Mine wastewater (MW) is often rich in heavy metals that can have measurable effects on humans. The storage and treatment of MW remains a challenge for most mining companies. Iron (Fe) in MW was removed by using extracts from Eucalyptus globulus (EG); Callistemon viminalis (CV); and Persea americana (AS). Fe was removed from MW samples with an initial concentration of 5.53 mg Fe mL−1; 4.63 mg Fe mL−1 and 4.40 mg Fe mL−1 using EG leaves, CV flowers and AS seed extracts, respectively. Conditions of the MW decontamination were studied by varying the dosage of the plant extracts, the temperature of the medium and the contact time between the MW and the plant extracts. Undiluted plant extracts—which were mixed with the MW and heated at 45 °C for 3 h—gave the highest Fe-removal efficiency for CV (70%) and AS (53%) extracts, respectively. Similarly, EG extracts, albeit heated at 25 °C, showed a higher Fe-removal efficiency (85%) than the CV and AS extracts at low to high temperatures. The residual Fe concentration in the MW was 0.83 mg Fe mL−1, 1.39 mg Fe mL−1 and 2.07 mg Fe mL−1 for EG, CV and AS extracts, respectively. Residue solid-phase deposits from the precipitation reaction of the MW with the plant extracts were collected and analyzed. Fe was among the byproducts detected in the deposited material. The characterization of the annealed solid-phase deposits revealed Fe precipitates as maghemite-C (Fe2O3) and magnetite (FeFe2O4) nanoparticles. Therefore, the MW quality and form were improved, making it reusable for other purposes.

The aim of the present work is to study and compare antidiabetic activity of extracts from Catharentus roseus, Persea americana, and Eucalyptus globulus as well as their mechanism of action. The aqueous and methanolic plant extracts were respectively prepared by decoction and maceration. The phytochemical screening was done by standard methods. The extracts were subsequently tested in vivo on Wistar albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) with temporary hyperglycemia. The methanolic extract of P. americana leaves showing the best activity was selected for the antidiabetic test at doses 37.5, 75 and 150 mg/kg. For that purpose, permanent diabetes mellitus was induced in rats fasted overnight by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (150 mg/kg). Hematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated from the cardiac puncture’s blood. The antidiabetic mechanism of action of the 6 extracts was performed by evaluating their inhibitory activity on alpha glucosidase, beta glucosidase and glucoamylase. Phytochemical analysis of aqueous and methanolic extracts revealed that all extracts contain phenols, anthraquinones and tannins. On the other hand, no extract contains sterols. All extracts showed hypoglycemic activities. The antidiabetic tests showed that the methanolic extract of P. americana caused a decrease in blood sugar level in all the treated rats with the dose of 150 mg / kg of body weight being the most effective, without any adverse side effect in the animals. All the tested extracts showed an inhibitory activity against alpha glucosidase and glucoamylase enzymes and have no inhibitory activity on beta glucosidase. The results of the present study demonstrate the antidiabetic properties of the tested plants through inhibitory effect on alpha glucosidase and glucoamylase enzymes with P. americana being the most active.

Research has been carried out entitled the effect of carrageenan addition Eucheuma cottonii and glycerol as edible coating of avocado fruit (Persea americana Mill.) From Takengon, Central Aceh Regency to extend storage time. This study aims to find out how the effect of the addition of carrageenan concentration variations Eucheuma cottonii and glycerol as edible coatings in extending the shelf life of avocados (Persea americana Mill.). The variations in the concentration of comparable carrageenan and glycerol used as edible coating are 2: 2%, 3: 2%, 4: 2%, 2: 3%, 3: 3% and 4: 3% in distilled water. The coating process is done by dipping avocados for 1 minute and stored at room temperature for 10 days in an open container. The results showed that the physical appearance of avocados was best obtained from edible coating with variations in concentrations of 2: 2%, 2: 3% and 3: 3% (carrageenan: glycerol) characterized by bright flesh color, hard texture, fresh aroma and good taste, while avocados at carrageenan concentrations and glycerol 3: 2%, 4: 2% and 4: 3% indicate poor conditions and are not suitable for consumption. Avocados with edible coating 2: 2%, 2: 3% and 3: 3% were then tested and obtained by weight loss in a row of 11.562%, 8.815% and 9.34%, moisture content 73.73%, 65.77% and 77.84%, reducing sugar levels 1.15%, 0.80% and 0.97% and vitamin C levels 0.17%, 0.16% and 0.31%.
