Convective effects and the role of quadrupole sources for aerofoil aeroacoustics

AbstractThe present investigation of aerofoil self-noise generation and propagation concerns the effects of mean flow and quadrupole sources on the broadband noise that arises from the interaction of turbulent boundary layers with the aerofoil trailing edge and the tonal noise that arises from vortex shedding generated by laminar boundary layers and trailing-edge bluntness. Compressible large-eddy simulations (LES) are conducted for a NACA0012 aerofoil with rounded trailing edge for four flow configurations with different angles of incidence, boundary layer tripping configurations and free-stream Mach numbers. The Reynolds number based on the aerofoil chord is fixed at ${\mathit{Re}}_{c} = 408\hspace{0.167em} 000$. The acoustic predictions are performed by the Ffowcs Williams & Hawkings (FWH) acoustic analogy formulation and incorporate convective effects. Surface and volume integrations of dipole and quadrupole source terms appearing in the FWH equation are performed using a three-dimensional wideband multi-level adaptive fast multipole method (FMM) in order to accelerate the calculations of aeroacoustic integrals. In order to validate the numerical solutions, flow simulation and acoustic prediction results are compared to experimental data available in the literature and good agreement is observed in terms of both aerodynamic and aeroacoustic results. For low-Mach-number flows, quadrupole sources can be neglected in the FWH equation and mean flow effects appear only for high frequencies. However, for higher speeds, convection effects are relevant for all frequencies and quadrupole sources have a more pronounced effect for medium and high frequencies. The convective effects are most readily observed in the upstream direction.

Numerical solutions of a turbulent jet flow are used to provide velocity information throughout a simple cold turbulent propane jet at a Reynolds number of 68,000. Predictions provided by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations, based on a Reynolds stress turbulence model, are compared with experimental data available in the literature. The effect of the modelled inlet boundary conditions on the predicted flow field is described, and the discrepancy between the simulation results and experiment measurements is found to be less than the corresponding variations due to uncertainness in the experimental boundary conditions. In addition, these solutions are used as the basis for noise predictions for the jet based on Lighthill’s theory using the Goldstein broadband noise source formalization that postulates axisymmetric turbulence superposed on the mean flow. The latter model provides an aeroacoustic tool that is reasonable in identifying components or surfaces that generate significant amounts of noise, thereby providing opportunities for early design changes to aircraft and gas turbine components.

The capability of three different perturbation approaches to tackle airframe noise problems is studied. The three approaches represent different levels of complexity and are applied to trailing edge noise problems. In the Euler-perturbation approach the linearized Euler equations without sources are used as governing acoustic equations. The sound generation and propagation is studied for several trailing edge shapes (blunt, sharp, and round trailing edges) by injecting upstream of the trailing edge test vortices into the mean-flow field. The efficiency to generate noise is determined for the trailing edge shapes by comparing the different generated sound intensities due to an initial standard vortex. Mach number scaling laws are determined varying the mean-flow Mach number. In the second simulation approach an extended acoustic analogy based on acoustic perturbation equations (APEs) is applied to simulate trailing edge noise of a flat plate. The acoustic source terms are computed from a synthetic turbulent velocity model. Furthermore, the far field is computed via additional Kirchhoff extrapolation. In the third approach the sources of the extended acoustic analogy are computed from a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the compressible flow problem. The directivities due to a modeled and a LES based source, respectively, compare qualitatively well in the near field. In the far field the asymptotic directivities from the Kirchhoff extrapolation agree very well with the analytical solution of Howe. Furthermore, the sound pressure spectra can be shown to have similar shape and magnitude for the last two approaches.

This paper presents an assessment of machine-learned turbulence closures, trained for improving wake-mixing prediction, in the context of LPT flows. To this end, a three-dimensional cascade of industrial relevance, representative of modern LPT bladings, was analyzed, using a state-of-the-art RANS approach, over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. To ensure that the wake originates from correctly reproduced blade boundary-layers, preliminary analyses were carried out to check for the impact of transition closures, and the best-performing numerical setup was identified. Two different machine-learned closures were considered. They were applied in a prescribed region downstream of the blade trailing edge, excluding the endwall boundary layers. A sensitivity analysis to the distance from the trailing edge at which they are activated is presented in order to assess their applicability to the whole wake affected portion of the computational domain and outside the training region. It is shown how the best-performing closure can provide results in very good agreement with the experimental data in terms of wake loss profiles, with substantial improvements relative to traditional turbulence models. The discussed analysis also provides guidelines for defining an automated zonal application of turbulence closures trained for wake-mixing predictions.

Acoustic analogy methods are used as post-processing tools to predict aerodynamically generated sound from numerical solutions of unsteady flow. The Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW–H) equation and related formulations, such as Farassat’s Formulations 1 and 1A, are among the commonly used analogies because of their relative low computation cost and their robustness. These formulations assume the propagation of sound waves in a medium at rest. The present paper describes a surface integral formulation based on the convective wave equation, which takes into account the presence of a mean flow. The formulation was derived to be easy to implement as a numerical post-processing tool for computational fluid dynamics codes. The new formulation constitutes one possible extension of Farassat’s Formulation 1 and 1A based on the convective form of the FW–H equation.

Turbulent flow between a rotating and a stationary disk is studied. Besides its fundamental importance as a three-dimensional prototype flow, such flow fields are frequently encountered in rotor–stator configurations in turbomachinery applications. A direct numerical simulation is therefore performed by integrating the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations until a statistically steady state is reached and with the aim of providing both long-time statistics and an exposition of coherent structures obtained by conditional sampling. The simulated flow has local Reynolds number r2ω/v = 4 × 105 and local gap ratio s/r = 0.02, where ω is the angular velocity of the rotating disk, r the radial distance from the axis of rotation, v the kinematic viscosity of the fluid, and s the gap width.The three components of the mean velocity vector and the six independent Reynolds stresses are compared with experimental measurements in a rotor–stator flow configuration. In the numerically generated flow field, the structural parameter a1 (i.e. the ratio of the magnitude of the shear stress vector to twice the mean turbulent kinetic energy) is lower near the two disks than in two-dimensional boundary layers. This characteristic feature is typical for three-dimensional boundary layers, and so are the misalignment between the shear stress vector and the mean velocity gradient vector, although the degree of misalignment turns out to be smaller in the present flow than in unsteady three-dimensional boundary layer flow. It is also observed that the wall friction at the rotating disk is substantially higher than at the stationary disk.Coherent structures near the disks are identified by means of the λ2 vortex criterion in order to provide sufficient information to resolve a controversy regarding the roles played by sweeps and ejections in shear stress production. An ensemble average of the detected structures reveals that the coherent structures in the rotor–stator flow are similar to the ones found in two-dimensional flows. It is shown, however, that the three-dimensionality of the mean flow reduces the inter-vortical alignment and the tendency of structures of opposite sense of rotation to overlap. The coherent structures near the disks generate weaker sweeps (i.e. quadrant 4 events) than structures in conventional two-dimensional boundary layers. This reduction in the quadrant 4 contribution from the coherent structures is believed to explain the reduced efficiency of the mean flow in producing Reynolds shear stress.

A frequency domain linearized unsteady aerodynamic analysis is presented for three-dimensional unsteady vortical flows around a cascade of loaded airfoils. The analysis fully accounts for the distortion of the impinging vortical disturbances by the mean flow. The entire unsteady flow field is calculated in response to upstream three-dimensional harmonic disturbances. Numerical results are presented for two standard cascade configurations representing turbine and compressor bladings for a reduced frequency range from 0.1 to 5. Results show that the upstream gust conditions and blade sweep strongly affect the unsteady blade response.

Magnetic resonance imaging experiments have provided the three-dimensional mean concentration and three component mean velocity field for a typical trailing edge film-cooling cutback geometry built into a conventional uncambered airfoil. This geometry is typical of modern aircraft engines and includes three dimensional slot jets separated by tapered lands. Previous analysis of these data identified the critical mean flow structures that contribute to rapid mixing and low effectiveness in the fully turbulent flow. Three new trailing edge geometries were designed to modify the large scale mean flow structures responsible for surface effectiveness degradation. One modification called the Dolphin Nose attempted to weaken strong vortex flows by reducing three dimensionality near the slot breakout. This design changed the flow structure but resulted in minimal improvement in the surface effectiveness. Two other designs called the Shield and Rounded Shield changed the land planform and added an overhanging land edge while maintaining the same breakout surface. These designs substantially modified the vortex structure and improved the surface effectiveness by as much as 30%. Improvements included superior coolant uniformity on the breakout surface which reduces potential thermal stresses. The utilization of the time averaged data from combined magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) and concentration (MRC) experiments for designing improved trailing edge breakout film cooling is demonstrated.

Wind turbine noise is a critical issue for siting and its operation in offshore and terrestrial conditions. In this work, we analysed trailing edge bluntness vortex shedding noise source for a land based turbine of size 2MW and blade span of 38m using modified BPM noise solver. A regression approach has been implemented to predict the shape function in terms of thickness to chord ratio of aerofoils used for blade. For trailing edge height of 1 % chord, computations for sound power level were done at wind speed of 8m/s, 17 RPM, and showed that present regression approach predicts the noise peak of 78dBA at f ~ 10 kHz. These results were also validated using experiment data from GE 1.5sle, Siemens 2.3MW turbines with blade lengths of 78 -101m and agreed within 2 % at very high frequencies, f > 5kHz. In addition, results from present approach agreed with original BPM and modified BPM by Wei et al at high frequencies, f ~ 10kHz where the bluntness noise becomes predominant. The slope of noise curves from present approach, and modified BPM methods are lower when compared with original BPM and show sound level coincidence with peak Strouhal number of ~ 3.3.


This paper considers nonlinear interactions in the three-dimensional stage of transition to turbulence, taking an accelerating boundary layer as a prototype flow. Attention is focused on transition via subharmonic resonance in the upper-branch scaling régime. It is shown that the (weakly) nonlinear instability of the flow is described by a seven-zoned structure, cf. the five-zoned structure for the linear problem. The dominant nonlinear interactions take place both in a critical layer and in ‘diffusion layers’. The nonlinearly generated mean flow in turn interacts with the wall to attain a maximum magnitude near the wall. It is emphasized that both the nonlinear mechanism and the flow structure are generic for three-dimensional disturbances. And there is some similarity with the work in the context of wave/vortex interaction. Numerical solutions of the amplitude equations indicate that if the oblique modes initially have a small amplitude, they first experience a rapid growth caused by parametric resonance. Following this the cubic interactions of the oblique modes inhibit the growth and lead to a wavelength shortening. However, if the initial amplitudes of the oblique modes are sufficiently large, the parametric resonance can be completely bypassed. Numerical solutions also suggest that oblique modes with unequal initial amplitudes evolve to an equal-amplitude state.
