ABSTRACTThermoelectric properties of low dimensional structures based on PbTe/PbSrTe-multiple quantum-well (MQW)-structures with regard to the structural dimensions, doping profiles and levels are presented. Interband transition energies and barrier band-gap are determined from IR-transmission spectra and compared with Kronig-Penney calculations. The influence of the data evaluation method to obtain the 2D power factor will be discussed. The thermoelectrical data of our layers show a more modest enhancement in the power factor σS2 compared with former publications and are in good agreement with calculated data from Broido et al. [5]. The maximum allowed doping level for modulation doped MQW structures is determined. Thermal conductivity measurements show that a ZT enhancement can be achieved by reducing the thermal conductivity due to interface scattering. Additionally promising lead chalcogenide based superlattices for an increased 3D figure of merit are presented.

AbstractLow-dimensional materials have recently attracted much interest as thermoelectric materials because of their charge carrier confinement leading to thermoelectric performance enhancement. Carbon nanotubes are promising candidates because of their one-dimensionality in addition to their unique advantages such as flexibility and light weight. However, preserving the large power factor of individual carbon nanotubes in macroscopic assemblies has been challenging, primarily due to poor sample morphology and a lack of proper Fermi energy tuning. Here, we report an ultrahigh value of power factor (14 ± 5 mW m−1 K−2) for macroscopic weavable fibers of aligned carbon nanotubes with ultrahigh electrical and thermal conductivity. The observed giant power factor originates from the ultrahigh electrical conductivity achieved through excellent sample morphology, combined with an enhanced Seebeck coefficient through Fermi energy tuning. We fabricate a textile thermoelectric generator based on these carbon nanotube fibers, which demonstrates high thermoelectric performance, weavability, and scalability. The giant power factor we observe make these fibers strong candidates for the emerging field of thermoelectric active cooling, which requires a large thermoelectric power factor and a large thermal conductivity at the same time.

Doping Sn into the Cu2Te lattice can synergistically enhance the power factor and decrease thermal conductivity, leading to remarkably optimized zTs. The lone pair electrons from the 5s orbital of Sn can increase the DOS near the Fermi level of Cu2Te to promote PF and reduce κe by decreasing the carrier concentration. This study explores a scalable strategy to optimize the thermoelectric performance for intrinsically highly degenerate semiconductors.

In this work, we use first principles DFT calculations, anharmonic phonon scatter theory and Boltzmann transport method, to predict a comprehensive study on the thermoelectric properties as electronic and phonon transport of layered LaSe2 crystal. The flat-and-dispersive type band structure of LaSe2 crystal offers a high power factor. In the other hand, low lattice thermal conductivity is revealed in LaSe2 semiconductor, combined with its high power factor, the LaSe2 crystal is considered a promising thermoelectric material. It is demonstrated that p-type LaSe2 could be optimized to exhibit outstanding thermoelectric performance with a maximum ZT value of 1.41 at 1100K. Explored by density functional theory calculations, the high ZT value is due to its high Seebeck coefficient S, high electrical conductivity, and low lattice thermal conductivity .

The strong interplay between magnetism and transport can tune the thermoelectric properties in chalcogenides and oxides. In the case of ferromagnetic CoS 2 pyrite, it was previously shown that the power factor is large at room temperature, reaching 1 mW m −1  K −2 and abruptly increases for temperatures below the Curie transition ( T C ), an increase potentially due to a magnonic effect on the Seebeck ( S ) coefficient. The too large thermal conductivity approximately equal to 10.5 W m −1  K −1 at room temperature prevents this pyrite from being a good thermoelectric material. In this work, samples belonging to the Co 1− x Fe x S 2 pyrite family ( x  = 0, 0.15 and 0.30) have thus been investigated in order to modify the thermal properties by the introduction of disorder on the Co site. We show here that the thermal conductivity can indeed be reduced by such a substitution, but that this substitution predominantly induces a reduction of the electronic part of the thermal conductivity and not of the lattice part. Interestingly, the magnonic contribution to S below T C disappears as x increases, while at high T , S tends to a very similar value (close to −42 µV K −1 ) for all the samples investigated. Thermoelectric is a device that converts heat into electricity. As thermodynamically it is not possible to make device which is 100 percent efficient, some amount of energy is wasted in the form of heat. Thermoelectric materials can play a major role in harnessing such waste energy. Although thermoelectric is a useful device still its efficiency is not good enough for commercialization. Therefore, lots of research have been carried out in finding out the best possible material, device geometry etc. There are thousands of papers describing various optimization processes. The present work reviews the basics of thermoelectric device parameters which determine the performance of the device and how to control these parameters for better thermoelectric efficiency. The efforts made to optimize parameters like power factor, thermal conductivity etc. have been summarized. Experimental results have been described with examples. Highest reported ZT values of various materials have been presented in this review.
