Putrescine and carnauba wax pretreatments alleviate chilling injury, enhance shelf life and preserve pomegranate fruit quality during cold storage

Okra possesses a short shelf-life which limits its marketability, thereby, the present study investigates the individual and combined effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the postharvest storage life of okra. The treated/ untreated okra samples were stored at ambient (i.e., 27 °C) and low (i.e., 7 °C) temperatures for eight and 20 days, respectively. Results revealed that the 1-MCP and/or MAP treatment successfully inhibited fruit softening, reduction in mucilage viscosity, and color degradation (hue angle, ∆E, and BI) in the product resulting in a longer period of shelf-life. However, MAP with or without 1-MCP was more effective to reduce weight loss in okra stored at both ambient and cold storage conditions. Additionally, ascorbic acid and total antioxidants were also retained in 1-MCP with MAP during cold storage. The 1-MCP in combination with MAP effectively suppressed respiration rate and ethylene production for four days and eight days at 27 °C and 7 °C temperature conditions, respectively. According to the results, relatively less chilling injury stress also resulted when 1-MCP combined with MAP. The combined treatment of okra pods with 1-MCP and MAP maintained the visual quality of the product in terms of overall acceptability for four days at 20 °C and 20 days at 7 °C.

AbstractApplication of cold storage temperatures below optimum induces a high risk and threat of chilling injury (CI) in the case of sensitive commodities. Sweet pepper belongs to this group of vegetables, so our main objective was to investigate and monitor the effect of non-optimal temperatures (2.5 and 5 °C) induced stress (chilling injury) on kápia type sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) during its postharvest storage by nondestructive quality measuring methods. Fresh, semi-matured (reddish-green colored) samples of ‘Kapitány F1’ cultivar were stored at 2.5, 5 and 10 °C for 7 d followed by 7 d shelf-life. Nondestructive texture measurements were carried out by a purpose built tabletop acoustic stiffness device. Surface color and chlorophyll content related quality indices were evaluated by a chroma meter, a DA-meter® and a chlorophyll fluorescence imaging system. High resolution digital pictures were captured and analyzed for possible CI defects by means of surface color values (normalized RGB, hue and saturation). According to our results, the evaluated quality indices (DA-index®, acoustic stiffness coefficient, surface color parameters; F0, Fm, Fv and Fv/Fm chlorophyll fluorescence parameters) clearly represented the temperature dependent quality changes during low temperature storage, subsequently followed by ambient shelf-life. Samples stored under and at 5 °C showed the chilling temperature stressed symptoms of delayed and partly retarded postharvest ripening, even under simulated shelf-life conditions, but without the onset and manifestation of the characteristic visible symptoms of chilling injury. This may raise doubts and suggest possible future research areas regarding the role of non-optimal cold storage temperatures induced stress, the effect of chilling injury contributing factors and consequences.

Oriental melons have a relatively short shelf life as they are harvested during the summer season and susceptible to cold-induced injuries. Typical chilling injury when stored at 4 °C is expressed as browning of the fruit suture. To prolong the shelf life and reduce browning of the fruit, the effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), X-tend modified atmosphere (MA)/modified humidity (MH) bulk packaging (XF), and polyethylene (PE) packaging, on oriental melons were investigated during storage at 4 °C and 10 °C for 14 days and under retail display conditions at 20 °C. The O2 concentrations in PE packages stored at 4 °C and 10 °C ranged from 17.4 to 18.5%, whereas those in XF packages were reduced to 16.3–16.6%. The CO2 content of XF package (4.2–4.6%) was higher than that of PE package (1.4–1.9%) stored at 4 °C or 10 °C. Relative humidity (RH) saturated in the PE packages but not in the XF packages after seven days of storage. Furthermore, PE packages performed better at maintaining melon weight and firmness than XF packages during storage at 10 °C for 14 days and under retail display conditions at 20 °C. PE and XF packages effectively reduced the browning index of the peel and white linear sutures of oriental melons compared with the unpackaged control during cold storage at 4 °C, and this observation was maintained at the retail display condition at 20 °C. The enhanced CO2 levels, reduced O2 levels, and optimal RH values that were provided by the MAP, prevented the browning symptoms, and improved the marketability and shelf life of oriental melons.

Abstract Mini kiwi fruits are tasty and contain valuable nutrients - vitamin, micro end macroelements and polyphenols. The tested cultivars (Sientiabrskaja, Geneva, Issai, Ken’s Red) belong to two species of Actinidia (A. arguta and A. kolomikta), which tolerate well the conditions of a temperate climate with negative temperatures in winter. The effect of postharvest shock cooling on fruit quality was investigated after 6 weeks of storage in CA and then after 5 days of shelf life. Shock cooling of fruit after harvest reduced adverse changes in fruit quality after storage in CA cold storage and shelf life. They were firmer, more puncture resistant, and retained more L-ascorbic acid and polyphenols. After 6 weeks of cold storage in CA, eight types of fungi and molds were found that caused the mycotoxins patulin, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone were found in the fruit of all cultivars. Fruits of the Ken’s Red cultivar were the most firm and puncture resistant, the darkest, and contained the most anthocyanins and the least L-ascorbic acid. In contrast, fruits of the cultivar Sientaibrskaja were the least suitable for storage and transport.

A comparative study between melting flesh peach fruit (Prunus persica L. Batsch cvs. Royal Glory and Morettini No 2) with contrasting tissue firmness during their on-tree ripening was conducted. Such fruit were cold stored (0 °C) for 4 and 6 weeks, and subsequently transferred at 25 °C (shelf life) for up to 5 days and evaluated for quality attributes and cell wall physicochemical properties. Data were partly unexpected, since fruit of the soft cultivar (Morettini No 2) were characterized by lower exo- and endo-PG activity, lower amounts of ethylene evolution, as well as higher amounts of endogenous calcium bound in the cell wall compared to fruit of the firmer cultivar (Royal Glory). These differences may be attributed to the incidence of chilling injury symptoms, evident as loss of juiciness in Morettini No 2 fruit, while Royal Glory fruit were characterized by acceptable appearance and eating quality even after 6 weeks cold storage plus 5 days shelf life, as the fruit softened gradually without cell rupture. Overall results showed that no direct relationship between cell wall physicochemical properties and sensory attributes can be established, indicating the complexity of peach fruit ripening. Since fruit of both cultivars presented similar tissue firmness after 5 days shelf life an attempt to distinguish normal peach fruit softening from cell rupture-chilling injury also has been made in the current study.
