Grassroots innovation is an activity that uses multiple resources or indigenous technology to create an innovation more creatively. The innovations are often utilised to improvise the community and environment. The invented product or process is created at the bottom of the pyramid due to necessities, difficulties, and challenges. Malaysia thrives to become a high income developed nation through several initiatives, such as lifelong learning and innovation. Malaysians are encouraged to undertake education programmes to enhance knowledge and skills. These grassroots activities need to be discovered as they affect income and social values. The local grassroots innovators have difficulty commercialising the innovations due to a lack of skills, knowledge, and technology. This study aimed to identify the grassroots innovations, the process in developing innovation, and complement the innovation towards commercialisation. Local innovators adapt to the new product development process as a mutual understanding and for grassroots sustainable development.

The development and utilization of underground space is an effective way to solve the shortage of urban space capacity. It is also an inevitable choice for the sustainable development of urban underground space. The development and utilization of underground space in small and medium-sized cities in China started relatively late and lacked practical basis. This paper selects three representative small and medium-sized cities in east China to study the status quo, contents and achievements of underground space development and utilization, makes a comparative analysis, and puts forward the overall characteristics of underground space development and utilization in small and medium-sized cities, hoping to provide reference for the development and utilization of underground space in small and medium-sized cities in the future.

Urban underground space development and utilization of the city is an important step towards sustainable development. Gaining enough, fresh air with appropriate temperature and humidity and sufficient sunshine, reducing energy consumption and increasing environment quality are basic requirements for healthy underground space design. The paper puts forward building energy conservation design responses of urban underground space from natural lighting, ventilation and renewable energy utilization three aspects to provide the beneficial reference to sustainable development design of the urban public underground space.

Only by making intensive use of land to achieve highly compact, can a city achieve functional concentration and optimization to promote the urban sustainable development. Contemporary Situation

As a result of the popularity of ecotourism in China, the number of tourists has increased and the development scale of tourism area has expanded constantly. It will inevitably affect natural landscape and ecological balance. In order to protect the environment and maintain the sustainable development of ecotourism area, this paper argues that underground space utilization in ecotourism area is an effective method. By introducing the contemporary situation of ecological tourist area in China, it points out the necessity of underground space development. Combined with the characteristics of underground space, the advantages and disadvantages of underground space development in ecotourism area were analyzed. The main principles of underground space development in ecotourism area were discussed. From the perspective of overall planning in ecotourism area, the calculation method for underground space demand was proposed.
