The phase diagram of a quantum Hall bilayer at total filling ν = 1 contains an incompressible superfluid for small distances d between the layers, as well as the compressible phase corresponding to two uncoupled Fermi liquids for large d. Using exact diagonalization on the sphere and torus geometry, we investigate a long-standing question of the nature of the transition between the two regimes, and the possibility for the existence of a paired phase in the transition region. We find considerable evidence for a direct transition between the superfluid and the Fermi liquid phase, based in particular on the behavior of the ground state energy on the sphere (including appropriate finite-size corrections) as a function of d. At the critical distance dC ≈ 11.6ℓB the topological number ("shift") of the ground state changes, suggesting that tuning the layer separation d in experiment likely leads to a direct transition between the superfluid and the Fermi liquid phase.

AbstractThe high-pressure structural chemistry of main group elements in the metallic state is reviewed under consideration of more recent determinations of atomic arrangements with to some extend unexpected complexity. Following the concept of the pressure-coordination rule, the number of nearest neighbours is employed as a guiding quantity to reveal systematic trends. Violations of the rule will be mainly discussed in the light of electronic ground state changes upon compression.

We consider state changes in quantum theory due to “conditional action” and relate these to the discussion of entropy decrease due to interventions of “intelligent beings” and the principles of Szilard and Landauer/Bennett. The mathematical theory of conditional actions is a special case of the theory of “instruments”, which describes changes of state due to general measurements and will therefore be briefly outlined in the present paper. As a detailed example, we consider the imperfect erasure of a qubit that can also be viewed as a conditional action and will be realized by the coupling of a spin to another small spin system in its ground state.

The phenomenon of bioluminescence has fascinated layman and scientist alike for many centuries. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries a number of observations were reported on the physiology of bioluminescence in Renilla, the common sea pansy. More recently biochemists have directed their attention to the molecular basis of luminosity in this colonial form. These studies have centered primarily on defining the chemical basis for bioluminescence and its control. It is now established that bioluminescence in Renilla arises due to the luciferase-catalyzed oxidation of luciferin. This results in the creation of a product (oxyluciferin) in an electronic excited state. The transition of oxyluciferin from its excited state to the ground state leads to light emission.
