Southeast Asia comprises a complex agglomeration of allochthonous terranes located at the zone of convergence between the Eurasian, Indo-Australian and Philippine Sea plates. The older continental ‘core’ comprises four principal terranes, South China, Indochina, Sibumasu and East Malaya, derived from Gondwana-Land and assembled between the Carboniferous and the late Triassic. Other terranes (Mount Victoria Land, Sikuleh, Natal, Semitau and S.W. Borneo) were added to this ‘core’ during the Jurassic and Cretaceous to form ‘Sundaland’. Eastern Southeast Asia (N. and E. Borneo, the Philippines and eastern Indonesia) comprises fragments rifted from the Australian and South China margins during the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic which, together with subduction complexes, island arcs and marginal seas, form a complex heterogeneous basement now largely covered by Cenozoic sediments. Strike-slip motions and complex rotations, due to subduction and rifting processes and the collisions of India with Eurasia and Australia with Southeast Asia, have further complicated the spatial distribution of these Southeast Asian terranes. A series of palinspastic maps showing the interpreted rift-drift-amalgamation-accretion history of Southeast Asia are presented.

Abstract Detrital zircons in late Cretaceous – Palaeogene, calcareous sandstone and conglomerate deposited in continental basins on the southeastern African margin after the breakup of Gondwana have characteristic combinations of age and epsilon-Hf that indicate an origin by recycling of Palaeoproterozoic (Waterberg, Soutpansberg and Pretoria groups) and Phanerozoic (Karoo Supergroup) cover successions. The latter is dominant in the south and east (Boane, Mahosi, Chilojo Cliffs), and the Palaeoproterozoic sources in the northwest (Pafuri, Wright’s Tower, Masisi). This recycling and mixing regime was restricted to late Mesozoic and Palaeogene time in northeastern South Africa and adjoining parts of Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Detrital zircon distribution patterns in these deposits reflect the denudation history of the southern African continental surface after breakup of the Gondwana supercontinent.

The rheological and mechanical properties of crosslinked polymer gels arise from the structure of the gel network. In turn, the structure of the gel network results from: thermodynamically determined interactions between the polymer chain segments, the interactions of the crosslinking metal ion with the polymer, and the deformation history of the network. Interpretations of mechanical and rheological measurements on polymer gels invariably begin with a conceptual model of,the microstructure of the gel network derived from polymer kinetic theory. In the present work, we use freeze-etch replication TEM to image the polymer network morphology of titanium crosslinked hydroxypropyl guars in an attempt to directly relate macroscopic phenomena with network structure.
