the scaling. In the present study, exponent of the scaling law n was found to be 0.2 < n < 0.4. High speed video observation showed that the process of the TVC inception strongly depends on water quality. In the experiments, unsteady behaviors of TVC were also investigated. Strong interactions between sheet cavitation and TVC were observed.

A relatively high amplitude, discrete tone is radiated from fully developed tip vortex cavitation under certain conditions. The phenomenon of the “singing vortex” was first reported by Higuchi et al. (1989). This study more closely examines the singing phenomenon by varying the hydrofoil cross-section, scale, angle of attack, water quality, and cavitation number in two different facilities. Noise data were collected for each condition with visual documentation using both still photography and high speed video in an effort to explain the mechanism of vortex singing. The theory of Kelvin (1880) provides a framework for correlating all the data obtained.

Marine propellers display several forms of cavitation. Of these, propeller-tip vortex cavitation is one of the important factors in propeller design. The dynamic behaviour of the tip vortex is responsible for hull vibration and noise. Thus, cavitation in the vortices trailing from tips of propeller blades has been studied extensively. Under certain circumstances cavitating vortices have been observed to have wave-like disturbances on the surfaces of vapour cores. Intense sound at discrete frequencies can result from a coupling between tip vortex disturbances and oscillating sheet cavitation on the surfaces of the propeller blades. This research article focuses on the dynamics of vortex cavitation and more in particular on the energy and frequency content of the radiated pressures.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effects of far field boundary conditions on the solution of the three-dimensional Euler equations governing the flow field of a high-speed single rotation propeller. The results show that the solutions obtained with the nonreflecting boundary conditions are in good agreement with experimental data. The specification of nonreflecting boundary conditions is effective in reducing the dependence of the solution on the location of the far field boundary. Details of the flow field within the blade passage and the tip vortex are presented. The dependence of the computed power coefficient on the blade setting angle is examined.

Abstract In an effort to understand the dynamic hub forces on road vehicles, an advanced free-rolling tire-model is being developed in which the tread blocks and tire belt are modeled separately. This paper presents the interim results for the tread block modeling. The finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit is used to predict the contact forces on the tread blocks based on a linear viscoelastic material model. Special attention is paid to investigating the forces on the tread blocks during the impact and release motions. A pressure and slip-rate-dependent frictional law is applied in the analysis. A simplified numerical model is also proposed where the tread blocks are discretized into linear viscoelastic spring elements. The results from both models are validated via experiments in a high-speed rolling test rig and found to be in good agreement.

The results of using early damage diagnostics technique (developed in the Mechanical Engineering Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMASH RAN) for detecting the latent damage of an aviation panel made of composite material upon bench tensile tests are presented. We have assessed the capabilities of the developed technique and software regarding damage detection at the early stage of panel loading in conditions of elastic strain of the material using brittle strain-sensitive coating and simultaneous crack detection in the coating with a high-speed video camera “Video-print” and acoustic emission system “A-Line 32D.” When revealing a subsurface defect (a notch of the middle stringer) of the aviation panel, the general concept of damage detection at the early stage of loading in conditions of elastic behavior of the material was also tested in the course of the experiment, as well as the software specially developed for cluster analysis and classification of detected location pulses along with the equipment and software for simultaneous recording of video data flows and arrays of acoustic emission (AE) data. Synchronous recording of video images and AE pulses ensured precise control of the cracking process in the brittle strain-sensitive coating (tensocoating)at all stages of the experiment, whereas the use of structural-phenomenological approach kept track of the main trends in damage accumulation at different structural levels and identify the sources of their origin when classifying recorded AE data arrays. The combined use of oxide tensocoatings and high-speed video recording synchronized with the AE control system, provide the possibility of definite determination of the subsurface defect, reveal the maximum principal strains in the area of crack formation, quantify them and identify the main sources of AE signals upon monitoring the state of the aviation panel under loading P = 90 kN, which is about 12% of the critical load.

Rotating systems components such as rotors, have dynamic characteristics that are of great importance to understand because they may cause failure of turbomachinery. Therefore, it is required to study a dynamic model to predict some vibration characteristics, in this case, the natural frequencies and mode shapes (both of free vibration) of a centrifugal compressor shaft. The peculiarity of the dynamic model proposed is that using frequency and displacements values obtained experimentally, it is possible to calculate the mass and stiffness distribution of the shaft, and then use these values to estimate the theoretical modal parameters. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shaft were obtained with experimental modal analysis by using the impact test. The results predicted by the model are in good agreement with the experimental test. The model is also flexible with other geometries and has a great time and computing performance, which can be evaluated with respect to other commercial software in the future.
