A new alkaloid C20H24N2O (taberpsychine) obtained from Venezuelan T. psychotrifolia is shown to have structure 5. The Hofmann degradation products of taberpsychine and its dihydro derivative are discussed. Two other bases isolated are affinine and 16-epi-vobasinic acid, the latter for the first time as a natural product.

Abstract 2-Isobutyl-1 ,3-thiazole and its 4,5-dihydro derivative were identified in the preorbital gland secretions of the grey duiker, Sylvicapra grimmia, and the red duiker, Cephalophus natalensis, but are absent from the preorbital secretion of the blue duiker, C. monticola. These two compounds which are present in high, but varying concentrations in the secretions of male grey duikers, are present in low concentrations in the secretions of females. This seems to be the only consistent significant difference between the secretions of male and female grey duikers and together with the fact that only males mark out their territories, was construed as evidence in favour of these two compounds playing a significant role in the territorial behaviour of male grey duikers.

4,4′-Bis(dicyanomethylene)bicyclohexylidine and its dihydro derivative, 4,4′-bis(dicyanomethylene)bicyclohexyl were prepared from the condensation of malononitrile with the corresponding diketone. Bicyclohexylidene-4,4′-dione was synthesized from the monoketal of cyclohexanedione via the symmetric azosulfide. The uv spectra of the 4,4′-bis(dicyanomethylene)bicyclohexylidine and related model compounds indicate the presence of a long range interaction between the dicyanomethylene groups of the title compound.

11-Oxotetrahydrorhombifoline (I) has been isolated from the alkaloidal extract of the bark of Ormosia coutinhoi, and its dihydro derivative II has been prepared. An examination of the mass spectra of these compounds and of their 3,3-d2 derivatives has led to the elucidation of the course of the major electron impact induced fragmentations undergone by the molecules. The main fragmentation of I leads to loss of C3H5 from the side chain to form an ion of m/e 221, with a minor path involving a central fission of the molecular ion to form an ion of m/e 150. The mass spectrum of II shows that the loss of C3H7 to form the ion of m/e 221 is a minor process, the main fragmentation reaction involving a central fission to form an ion of m/e 152 analogous to the ion of m/e 150 from I. This change in the spectrum is shown to be consistent with predictions based on the quasi-equilibrium theory of mass spectra.
