Noncausal autoregressive models with heavy-tailed errors generate locally explosive processes and, therefore, provide a convenient framework for modelling bubbles in economic and financial time series. We investigate the probability properties of mixed causal-noncausal autoregressive processes, assuming the errors follow a stable non-Gaussian distribution. Extending the study of the noncausal AR(1) model by Gouriéroux and Zakoian (2017), we show that the conditional distribution in direct time is lighter-tailed than the errors distribution, and we emphasize the presence of ARCH effects in a causal representation of the process. Under the assumption that the errors belong to the domain of attraction of a stable distribution, we show that a causal AR representation with non-i.i.d. errors can be consistently estimated by classical least-squares. We derive a portmanteau test to check the validity of the estimated AR representation and propose a method based on extreme residuals clustering to determine whether the AR generating process is causal, noncausal, or mixed. An empirical study on simulated and real data illustrates the potential usefulness of the results.

Also lim ∊–1 P(M ∊ = 0) and lim ∊–1 P(M ∊ < x) are determined. Proofs are by direct comparison of corresponding probabilities for U (∊) n and for a special family of random walks related to MI/M/1 queues, using the central limit theorem.

We consider an exponential queueing system with multiple stations, each of which has an infinite number of servers and a dedicated arrival stream of jobs. In addition, there is an arrival stream of jobs that choose a station based on the state of the system. In this paper we describe two heavy traffic approximations for the stationary joint probability mass function of the number of busy servers at each station. One of the approximations involves state-space collapse and is accurate for large traffic loads. The state-space in the second approximation does not collapse. It provides an accurate estimate of the stationary behavior of the system over a wide range of traffic loads.

Write S0= 0, Sn = Σ i=1nXi, n ≧ 1, and Mn = max0 ≦ k ≦ nSk. In the case where the Xi are such that Σ1∞n−1Pr(Sn > 0) < ∞, we have limn→∞Mn = M which is finite with probability one, while in the case where Σ1∞n−1Pr(Sn < 0) < ∞, a limit theorem for Mn has been obtained by Heyde [9]. The techniques used in [9], however, break down in the case Σ1∞n−1Pr(Sn < 0) < ∞, Σ1∞n−1Pr(Sn > 0) < ∞ (the case of oscillation of the random walk generated by the Sn) and the only results available deal with the case α = 2 (Erdos and Kac [5]) and the case where the Xi themselves have a symmetric stable distribution (Darling [4]). In this paper we obtain a general limit theorem for Mn in the case of oscillation.

In view of the non-Gaussian of ocean ambient noise, the  stable distribution is applied to the statistical modelling. Firstly, the one-to-one correspondence between the four parameters of stable distribution and the sample mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis are established according to physical meaning. Then, numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the suitability of stable distribution for non-Gaussian ambient noise. In the case of white noise interference, noise is divided into Gaussian state, leptokurtic, and platykurtic separately. The parameters of stable distribution are estimated by the sample quantile and characteristic function method jointly. The simulation results show that, in the Gaussian state,  stable distribution is equivalent to normal distribution. As for leptokurtic distribution, stable distribution is much better than normal distribution, indicating absolute predominance in impulse-like data modeling. But it is not adaptive for low kurtosis state because its characteristic exponent can’t be bigger than two. Finally, the result is verified by ambient noise collected in three environmental conditions, such as quiet ambient noise, airgun interference noise and ship noise. In all three cases,  stable distribution shows good adaptability and accuracy, especially for the airgun dataset it is far superior to normal distribution.
