Metal matrix composites (MMC's) have attracted the attention of researchers for quite some time. In the last 15 years, many studies have been reported in this field of MMC production through various routes. The most commonly used process for producing MMC is stir casting process whereby the reinforcement material is incorporated into the molten metal by stirring. It is a relatively low cost manufacturing process that is capable of producing high quality MMC. However, the process is associated with issues such as attaining uniform distribution of particles, wettability between particles and porosity in the MMCs. Because of these challenges, there has been continuous improvement in the process as well as the design of the furnace. In this research, an innovatively designed bottom tapping furnace has been used to produce the MMCs and the produced sample is characterized.

In spite of their interesting properties, nanostructured materials have found limited uses because of the cost of preparation and the limited range of materials that can be synthesized. It has been shown that most of these limitations can be overcome by subjecting a material to large-scale deformation, as occurs during common machining operations. The chips produced during lathe machining of a variety of pure metals, steels, and other alloys are shown to be nanostructured with grain (crystal) sizes between 100 and 800 nm. The hardness of the chips is found to be significantly greater than that of the bulk material.

This communication proposes an original method to define a low-cost manufacturing process for hydraulic spool valves in the case of very low production rate. A valve is usually completely defined by three characteristic curves obtained by two tests: a pressure gain test and a flow gain test. The aim is to limit the number of tests and in particular to avoid the flow gain test that is quite long to achieve. The method only uses a single metrology operation and the pressure gain curve to manage the spool flanks grinding while ensuring the specified hydraulic characteristics. The method is established by a model-based approach. It is then validated by experimental tests on two different valves.

The use of antibiotics in the community harms the environment. Due to the use of antibiotics is a risk of antibiotic resistance. Photodegradation was a method that could be used to reduce this impact. Photodegradation is a decomposition process using photon energy assistance. The photodegradation process requires a photocatalyst, which is a semiconductor material when subjected to an energy photon. This jump of electrons causes electron holes that can interact with water solvents to form radicals. TiO2 is the most common photocatalyst that is used for the destruction of pollutants in aqueous solutions. Photochemically, TiO2 is a stable, non-toxic, widely available, and low-cost manufacturing process. Increasing the concentration of TiO2 catalyst will also increase the photodegradation activity of antibiotics, and the longer time of the irradiation time will increase the antibiotic degradation.
