Quantitative data were collected and analysed on 10 metric characters from F1s and F2s of sixteen green gram (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) hybrids, developed from ten genetically diverse parents, to obtain information on variability, heritability, coheritability, and genotypic and phenotypic correlations. The increased genetic variability of F2 over F1 was observed for plant height, number of primary branches, pods/cluster, pods/plant, pod length and harvest index, suggesting the greater segregation and recombination of genes governing these characters. The high broad-sense heritability coupled with high genetic advance for plant height, days to 50% flowering and pod length in both F1s and F2s indicated the predominant role of additive gene action in their expression. The genotypic and phenotypic correlations between F1 and F2 were significant and positive for seven characters. The coheritability estimates between F1 and F2 had values of over 0.25 and were positive for six characters, but not for seed yield/plant, days to 50% flowering, clusters/plant or pods/plant. Within the F1 and F2 generations, seed yield/plant showed significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with eight characters. The seed yield in green gram could be easily enhanced by practising selection on plant height, number of primary branches, pods/cluster, pod length and harvest index.

Twenty one crosses resulting from 7 x 7 diallel excluding reciprocal were studied to know the magnitude of heterosis over better parent and standard variety for yield and its attributing characters in rabi mungbean. The highest heterosis to the extent of 37.23% over the check Co-4 and 82.20 % over the check GBM-1 was observed in cross combination Co-4 x Meha for seed yield per plant, which also exhibited high heterosis percentage for yield and yield components. The promising hybrids viz. Co-4 x Meha, Co-4 x GBM-1, GBM-1 x Meha and Rm-9-129 x Co-4 were identified which have great potential to exploit the hybrid vigour or to isolate the desirable segregants for the development of rabi mungbean varieties with chilling tolerant ability or photo-thermo insensitivity, so as to exploit potential of rabi mungbean in heavy rainfall zone as rice fallows.

The present investigation was carried out with 24 progenies in F4 generation of interspecific cross derivatives of Vigna radiata cv. VBN(Gg)2 x Vigna mungo cv. Mash 114 to study the variability and association among the yield and the yield component traits. A set of 24 F4 progenies from the interspecific cross between greengram (VBN(Gg)2) and blackgram (Mash 114) formed the basic genetic material for the present investigation. Variability studies recorded high Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation (PCV) and Genotypic Coefficient of Variation (GCV) for the traits viz., number of branches/ plant, number of clusters/ plant, number of pods/ plant and seed yield /plant. High heritability (h2) along with high genetic advance as per cent of mean (GAM) were recorded for the traits, plant height, number of clusters/ plant, number of pods/ plant and seed yield/ plant. Association studies revealed that the trait number of pods/ plant alone recorded high direct positive effect on seed yield/ plant. The results indicated that high magnitude of variability was present among the interspecific progenies for these traits. The high heritability and genetic advance might be due to presence of additive gene action. Hence selection based on these traits might be effective for genetic improvement among the interspecific progenies of Vigna radiata x Vigna mungo. The study indicates that the trait, number of pods / plant should be given due importance in selection programme for seed yield improvement in the interspecific progenies of greengram and blackgram.
