Two models of the yaw behavior of horizontal axis wind turbines are presented and discussed. Emphasis in this paper is on the description of the models and underlying assumptions with details of the equations and solution methods referenced in technical reports. The more complex model (YawDyn) considers the coupling of blade flap motions and yaw motions which result from temporal and spatial variations in the approaching wind speed. The new methods are unique in that they simultaneously model the effects of skewed wake aerodynamics and blade stall. Both of these effects must be considered if yaw behavior is to be adequately understood. The models are validated by comparison with other prediction techniques, wind tunnel tests and full-scale atmospheric tests. In all cases the models are shown to give excellent qualitative agreement and reasonable quantitative agreement. It is concluded that the new models represent a significant improvement in the methods available to the wind turbine designer for understanding yaw loads and motions.

Delocutives that serve for designation of speech act are distinguished in the paper as special kind of words. They deal with speakers’ metalinguistic activity and have different nature. Word-formative structure of these derivatives is considered and their semantic characteristics is given. Special attention is paied to “postphrasal” delocutives. It is concluded that delocutives are an open group of words that is ever-growing in the modern Russian speech. The development of new methods of another’s speech transmission and formation of its new models is connected with the growth of this word group. Delocutives are described as lexical items that give an interpreting of speakers’ verbal behavior, in this regard evaluative semantic component is observed in their meaning.

The biology of aging is challenging to study, particularly in humans. As a result, model organisms are used to approximate the physiological context of aging in humans. However, the best model organisms remain expensive and time-consuming to use. More importantly, they may not reflect directly on the process of aging in people. Human cell culture provides an alternative, but many functional signs of aging occur at the level of tissues rather than cells and are therefore not readily apparent in traditional cell culture models. Organoids have the potential to effectively balance between the strengths and weaknesses of traditional models of aging. They have sufficient complexity to capture relevant signs of aging at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels, while presenting an experimentally tractable alternative to animal studies. Organoid systems have been developed to model many human tissues and diseases. Here we provide a perspective on the potential for organoids to serve as models for aging and describe how current organoid techniques could be applied to aging research.

Ampelography, the botanical discipline dedicated to the identification and classification of grapevine cultivars, was grounded on the description of morphological characters and more recently is based on the application of DNA polymorphisms. New methods of image analysis may help to optimize morphological approaches in ampelography. The objective of this study was the classification of representative cultivars of Vitis vinifera conserved in the Spanish collection of IMIDRA according to seed shape. Thirty eight cultivars representing the diversity of this collection were analyzed. A consensus seed silhouette was defined for each cultivar representing the geometric figure that better adjusted to their seed shape. All the cultivars tested were classified in ten morphological groups, each corresponding to a new model. The models are geometric figures defined by equations and similarity to each model is evaluated by quantification of percent of the area shared by the two figures, the seed and the model (J index). The comparison of seed images with geometric models is a rapid and convenient method to classify cultivars. A large proportion of the collection may be classified according to the new models described and the method permits to find new models according to seed shape in other cultivars.

Semiparametric and nonparametric estimation have attracted a great deal of attention from statisticians and theoretical econometricians in the past decade. Various new models have been proposed, and new methods for estimating those models have been suggested. These new models and methods are scattered in various academic journals and are not easily accessible to other researchers. Moreover, the new methods are technical, not easily understood by nonexperts such as graduate students and applied econometricians. Horowitz has two goals in his book Semiparametric Methods in Econometrics. First, he wants to provide a central place for those who want to check out the semiparametric literature. Second, he wants to present technical materials in a nontechnical way so that graduate students and applied econometricians who often do not have expertise in this area can comprehend the new methods. In my view, Horowitz has achieved both goals.
