Cu–14 wt% Sn alloy was annealed at temperatures of 320 and 500 °C. The concentration of tin cinit in the copper-based matrix increased with annealing temperature. The annealed samples were subjected to high-pressure torsion (HPT) at 6 GPa, 5 turns, 1 rpa. HPT led to the refinement of Cu grains. The shape of the colonies of α + ε phases changed only slightly. The HPT-driven enrichment of the Cu-based solid solution with Sn atoms cHPT–cinit decreased with increasing cinit. The performed theoretical analysis explained this behavior of the HPT-driven enrichment.

Microstructure and hardness of ternary Al–Zn–Mg alloys were studied both in as cast state and after high pressure torsion (HPT) with 5 torsions (shear strain about 6). The size of (Al) grains and of reinforcing second phase precipitates decreases drastically after HPT reaching nanometer range. During HPT, the Zn- and Mg-rich supersaturated (Al) solid solution decomposes and reaches the equilibrium state corresponding to the room temperature. In the as cast state the hardness of the supersaturated solid solutions increases with increasing Zn and Mg content due to the solid-solution hardening. However, after HPT the work hardening and Hall-Petch hardening due to the decreasing grain size competes with softening due to the decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution. In the net effect, the severe plastic deformation results in softening of ternary Al–Zn– Mg alloys.

Structure and phase composition of binary Al–Zn, Al–Mg and ternary Al–Zn–Mg alloys were studied before and after high pressure torsion (HPT) with shear strain 300. The size of (Al) grains and crystals of reinforcing second phases decreases drastically after HPT reaching nanometer range. As a result of HPT, the Zn-rich (Al) supersaturated solid solution decomposes completely and reaches the equilibrium state corresponding to room temperature. The decomposition is less pronounced for Al–Mg and Al–Zn–Mg alloys. We conclude that the severe plastic deformation of supersaturated solid solutions can be considered as a balance between deformation-induced disordering and deformation-accelerated diffusion towards the equilibrium state.

Severely-deformed high-strength brasses were investigated by leveraging high-pressure torsion (HPT) processing in order to obtain more enhanced mechanical properties of copper alloys. Pure copper, binary Cu-Zn solid-solution alloys and high-strength brasses including aluminum and manganese additions were selected for experiments. For comparison of these materials, zinc equivalent parameter was used. These materials were subjected to the HPT processing, followed by hardness tests and tensile tests. The maximal hardness value of the nanostructured high-strength brass with β phase matrix was reached 420 HV. The HPT processed high-strength brass with β phase matrix showed significant increase in the yield stress and tensile strength with sacrificing ductility. The tensile specimen of the high-strength brass with β phase matrix was fractured before initiation of necking. It was found that utilizing β phase matrix is also beneficial for controlling enhanced strength of high-strength copper alloys for not only casting process but also severe plastic deformation.

The Ni-4at%W alloys was prepared with cold crucible levitation, subsequent levitation re-melting and high pressure torsion (HPT) intensive deformation. In samples after levitation precipitates of Ni4W phase as well as grain boundary continuous phase were formed. Levitation re-melting resulted in partial dissolution of the precipitates, increasing W content in the matrix and lead to the microstructure refinement. The deformation by HPT, in the range of 300-400%, lead to the lead to the homogenization of the solid solution and partial decomposition of the alloys into pure Ni and W. In the homogenous majority of the sample the microstructure transformed from dendrite microstructure to faceted grains. The analysis of the grains sizes and shapes showed that the average grain size in the sample re-melted by levitation was twice the grain size of the sample only prepared with CCLM. Also, the grains in this sample were elongated by 50-60% in one direction, while in the sample prepared by CCLM they were equiaxial. As the nominal composition of the alloys in both cases was the same, differences observed in the microstructure after re-melting and HPT processing must result only from the differences in the cooling rate leading to small differences in W content in solid solution and phase composition after solidification. High rate of cooling in the levitation methods resulted in Ni4W metastable phase precipitation as well as in the refinement of the microstructure, stronger after additional re-melting of the alloy by levitation.
