A direct numerical simulation study of turbulence and flame structure in transverse jets analysed in jet-trajectory based coordinates

AbstractAn${\mathrm{H} }_{2} / {\mathrm{N} }_{2} $jet in cross-flow (JICF) of air is studied using three-dimensional direct numerical simulation with and without chemical reaction in order to investigate the role of the complex JICF turbulent flow field in the mechanism of fast fuel-oxidant mixing and of aerodynamic flame stabilization in the near field of the jet nozzle. Focus is on delineating the flow/mixing/chemistry conditions that are necessary and/or sufficient to achieve flame anchoring that ultimately enables the formulation of more reliable and precise guidelines for design of fuel injection nozzles. A mixture averaged diffusion formulation that includes the effect of thermal diffusion is used along with a detailed chemical kinetics mechanism for hydrogen–air combustion. A new parametrization technique is used to describe the jet trajectory: solution of Laplace’s equation upon, and then within, an opportune scalar surface anchored by Dirichlet boundary conditions at the jet nozzle and plume exit from the domain provides a smoothly varying field along the jet path. The surface is selected to describe the scalar mixing and reaction associated with a transverse jet. The derived field,$j(\mathbi{x})$, is used as a condition to mark the position along the natural jet trajectory when analysing the variation of relevant flow, mixing and reaction quantities in the present direct numerical simulation (DNS) datasets. Results indicate the presence of a correlation between the flame base location in parameter space and a region of low velocity magnitude, high enstrophy, high mixing rate and high equivalence ratio (flame root region). Instantaneously, a variety of vortical structures, well known from the literature as important contributors to fuel-oxidant mixing, are observed in both inert and reactive cases with a considerable span in length scales. Moreover, instantaneous plots from reactive cases illustrate that the most upstream flame tongues propagate close to the trailing edge of the fuel jet potential core near the jet shear layer vortex shedding position. Some degree of asymmetry with respect to the domain mid-plane in the spanwise direction is observed in the averaged fields, both for the inert and reactive cases.

In this research, highly disturbed turbulent flow of distinct three-dimensional characteristics in a square duct with inclined or V-shaped ribs mounted on one wall is investigated using direct numerical simulation. The turbulence field is highly sensitive to not only the rib geometry but also the boundary layers developed over the side and top walls. In a cross-stream plane secondary flows appear as large longitudinal vortices in both inclined and V-shaped rib cases due to the confinement of four sidewalls of the square duct. However, owing to the difference in the pattern of cross-stream secondary flow motions, the flow physics is significantly different in these two ribbed duct cases. It is observed that the mean flow structures in the cross-stream directions are asymmetrical in the inclined rib case but symmetrical in the V-shaped rib case, causing substantial differences in the momentum transfer across the spanwise direction. The impacts of rib geometry on near-wall turbulence structures are investigated using vortex identifiers, joint probability density functions between the streamwise and vertical velocity fluctuations, statistical moments of different orders, spatial two-point autocorrelations and velocity spectra. It is found that near the leeward and windward rib faces, the mean inclination angle of turbulence structures in the V-shaped rib case is greater than that of the inclined rib case, which subsequently enhances momentum transport between the ribbed bottom wall and the smooth top wall.

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the near field of a three-dimensional spatially developing turbulent lifted hydrogen jet flame in heated coflow is performed with a detailed mechanism to determine the stabilization mechanism and the flame structure. The DNS was performed at a jet Reynolds number of 11,000 with over 940 million grid points. The results show that auto-ignition in a fuel-lean mixture at the flame base is the main source of stabilization of the lifted jet flame. A chemical flux analysis shows the occurrence of near-isothermal chemical chain branching preceding thermal runaway upstream of the stabilization point, indicative of hydrogen auto-ignition in the second limit. The Damköhler number and key intermediate-species behaviour near the leading edge of the lifted flame also verify that auto-ignition occurs at the flame base. At the lifted-flame base, it is found that heat release occurs predominantly through ignition in which the gradients of reactants are opposed. Downstream of the flame base, both rich-premixed and non-premixed flames develop and coexist with auto-ignition. In addition to auto-ignition, Lagrangian tracking of the flame base reveals the passage of large-scale flow structures and their correlation with the fluctuations of the flame base. In particular, the relative position of the flame base and the coherent flow structure induces a cyclic motion of the flame base in the transverse and axial directions about a mean lift-off height. This is confirmed by Lagrangian tracking of key scalars, heat release rate and velocity at the stabilization point.
