PHAROS: A digital research space for photo archives

The PHAROS consortium of fourteen international art historical photo archives is digitizing the over 20 million images (with accompanying documentation) in its combined collections and has begun to construct a common access platform using Linked Open Data and the ResearchSpace software. In addition to resulting in a rich and substantial database of images for art-historical research, the PHAROS initiative supports the development of shared standards for mapping and sharing photo archive metadata, as well as for best practices for working with large digital image collections and conducting computational image analysis. Moreover, alongside their digitization efforts, PHAROS member institutions are considering the kinds of art-historical questions the resulting database of images could be used to research. This article indicates some of the prospective research directions stimulated by modern technologies, with the aim of exploring the epistemological potential of photographic archives and challenging the boundaries between the analogue and the digital.

Historical images contain a variety of signs and meanings. The latter have influenced perception and response decisively, in the past as well as today. Methods and possibilities of computer-supported image analysis in context, and particularly of digital image analysis have started to support recent research-efforts considerably. The creation and organisation of digitised historical archives seem to have become particularly important for any kind of studies of the contents and messages of pictorial sources. This creation and organisation of image archives, and the analysis of the contents of such archives mainly imply digitisation and documentation, making catalogues and codebooks available, the linking and binding of images and their details, encoding, segmentation, sub-segmentation and archiving the image segments, creating and keeping up contexts. They make comparative primary and secondary analysis possible. Fruitful co-operation and exchange of skills are necessary. The ‘culture of images’has come up to other levels; history and its images are about to reach new and very promising dimensions.

The key significant worldview of the Semantic Web is Linked Open Data, another period of the World Wide Web that capacities to carry suggestions to information. An enormous number of both public and private foundations have dis-tributed their information following the Linked Open Data philosophies, or have done as such with information from different associations. To this degree, since the generation and production of Linked Open Data are thorough designing procedures that require high consideration so as to achieve high caliber, and since experience has uncovered that current general guidance is not constantly adequate to be applied to each area, this paper presents a lot of guidance system for creating and distributing Linked Open Data with regards to ethnic groups in Thailand to outside (TEG-LOD Framework). This framework offers an exhaustive depiction of the undertakings to perform, including a rundown of steps, tools that help in accomplishing the errand, different alternatives for achievement of the assignment, and best practices and proposals. Also, this paper exhibits a pilot model on the generation and distribution of Linked Open Data about ethnic groups in Thai-land, adhering to the available guidance, where the ethnic groups in Thailand are the property of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Center (SAC) have been made and distributed as Linked Open Data.

In recent years it became apparent that we needed to improve productivity and efficiency in the Microscopy Laboratories in GE Plastics. It was realized that digital image acquisition, archiving, processing, analysis, and transmission over a network would be the best way to achieve this goal. Also, the capabilities of quantitative image analysis, image transmission etc. available with this approach would help us to increase our efficiency. Although the advantages of digital image acquisition, processing, archiving, etc. have been described and are being practiced in many SEM, laboratories, they have not been generally applied in microscopy laboratories (TEM, Optical, SEM and others) and impact on increased productivity has not been yet exploited as well.In order to attain our objective we have acquired a SEMICAPS imaging workstation for each of the GE Plastic sites in the United States. We have integrated the workstation with the microscopes and their peripherals as shown in Figure 1.

O surgimento de novas tecnologias, tem introduzido meios para a divulgação e a disponibilização das informações mais eficientemente. Uma iniciativa, chamada de Europeana, vem promovendo esta adaptação dos objetos informacionais dentro da Web, e mais especificamente no Linked Data. Desta forma, o presente estudo tem como objetivo apresentar uma discussão acerca da relação entre as Humanidades Digitais e o Linked Open Data, na figura da Europeana. Para tal, utilizamos uma metodologia exploratória e que busca explorar as questões relacionadas ao modelo de dados da Europeana, EDM, por meio do SPARQL. Como resultados, compreendemos as características do EDM, pela utilização do SPARQL.
