Numerical investigation of flow and turbulence structure through and around a circular array of rigid cylinders

This numerical study investigates flow and turbulence structure through and around a circular array of solid circular cylinders of diameter $d$. The region containing the array of rigid cylinders resembles a porous circular cylinder of diameter $D$. The porous cylinder Reynolds number defined with the steady incoming flow velocity is $\mathit{Re}_{D}=10\,000$. Fully three-dimensional (3D) large eddy simulations (LES) are conducted to study the effects of the volume fraction of solids of the porous cylinder ($0.023<\text{SVF}<0.2$) and $d/D$ on the temporal variation and mean values of the drag/lift forces acting on the solid cylinders and on the porous cylinder. The effects of the bleeding flow through the circular porous cylinder on the wake structure and the influence of the SVF and $d/D$ on the onset of flow three-dimensionality within or downstream of the porous cylinder and transition to turbulence are discussed. Results are compared with experimental data, predictions of theoretical models available in the literature and also with the canonical case of a solid cylinder ($\text{SVF}=1,d/D=1$). Three-dimensional LES predict that large-scale wake billows are shed in the wake of the porous cylinder for $\text{SVF}>0.05$, similar to the von Karman vortex street observed for solid cylinders. As the SVF decreases, the length of the separated shear layers (SSLs) of the porous cylinder and the distance from the back of the porous cylinder at which wake billows form increase. For sufficiently low volume fractions of solids (e.g. $\text{SVF}=0.05$, 0.023), no wake billows are shed and the interactions among the wakes of the solid cylinders are weak. Even for $\text{SVF}=0.023$, SSLs containing large-scale turbulent eddies form on the two sides of the porous cylinder, but their ends cannot interact to generate wake billows. In both regimes, the force acting on some of the solid cylinders within the array is highly unsteady. As opposed to results obtained based on 2D simulations, no intermediate regime in which the force acting on the solid cylinders is close to steady is present. Interestingly, an energetic low frequency corresponding to a Strouhal number defined with the diameter of the porous cylinder of approximately 0.2 is present within the porous cylinder and near-wake regions not only for cases where wake billows are generated but also for cases where no wake billows form. In the latter cases, this frequency is due to an instability acting on the SSLs which induces in-phase large-scale undulatory deformations of the two SSLs. A combined drag parameter for the porous cylinder ${\it\Gamma}_{D}=\overline{C}_{d}\,aD/(1-\text{SVF})$ is introduced, where $aD$ is the non-dimensional frontal area per unit volume of the porous cylinder. This parameter characterizes by how much the velocity of the bleeding flow at the back of the porous cylinder is reduced compared with the incoming flow velocity for a given total drag force acting on the porous cylinder. Results from simulations conducted with different values of the SVF, $d/D$ and mean time-averaged solid cylinder streamwise drag parameter, $\overline{C}_{d}$, show that ${\it\Gamma}_{D}$ increases monotonically with increasing $aD$. Several ways of defining the spatial extent of the wake region in a less ambiguous way are proposed.

Исследование направлено на разработку и апробацию методики численного моделирования аэродинамических и энергетических характеристик циклоидального ротора. За основу взята конфигурация ротора IAT21 L3. Для нее с использованием CFD-пакета ANSYS Fluent построена математическая модель и выполнен расчет. Проанализировано влияние скорости набегающего потока воздуха на движущийся ротор. Математическая модель и полученные результаты исследования могут быть использованы при создании летательных аппаратов с движителями роторного типа. This article addresses the study of the aerodynamic and energy characteristics of a cycloidal rotor subject to the influence of the incoming flow. Cycloidal rotor is one of the perspective devices that provide movement of aircrafts. Despite the fact that the concept of a cycloidal rotor arose in the early twentieth century, the model of a full-scale aircraft has not been yet realized. Foreign scientists have developed models of aircraft ranging in weight from 0.06 to 100 kg. The method of numerical calculation of the cycloidal rotor from the article [1] is considered and realized in this study. The purpose of study was the development and testing of a numerical simulation method for the cycloidal rotor and study aerodynamic and energy characteristics of the rotor in the hovering mode and under the influence of the oncoming flow. The aerodynamic and energy characteristics of the cycloidal rotor, rotating at a speed of 1000 rpm with incoming flow on it with velocities of 20-80 km/h, were calculated. The calculation results showed a directly proportional increase of thrust with an increase of the incoming on the rotor flow velocity, but the power consumed by the rotor was also increased. Increase of the incoming flow velocity leads to the proportional increasing of the lift coefficient and the coefficient of drag. Up to a speed of 80 km/h, an increase in thrust and power is observed; at higher speeds, there is a predominance of nonstationary effects and difficulties in estimating the aerodynamic characteristics of the rotor. In the future, it is planned to consider the 3D formulation of the problem combined with possibility of the flow coming from other sides.

In this paper, we have used a three-dimensional numerical magnetohydrodynamics model to study the reconnection process between magnetic cloud and heliospheric current sheet. Within a steady-state heliospheric model that gives a reasonable large-scale structure of the solar wind near solar minimum, we injected a spherical plasmoid to mimic a magnetic cloud. When the magnetic cloud moves to the heliospheric current sheet, the dynamic process causes the current sheet to become gradually thinner and the magnetic reconnection begin. The numerical simulation can reproduce the basic characteristics of the magnetic reconnection, such as the correlated/anticorrelated signatures in V and B passing a reconnection exhaust. Depending on the initial magnetic helicity of the cloud, magnetic reconnection occurs at points along the boundary of the two systems where antiparallel field lines are forced together. We find the magnetic filed and velocity in the MC have a effect on the reconnection rate, and the magnitude of velocity can also effect the beginning time of reconnection. These results are helpful in understanding and identifying the dynamic process occurring between the magnetic cloud and the heliospheric current sheet.

Abstract A numerical study of rib augmented cooling of turbine blades is reported in this paper. The time-dependent velocity field around a pair of symmetrically placed ribs on the walls of a three-dimensional rectangular channel was studied by use of a modified version of Marker-And-Cell algorithm to solve the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The flow structures are presented with the help of instantaneous velocity vector and vorticity fields, FFT and time averaged and rms values of components of velocity. The spanwise averaged Nusselt number is found to increase at the locations of reattachment. The numerical results are compared with available numerical and experimental results. The presence of ribs leads to complex flow fields with regions of flow separation before and after the ribs. Each interruption in the flow field due to the surface mounted rib enables the velocity distribution to be more homogeneous and a new boundary layer starts developing downstream of the rib. The heat transfer is primarily enhanced due to the decrease in the thermal resistance owing to the thinner boundary layers on the interrupted surfaces. Another reason for heat transfer enhancement can be attributed to the mixing induced by large-scale structures present downstream of the separation point.

During the last few decades, the size and weight of turbo-machinery have been continuously reduced. However, by decreasing the distance between rows, rotor-stator interaction is strengthened. Two interactions now have the same magnitude: wake interaction and potential effect. Studying this effect is essential to understand rotor-stator interactions. Indeed, this phenomenon influences the whole flow, including the boundary layer of the upstream and downstream blades, ergo the stability of the flow and the efficiency of the machine. A large scale turbine cascade followed by a specially designed rotating cylinder system is used. Synchronised velocity LDA measurements on the vane profile show the flow and boundary layer behavior due to the moving bars. To help the general understanding and to corroborate our experimental results, numerical investigations are carried out with an unsteady three dimensional Navier-Stokes code. Moreover, the numerical study informs about the potential disturbance to the whole flow of the cascade.

Results are presented from a numerical study examining the flow of a viscous, incompressible fluid through random packing of nonoverlapping spheres at moderate Reynolds numbers (based on pore permeability and interstitial fluid velocity), spanning a wide range of flow conditions for porous media. By using a laminar model including inertial terms and assuming rough walls, numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in three-dimensional porous packed beds resulted in dimensionless pressure drops in excellent agreement with those reported in a previous study (Fand et al., 1987). This observation suggests that no transition to turbulence could occur in the range of Reynolds number studied. For flows in the Forchheimer regime, numerical results are presented of the lateral dispersivity of solute continuously injected into a three-dimensional bounded granular bed at moderate Peclet numbers. Lateral fluid dispersion coefficients are calculated by comparing the concentration profiles obtained from numerical and analytical methods. Comparing the present numerical results with data available in the literature, no evidence has been found to support the speculations by others for a transition from laminar to turbulent regimes in porous media at a critical Reynolds number.

The flow associated with a synthetic jet transitioning to turbulence in an otherwise quiescent external flow is examined using time-accurate three-dimensional numerical simulations. The incompressible Navier–Stokes solver uses a second-order accurate scheme for spatial discretization and a second-order semi-implicit fractional step method for time integration. The simulations are designed to model the experiments of C. S. Yao et al. (Proc. NASA LaRC Workshop, 2004) which have examined, in detail, the external evolution of a transitional synthetic jet in quiescent flow. Although the jet Reynolds and Stokes numbers in the simulations match with the experiment, a number of simplifications have been made in the synthetic jet actuator model adopted in the current simulations. These include a simpler representation of the cavity and slot geometry and diaphragm placement. Despite this, a reasonably good match with the experiments is obtained in the core of the jet and this indicates that for these jets, matching of these key non-dimensional parameters is sufficient to capture the critical features of the external jet flow. The computed results are analysed further to gain insight into the dynamics of the external as well as internal flow. The results indicate that near the jet exit plane, the flow field is dominated by the formation of counter-rotating spanwise vortex pairs that break down owing to the rapid growth of spanwise instabilities and transition to turbulence a short distance from the slot. Detailed analyses of the unsteady characteristics of the flow inside the jet cavity and slot provide insights that to date have not been available from experiments.

Gasification converts the carbon-containing material into a synthesis gas (syngas) which can be used as a fuel to generate electricity or used as a basic chemical building block for a large number of uses in the petrochemical and refining industries. Based on the mode of conveyance of the fuel and the gasifying medium, gasification can be classified into fixed or moving bed, fluidized bed, and entrained flow reactors. Entrained flow gasifiers normally feature dilute flow with small particle size and can be successfully modeled with the Discrete Phase Method (DPM). For the other types, the Eulerian-Eulerian (E-E) or the so called two-fluid multiphase model is a more appropriate approach. The E-E model treats the solid phase as a distinct interpenetrating granular “fluid” and it is the most general-purposed multi-fluid model. This approach provides transient, three-dimensional, detailed information inside the reactor which would otherwise be unobtainable through experiments due to the large scale, high pressure and/or temperature. In this paper, a transient, three-dimensional model of the Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF) transport gasifier will be presented to illustrate how Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be used for large-scale complicated geometry with detailed physics and chemistry. In the model, eleven species are included in the gas phase while four pseudo-species are assumed in the solid phase. A total of sixteen reactions, both homogeneous (involving only gas phase species) and heterogeneous (involving species in both gas and solid phases), are used to model the coal gasification chemistry. Computational results have been validated against PSDF experimental data from lignite to bituminous coals under both air and oxygen blown conditions. The PSDF gasifier geometry was meshed with about 70,000, hexahedra-dominated cells. A total of six cases with different coal, feed gas, and/or operation conditions have been performed. The predicted and measured temperature profiles along the gasifier and gas compositions at the outlet agreed fairly well.

Large eddy simulation (LES) is employed in this paper to model the axial flow along a circular array of rods with a focus on anisotropic large-scale turbulence. The circular array consists of four whole rods and eight half rods, with a pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.08. A dynamic Smagorinsky model with SIMPLE coupling method and a bounded central difference scheme are used to reduce numerical errors. The high demands for computations of the three-dimensional turbulent flows are afforded through parallel processing and utilization of 20 processors. The numerical results obtained using LES are compared with independent experimental data available in the literature; good agreement is achieved. The LES model was developed to accurately predict (i) the dependence of turbulence intensity and dominant frequency on the gap size and (ii) the turbulence structure in different directions.

High-resolution numerical simulations (with up to 2563 modes) are performed for three-dimensional flow driven by the large-scale constant force fy = F cos(x) in a periodic box of size L = 2π (Kolmogorov flow). High Reynolds number is attained by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with hyperviscosity (-1)h+1Δh (h = 8). It is shown that the mean velocity profile of Kolmogorov flow is nearly independent of Reynolds number and has the ‘laminar’ form vy = V cos(x) with a nearly constant eddy viscosity. Nevertheless, the flow is highly turbulent and intermittent even at large scales. The turbulent intensities, energy dissipation rate and various terms in the energy balance equation have the simple coordinate dependence a + b cos(2x) (with a, b constants). This makes Kolmogorov flow a good model to explore the applicability of turbulence transport approximations in open time-dependent flows. It turns out that the standard expression for effective (eddy) viscosity used in K-[Escr ] transport models overpredicts the effective viscosity in regions of high shear rate and should be modified to account for the non-equilibrium character of the flow. Also at large scales the flow is anisotropic but for large Reynolds number the flow is isotropic at small scales. The important problem of local isotropy is systematically studied by measuring longitudinal and transverse components of the energy spectra and crosscorrelation spectra of velocities and velocity-pressure-gradient spectra. Cross-spectra which should vanish in the case of isotropic turbulence decay only algebraically but somewhat faster than corresponding isotropic correlations. It is verified that the pressure plays a crucial role in making the flow locally isotropic. It is demonstrated that anisotropic large-scale flow may be considered locally isotropic at scales which are approximately ten times smaller than the scale of the flow.

Abstract A numerical study using the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5) was performed to assess the impact of initial and boundary conditions, the parameterization of turbulence transfer and its coupling with cloud-driven radiation, and cloud microphysical processes on the accuracy of mesoscale predictions and forecasts of the cloud-capped marine boundary layer. Aircraft, buoy, and satellite data and the large eddy simulation (LES) results during the Dynamics and Chemistry of Marine Stratocumulus field experiment (DYCOMS II) in July 2001 were used in the assessment. Three of the tested input fields (Eta, NCEP, and ECMWF) show deficiencies, mainly in the thermodynamic structure of the lowest 1500 m of the marine atmosphere. On a positive note, the simulated marine-layer depth showed good agreement with aircraft observations using the Eta fields, while using the NCEP and ECMWF datasets underestimated the marine-layer depth by about 20%–30%. The predicted turbulence kinetic energy (inversion strength) was about 50% of that obtained from the LES results (aircraft observed). As a consequence of moisture overprediction, the predicted liquid water path was twice the observed by 1–2 g kg−1. The sensitivity tests have shown that the selections of turbulence and cloud microphysical schemes significantly influence the turbulence estimates and cloud parameters. Two of the tested turbulence schemes (Eta PBL and Burk–Thompson) did not exhibit the coupling with radiation. The significant differences in the simulated turbulence estimates appear to be a consequence of the use of water-conserving potential temperature variables. The microphysical parameterization, which uses the number concentration of cloud drops in the autoconversion process, simulates a realistic evolution of precipitable hydrometeors in the cloudy marine layer on the positive side, but on the other hand enhances the decoupling in the turbulence structure. This study can provide guidance to operational forecasters concerning accuracy issues of the commonly used large-scale analyses for model initialization, and optimal selection of model parameterizations in order to simulate and forecast the cloudy atmospheric boundary layer over the ocean.
