An optimized study of tapered polymer optical fiber (POF) for measurement of different concentration of ethanol in deionized water (0.5%-3.5%) is proposed and demonstrated. This sensor operated based on evanescent wave absorption principle. The cladding of PMMA based POF is removed using organic solvents which can be used to create tapered POF. The unclad length around 1 cm and 3 cm as well as the waist diameters of POF in the range of 5 mm and 8 mm were compared for their efficiency as an ethanol sensor based on power output ratio values. Tapered POF with smaller waist diameter and longer tapered length showed higher sensitivity as ethanol sensor. Therefore, by tailoring the length and tapered diameter of POF, high sensitivity of ethanol sensor can be fabricated.

A surface-plasmon-resonance-based fiber device is proposed for highly sensitive relative humidity (RH) sensing and human breath monitoring. The device is fabricated by using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film and gold coating on the flat surface of a side-polished polymer optical fiber. The thickness and refractive index of the PVA coating are sensitive to environmental humidity, and thus the resonant wavelength of the proposed device exhibits a redshift as the RH increases. Experimental results demonstrate an average sensitivity of 4.98 nm/RH% across an ambient RH ranging from 40% to 90%. In particular, the sensor exhibits a linear response between 75% and 90% RH, with a sensitivity of 10.15 nm/RH%. The device is suitable for human breath tests and shows an average wavelength shift of up to 228.20 nm, which is 10 times larger than that of a silica-fiber-based humidity sensor. The corresponding response and recovery times are determined to be 0.44 s and 0.86 s, respectively. The proposed sensor has significant potential for a variety of practical applications, such as intensive care and human health analysis.

Polymer Optical Fiber is opted as the most suitable medium for short haul communication system since it has lower cost and low loss for limited distance of transmission compared to glass fiber. This topic aims to show an alternative, green-technology based, economic and user-oriented communication passive device specifically a directional coupler by lapping tapered-fibers technique. This developed device is using designed geometrical blocks with integration of tapering effect, Dc, macro-bending, Rc, force exertion unto the coupling region, Fc, and etching lengths of the cores, Le to gain different splitting ratios, i.e., 50:50 and 90:10 experimentally by using the designed geometrical blocks with varied bending radii that affects the radiation of evanescent wave and to relate the integration of Couple Mode Theory and Hertz’s Law to obtain optimum coupling efficiency. The development may be an option to current device that are less user-friendly and fragile. This device is developed as a green technology-based device as an option for higher speed communication devices since the materials using in the development is safe, harmless, and inexpensive.
