We address the power scaling issue in end-pumped laser rod amplifiers by studying, experimentally and numerically, the magnitude of thermal lensing in a high-energy diode-pumped Yb:YAG crystal. The spatio-temporal temperature profile of the gain medium and the focal length of the induced thermal lens are determined numerically. The influence of the repetition rate and pumping power on the temperature distribution is analyzed. Experimental measurements covered repetition rates between 1 and 10 Hz and up to 4 kW pumping power.

In this paper, a model to predict the thermal effects in a flashlamp-pumped direct-liquid-cooled split-disk Nd:LuAG ceramic laser amplifier has been presented. In addition to pumping distribution, the model calculates thermal-induced wavefront aberration as a function of temperature, thermal stress and thermal deformation in the gain medium. Experimental measurements are carried out to assess the accuracy of the model. We expect that this study will assist in the design and optimization of high-energy lasers operated at repetition rate.

Abstract Directly measuring thermal focal length is important for designing and optimizing the mode locking oscillator, especially for a 2-μm mode-locking laser. In this paper, we propose a novel interferometric method for measuring the thermal focal length in a 2-μm mode-locking laser. This method could give a precise measurement of the thermal focal length inside a long-folded oscillator in both lasing and non-lasing operation. We also theoretically calculate the thermal focal length based on the temperature distribution inside the laser crystal, which matches well with the experimental result

AbstractIn this paper we present a design of a compact, low power diode-pumped CW Nd:YAG laser operating at 946 nm with intracavity blue light generation at 473 nm for battery operated applications. The nonlinear crystal used in the experiment is a BiBO crystal cut for phase-matching type I. Using 0.8 W of pumping power, 20-mW stabile output power of blue light was achieved. The second harmonic generation conversion efficiency was 2.5%.
