AbstractThe changes in a turbulent channel flow subjected to sinusoidal oscillations of wall flush-mounted rigid discs are studied by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). The Reynolds number is ${Re}_{\tau }=180$, based on the friction velocity of the stationary-wall case and the half-channel height. The primary effect of the wall forcing is the sustained reduction of wall-shear stress, which reaches a maximum of 20 %. A parametric study on the disc diameter, maximum tip velocity, and oscillation period is presented, with the aim of identifying the optimal parameters which guarantee maximum drag reduction and maximum net energy saving, the latter computed by taking into account the power spent to actuate the discs. This may be positive and reaches 6 %. The Rosenblat viscous pump flow, namely the laminar flow induced by sinusoidal in-plane oscillations of an infinite disc beneath a quiescent fluid, is used to predict accurately the power spent for disc motion in the fully developed turbulent channel flow case and to estimate localized and transient regions over the disc surface subjected to the turbulent regenerative braking effect, for which the wall turbulence exerts work on the discs. The Fukagata–Iwamoto–Kasagi identity is employed effectively to show that the wall-friction reduction is due to two distinguished effects. One effect is linked to the direct shearing action of the near-wall oscillating-disc boundary layer on the wall turbulence, which causes the attenuation of the turbulent Reynolds stresses. The other effect is due to the additional disc-flow Reynolds stresses produced by the streamwise-elongated structures which form between discs and modulate slowly in time. The contribution to drag reduction due to turbulent Reynolds stress attenuation depends on the penetration thickness of the disc-flow boundary layer, while the contribution due to the elongated structures scales linearly with a simple function of the maximum tip velocity and oscillation period for the largest disc diameter tested, a result suggested by the Rosenblat flow solution. A brief discussion on the future applicability of the oscillating-disc technique is also presented.

We perform direct numerical simulations of an unstably stratified turbulent channel flow to address the effects of buoyancy on the boundary layer dynamics and mean field quantities. We systematically span a range of parameters in the space of friction Reynolds number ($\mathit{Re}_{{\it\tau}}$) and Rayleigh number ($\mathit{Ra}$). Our focus is on deviations from the logarithmic law of the wall due to buoyant motion. The effects of convection in the relevant ranges are discussed, providing measurements of mean profiles of velocity, temperature and Reynolds stresses as well as of the friction coefficient. A phenomenological model is proposed and shown to capture the observed deviations of the velocity profile in the log-law region from the non-convective case.

Investigation of the drag reduction phenomenon has been carried out for several years. Several techniques to reduce the drag have been applied and researched for a number of years. Microbubbles injection within a turbulent boundary layer is one method utilized to achieve reduction of drag. In this work, the effects of the presence of microbubbles in the boundary layer of a turbulent channel flow are discussed.

In the present study, the drag-reducing effect of sprayed superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) is determined for two external turbulent boundary layer (TBL) flows. We infer the modification of skin friction created beneath TBLs using near-wall laser Doppler velocity measurements for a series of tailored SHSs. Measurements of the near-wall Reynolds stresses were used to infer reduction in skin friction between 8% and 36% in the channel flow. The best candidate SHS was then selected for application on a towed submersible body with a SUBOFF profile. The SHS was applied to roughly 60% of the model surface over the parallel midbody of the model. The measurements of the towed resistance showed an average decrease in the overall resistance from 2% to 12% depending on the speed and depth of the towed model, which suggests a SHS friction drag reduction of 4-24% with the application of the SHS on the model. The towed model results are consistent with the expected drag reduction inferred from the measurements of a near-zero pressure gradient TBL channel flow.

It is known that local skin friction can be reduced by injecting microbubbles into a trubulent boundary layer. However, so far the mechanism of the reduction has never been understood. In the present study, the objective is to understand the characteristics of a turbulent flow field containing microbubbles with an experimental approach in order that the mechanism for the skin friction reduction is clearly elucidated. In order to measure the flow with the microbubbles, a combination of PIV and LIF methods is developed. Measurements are carried out for a horizontal channel flow with microbubbles by which the skin friction is reduced. Modifications of the wall turbulence due to the injection of the microbubbles are discussed.

A numerical investigation of two locally applied drag-reducing control schemes is carried out in the configuration of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL). One control is designed to damp near-wall turbulence and the other induces constant mass flux in the wall-normal direction. Both control schemes yield similar local drag reduction rates within the control region. However, the flow development downstream of the control significantly differs: persistent drag reduction is found for the uniform blowing case, whereas drag increase is found for the turbulence damping case. In order to account for this difference, the formulation of a global drag reduction rate is suggested. It represents the reduction of the streamwise force exerted by the fluid on a plate of finite length. Furthermore, it is shown that the far-downstream development of the TBL after the control region can be described by a single quantity, namely a streamwise shift of the uncontrolled boundary layer, i.e. a changed virtual origin. Based on this result, a simple model is developed that allows the local drag reduction rate to be related to the global one without the need to conduct expensive simulations or measurements far downstream of the control region.

The effect of the variations of the permeability tensor on the close-to-the-wall behaviour of a turbulent channel flow bounded by porous walls is explored using a set of direct numerical simulations. It is found that the total drag can be either reduced or increased by more than 20 % by adjusting the permeability directional properties. Drag reduction is achieved for the case of materials with permeability in the vertical direction lower than the one in the wall-parallel planes. This configuration limits the wall-normal velocity at the interface while promoting an increase of the tangential slip velocity leading to an almost ‘one-component’ turbulence where the low- and high-speed streak coherence is strongly enhanced. On the other hand, strong drag increase is found when high wall-normal and low wall-parallel permeabilities are prescribed. In this condition, the enhancement of the wall-normal fluctuations due to the reduced wall-blocking effect triggers the onset of structures which are strongly correlated in the spanwise direction, a phenomenon observed by other authors in flows over isotropic porous layers or over ribletted walls with large protrusion heights. The use of anisotropic porous walls for drag reduction is particularly attractive since equal gains can be achieved at different Reynolds numbers by rescaling the magnitude of the permeability only.

We study the evolution of velocity fluctuations due to an isolated spatio-temporal impulse using the linearized Navier–Stokes equations. The impulse is introduced as an external body force in incompressible channel flow at $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}=10\,000$. Velocity fluctuations are defined about the turbulent mean velocity profile. A turbulent eddy viscosity is added to the equations to fix the mean velocity as an exact solution, which also serves to model the dissipative effects of the background turbulence on large-scale fluctuations. An impulsive body force produces flow fields that evolve into coherent structures containing long streamwise velocity streaks that are flanked by quasi-streamwise vortices; some of these impulses produce hairpin vortices. As these vortex–streak structures evolve, they grow in size to be nominally self-similar geometrically with an aspect ratio (streamwise to wall-normal) of approximately 10, while their kinetic energy density decays monotonically. The topology of the vortex–streak structures is not sensitive to the location of the impulse, but is dependent on the direction of the impulsive body force. All of these vortex–streak structures are attached to the wall, and their Reynolds stresses collapse when scaled by distance from the wall, consistent with Townsend’s attached-eddy hypothesis.
