AbstractObjectiveThis study aimed to clarify the correlation between the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and domestic violence (DV) against pregnant females after the disaster in Miyagi Prefecture, an area damaged by the earthquake and tsunami.MethodsWe analyzed 7600 pregnant females from June to December 2011. The incidence of physical and mental DV and the proportions in the inland, north coastal, and south coastal areas of Miyagi Prefecture and nationwide were calculated, and a chi-square test was conducted for comparison. The risk factors for DV were estimated with multivariate logistic regression analyses on a prefecture-wide basis.ResultsThe incidence levels for physical DV were found to be 5.9% in the north coastal area, which was significantly higher than in the inland area (1.3%, P=0.0007) and nationwide (1.5%, P<0.0001). There were no significant differences in the incidence of mental DV between the 3 areas in Miyagi Prefecture (inland 15.2%, north coast 15.7%, and south coast 18.8%) or nationwide (13.8%). Experiencing disease or injury in someone close and changes in the family structure were significantly associated with mental DV in Miyagi Prefecture.ConclusionContinuous monitoring and support for pregnant females may be necessary to address this issue in disaster-affected areas. AbstractObjectiveWe aimed to clarify the correlation between the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and pregnant women’s awareness of social capital 3 to 9 months after the tsunami disaster.MethodsWe analyzed data on responses to a questionnaire by 7451 pregnant women in their second to third trimesters. The proportions of social capital–related items were calculated in the north and south coastal areas of Miyagi Prefecture and were compared with national samples. The factors associated with social capital were estimated by use of multivariate logistic regression analyses.ResultsThe proportion of women feeling that they had helpful neighbors was higher (69.0% vs 56.7%, P=0.0005), the proportion of women regarding their communities as safe and secure was lower (51.7% vs 62.4%, P=0.002), and the proportion of women feeling that most people were trustworthy was lower (23.7% vs 32.9%, P=0.006) in the north coastal area than nationwide. Such differences were not observed in the less severely affected south coastal area. Age of 35 years or older, extended family, college or university graduation, and being multiparous were associated with the feeling of having helpful neighbors.ConclusionThe current status of pregnant women’s awareness of social capital in disaster-affected areas was revealed. Continuous monitoring and support may be necessary to address this issue.(Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2017;11:355–364)

Abstract Objectives To know the decision maker in the family with respect to purchase of foods and to understand the influence of the decision maker on the nutritional status of family members of households with adolescents. Methods Families (n = 60) residing in urban Bangalore, India, with at least one adolescent family member (13–17 years) were selected by purposive sampling. An interviewer administered questionnaire was developed and pre-tested on ten % of the subjects and was used for collecting the data. For studying the food purchase decisions the food items were divided into 5 categories:1) Fruits and vegetables(n = 18) 2) Ready to cook or raw ingredient (n = 13) 3) ready to eat foods (n = 9), 4) dairy products (n = 6) and 5) non vegetarian foods (n = 4). Any family member who made the highest number of food purchase decisions over a period of one month was considered as the decision maker of the family. Nutritional status of family members was assessed based on their Body Mass Index (WHO, 2004). Chi square test was used to know the influence of decision maker on the nutritional status of family members. Results The results of the study show that mother is the decision maker in 61% families in case of fruits and vegetables and in 59% families in case of raw ingredients. In case of ready to eat foods it is the adolescents who are the major decision makers and in case of dairy products both mother and father together were decision makers and purchasing decisions with respect to non-vegetarian foods was dominated by fathers (51%). Overall it was found that in 52% families mother was decision maker, 19% families father was decision maker and only in 9% families adolescent family members were major food decision makers. Based on results of Chi square test the hypothesis that the decision maker has no effect on the nutritional status is accepted. Conclusions The decision maker is different for different category of foods. The decision maker and the nutritional status of family members are two independent attributes. Funding Sources It is a self financed study as part of Masters Program in Dietetics and Food Service Management from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.

Background Trichuris trichiura is one of the most commonsoil-transmitted helminths, estimated to infect l billion peopleworldwide. Several studies have compared the efficacies ofalbendazole and diethylcarbamazine, but the efficacy of acombination of these two drugs has been inconclusive. Objective To assess the effectiveness of a single dose ofalbendazole compared to a combination of albendazole anddiethylcarbamazine for trichuriasis treatment. Methods A randomized, clinical open trial was conducted fromJune to September 2009 on elementary school children withtrichuriasis from two villages in the North Sumatera Province.Stool specimens were collected at baseline and at days 7, 14,21, and 28 after treatment, and examined by the Kato Katzmethod. Subjects were randomized into two groups. Group Ireceived a single dose of albendazole (400 mg) and group IIreceived albendazole (400 mg) plus diethylcarbamazine (6 mg!kg). Statistical analyses used were Chi square test for cure ratesand Wilcoxon rank test for egg reduction rates. Results One hundred eight children were enrolled andrandomized into group l (53 children) and group II (55children). The prevalence of T. trichiura infection was 54.7%.There were no significant differences (P=0.52) in the curerate between groups I and II (66% and 60%, respectively) or inegg reduction rates at day 28 (54.5% and 60.07%, respectively,P= 0.10).Conclusion Albendazole alone and abendazole combinedwith diethylcarbamazine have similar efficacies for trichuriasistreatment, in terms of cure rates and egg reduction rates.
