We take the first steps towards a better understanding of continuous orbit equivalence, i.e., topological orbit equivalence with continuous cocycles. First, we characterize continuous orbit equivalence in terms of isomorphisms of$C^{\ast }$-crossed products preserving Cartan subalgebras. This is the topological analogue of the classical result by Singer and Feldman-Moore in the measurable setting. Second, we turn to continuous orbit equivalence rigidity, i.e., the question whether for certain classes of topological dynamical systems, continuous orbit equivalence implies conjugacy. We show that this is not always the case by constructing topological dynamical systems (actions of free abelian groups and also non-abelian free groups) that are continuously orbit equivalent but not conjugate. Furthermore, we prove positive rigidity results. For instance, for solvable duality groups, general topological Bernoulli actions and certain subshifts of full shifts over finite alphabets are rigid.

AbstractWe introduce the notion of tracial equivalence for $C^*$-algebras. Let $A$ and $B$ be two unital separable $C^*$-algebras. If they are tracially equivalent, then there are two sequences of asymptotically multiplicative contractive completely positive linear maps $\phi_n:A\to B$ and $\psi_n:B\to A$ with a tracial condition such that $\{\phi_n\circ\psi_n\}$ and $\{\psi_n\circ\phi_n\}$ are tracially approximately inner. Let $A$ and $B$ be two unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras with tracial topological rank zero. It is proved that $A$ and $B$ are tracially equivalent if and only if $A$ and $B$ have order isomorphic ranges of tracial states. For the Cantor minimal systems $(X_1,\sigma_1)$ and $(X_2,\sigma_2)$, using a result of Giordano, Putnam and Skau, we show that two such dynamical systems are (topological) orbit equivalent if and only if the associated crossed products $C(X_1)\times_{\sigma_1}\mathbb{Z}$ and $C(X_2)\times_{\sigma_2}\mathbb{Z}$ are tracially equivalent.

AbstractWe prove a result about extension of a minimal AF-equivalence relation R on the Cantor set X, the extension being ‘small’ in the sense that we modify R on a thin closed subset Y of X. We show that the resulting extended equivalence relation S is orbit equivalent to the original R, and so, in particular, S is affable. Even in the simplest case—when Y is a finite set—this result is highly non-trivial. The result itself—called the absorption theorem—is a powerful and crucial tool for the study of the orbit structure of minimal ℤn-actions on the Cantor set, see Remark 4.8. The absorption theorem is a significant generalization of the main theorem proved in Giordano et al [Affable equivalence relations and orbit structure of Cantor dynamical systems. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.24 (2004), 441–475] . However, we shall need a few key results from the above paper in order to prove the absorption theorem.

Let [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag–Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II1 factors forces [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] when [Formula: see text]. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum in [Baumslag–Solitar groups, relative profinite completions and measure equivalence rigidity, J. Topol. 8 (2015) 295–313].

The main result of the paper is classification of free multidimensional Borel flows up to Lebesgue orbit equivalence, by which we mean an orbit equivalence that preserves the Lebesgue measure on each orbit. Two non-smooth $\mathbb{R}^{d}$-flows are shown to be Lebesgue orbit equivalent if and only if they admit the same number of invariant ergodic probability measures.
