Disruption of the bottom log layer in large-eddy simulations of full-depth Langmuir circulation

AbstractWe report on disruption of the log layer in the resolved bottom boundary layer in large-eddy simulations (LES) of full-depth Langmuir circulation (LC) in a wind-driven shear current in neutrally-stratified shallow water. LC consists of parallel counter-rotating vortices that are aligned roughly in the direction of the wind and are generated by the interaction of the wind-driven shear with the Stokes drift velocity induced by surface gravity waves. The disruption is analysed in terms of mean velocity, budgets of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and budgets of TKE components. For example, in terms of mean velocity, the mixing due to LC induces a large wake region eroding the classical log-law profile within the range $90\lt { x}_{3}^{+ } \lt 200$. The dependence of this disruption on wind and wave forcing conditions is investigated. Results indicate that the amount of disruption is primarily determined by the wavelength of the surface waves generating LC. These results have important implications for turbulence parameterizations for Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations of the coastal ocean.

The use of implantable pumps for cardiac support (Ventricular Assist Devices) has proven to be a promising option for the treatment of advanced heart failure. Avoiding blood damage and achieving high efficiencies represent two main challenges in the optimization process. To improve VADs, it is important to understand the turbulent flow field in depth in order to minimize losses and blood damage. The application of the Large-eddy simulation (LES) is an appropriate approach to simulate the flow field because turbulent structures and flow patterns, which are connected to losses and blood damage, are directly resolved. The focus of this paper is the comparison between an LES and an Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (URANS) because the latter one is the most frequently used approach for simulating the flow in VADs. Integral quantities like pressure head and efficiency are in a good agreement between both methods. Additionally, the mean velocity fields show similar tendencies. However, LES and URANS show different results for the turbulent kinetic energy. Deviations of several tens of percent can be also observed for a blood damage parameter, which depend on velocity gradients. Possible reasons for the deviations will be investigated in future works.

The paper reports on the prediction of the turbulent flow field around a three-dimensional, surface mounted, square-sectioned cylinder at Reynolds numbers in the range 104–105. The effects of turbulence are accounted for in two different ways: by performing large-eddy simulations (LES) with a Smagorinsky model for the subgrid-scale motions and by solving the unsteady form of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (URANS) together with a turbulence model to determine the resulting Reynolds stresses. The turbulence model used is a two-equation, eddy-viscosity closure that incorporates a term designed to account for the interactions between the organized mean-flow periodicity and the random turbulent motions. Comparisons with experimental data show that the two approaches yield results that are generally comparable and in good accord with the experimental data. The main conclusion of this work is that the URANS approach, which is considerably less demanding in terms of computer resources than LES, can reliably be used for the prediction of unsteady separated flows provided that the effects of organized mean-flow unsteadiness on the turbulence are properly accounted for in the turbulence model.

Abstract Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results are presented for synthetic turbulence generation by a proposed statistically targeted forcing (STF) method. The new method seeks to introduce a fluctuating velocity field with a distribution of first and second moments that match a user-specified target mean velocity and Reynolds stress tensor, by incorporating deterministic time-dependent forcing terms into the momentum equation for the resolved flow. The STF method is formulated to extend the applicability of previously documented methods and provide flexibility in regions where synthetic turbulence needs to be generated or damped, for use in engineering level large-eddy and hybrid large-eddy/Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes CFD simulations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the proposed STF method in LES simulations of isotropic and anisotropic homogeneous turbulent flow test cases. Results are interrogated and compared to target statistical velocity and turbulent stress distributions and evaluated in terms of energy spectra. Analysis of the influence of STF model parameters, mesh resolution, and LES subgrid stress model on the results is investigated. Results show that the new method can successfully reproduce desired statistical distributions in a homogeneous turbulent flow.

In this paper we present mean velocity distributions measured in several different wave flumes. The flows shown involve different types of mechanical wavemakers, channels of differing sizes, and two different end conditions. In all cases, when surface waves, nominally deep-water Stokes waves, are generated, counterflowing Eulerian flows appear that act to cancel locally, i.e. not in an integral sense, the mass transport associated with the Stokes drift. No existing theory of wave–current interactions explains this behaviour, although it is symptomatic of Gerstner waves, rotational waves that are exact solutions to the Euler equations. In shallow water (kH ≈ 1), this cancellation of the Stokes drift does not hold, suggesting that interactions between wave motions and the bottom boundary layer may also come into play.

Hybrid, Implicit Large Eddy Simulations (ILES) for an idealized aero engine intake in a crosswind is performed. The ILES zone is smoothly blended to a near wall Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) zone. The flow has a region of high favourable pressure gradient (FPG) where the streamwise acceleration parameter (KS) is found to be greater than 3×10−6. This is sufficient to laminarize the boundary layer (BL). As a consequence, the turbulence in the boundary is severely suppressed and this interacts with a shock causing separation and distortion at the engine fan face. This is known to be undesirable for aero engines. The separated shear layer reenergizes turbulence and this promotes reattachment. The calculation in the RANS zone has been enhanced with a novel three-component RANS model and this is used in the hybrid RANS/ILES framework. Simulations also consider the modelling of roughness. The turbulent statistics and the engineering relevance of these are also discussed in this work. Broadly, encouraging agreement is found with measurements. Substantial accuracy improvements are found relative to standard RANS model simulations. The accuracy of the hybrid simulations is also contrasted with pure ILES and the critical need for the RANS layer shown for modest grids.


Recent advances in the mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations have produced new insight in the mathematical theory of turbulence. In particular, the study of the attractor for the Navier-Stokes equations produced the first connection between two approaches to turbulence that seemed far apart, namely the conventional approach of Kolmogorov and the dynamical systems theory approach. Similarly the study of the approximation of the attractor in connection with the newly introduced concept of approximate inertial manifolds has produced a new approach to large eddy simulations and the study of the interaction of small and large eddies in turbulent flows. Our aim in this article is to survey and describe some of the new results concerning the functional properties of the Navier-Stokes equations and to discuss their relevance to turbulence.

Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) calculations and Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) of the flow in two asymmetric three-dimensional diffusers were performed. The numerical setup was chosen to be in compliance with previous experiments. The aim of the present study is to find the least expensive method to compute reliably and accurately the impact of geometric sensitivity on the flow. RANS calculations fail to predict both the extent and location of the three-dimensional separation bubble. In contrast, LES is able to determine the amount of reverse flow and the pressure coefficient within the accuracy of experimental data.

<p>The InSight instrumentation for atmospheric science combines high frequency, high accuracy and continuity. This makes InSight a mission particularly suitable for studies of the variability in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) of Mars -- all the more since this topic is of direct interest for quake detectability given that turbulence is the main contributor to atmosphere-induced seismic signal. For the strong daytime buoyancy-driven PBL convection, InSight significantly extends the statistics of dust-devil-like convective vortices and turbulent wind gustiness, both of which are of strong interest for aeolian science. For the moderate nighttime shear-induced PBL convection, InSight enables to explore phenomena and variability left unexplored by previous in-situ measurements on Mars. In both daytime and nighttime environments, how the gravity waves and infrasound signals discovered by InSight are being guided within the PBL is also a central topic to InSight's atmospheric investigations, with the tantalizing possibility to identify possible sources for those phenomena. InSight has been operating at the surface of Mars since 18 months, thus the seasonal evolution of the many phenomena occurring in the PBL will be an emphasis of this report. Comparisons with turbulence-resolving modeling such as Large-Eddy Simulations will be also discussed.</p>
