Network tomography has emerged as one of the lean approaches for efficient network monitoring, especially aiming at addressing the ever-increasing requirements for scaling and efficiency in modern network architectures and infrastructures. In this paper, we explore network coding and compressed sensing as enabling technologies in the context of network tomography. Both approaches capitalize on algebraic tools for achieving accuracy while allowing scaling of operation as the size of the monitored network increases. Initially, a brief overview of the tomographic problems and the related classification of methods is provided to better comprehend the problems encountered and solutions provided to date. Subsequently, we present representative approaches that employ either one of the aforementioned technologies and we comparatively describe their fundamental operation. Eventually, we provide a qualitative comparison of features and approaches that can be used for further research and technology development for network monitoring in future Internet infrastructures.

The paper considers the problem of invariance with respect to the unknown input for discrete-time nonlinear dynamic systems. To solve the problem, the algebraic approaches, called algebra of functions and logic–dynamic approach, are used. Such approaches assume that description of the system may contain non-differentiable functions. Necessary and sufficient conditions of solvability the problem are obtained. Moreover, procedures which find the appropriate functions and matrices are developed. Some applications of such invariance in fault detection and isolation, disturbance decoupling problem, and fault-tolerant control are considered.

In some of the newer programs in elementary school mathematics there is an attempt to close what has previously been quite a gap between arithmetic and algebra; to use algebra as a way of bringing adventurous thinking to the mathematics content of the grades. It may be that algebraic approaches to some of our elementary school mathematics will help children grasp generalizations and build concepts more adequately. Why? Because under the guidance of a skillful teacher they have the opportunity to try out and test variation after variation while keeping constant the basic concept which is being developed.
