Context:Fatigue of the shoulder rotator muscles may negatively affect joint position sense (JPS) and ultimately lead to injury.Objective:Recovery of shoulder JPS after muscle fatigue.Design:A repeated-measures study.Setting:Musculoskeletal research laboratory.Patients:Thirteen subjects participated in joint position error tests and isokinetic concentric strength assessment in shoulder rotation, before and after rotator muscle fatigue.Interventions:Local muscle fatigue was induced using isokinetic concentric contractions of the shoulder rotator muscles.Main Outcome Measurements:Shoulder rotator strength and JPS error signals were measured before fatigue, immediately after fatigue, and every ten minutes thereafter for one hour.Results:Before shoulder rotation muscle fatigue, the accuracy of shoulder JPS was 2.79 ± 1.67 degrees. After muscle fatigue, the accuracy decreased to 6.39 ± 2.90 degrees. Shoulder JPS was influenced up to 40 minutes after muscle fatigue, but shoulder strength was only affected for 10 minutes after muscle fatigue.Conclusions:Proprioceptive recovery was slower than strength following fatigue of the shoulder rotators.

The present study investigated the effect of taping and the semi-rigid ankle brace on ankle joint position sense. Sixteen healthy women (20.8 ± 2.3 years old) actively placed the ankle in a target position. The experimental conditions were: 1) wearing no orthosis device, 2) using semi-rigid brace, and 3) wearing ankle taping. Absolute error (AE) and variable error (VE) were calculated to obtain the joint position sense. We found an interaction effect between condition and target angle at 15o of plantar flexion for the variable VE, which showed smaller errors during the use of taping and semi-rigid brace. In conclusion, the use of ankle joint orthoses, whether taping or semi-rigid brace, decrease the variability of the position sense at 15o of plantar flexion, potentially decreasing ankle sprains occurrence.

Abstract Background: Ballet dancers are at high risk of ankle sprain. As a result, effective training programs are required for ballet dancers to minimize injury occurrence and improve their balance ability. Our purpose was to investigate the effects of a 6-week integrated training program on the ankle joint position sense and postural stability in ballet dancers.Methods: Twenty-nine female ballet dancers were recruited to the study. Sixteen of the dancers underwent a 6-week integrated training program consisting of plyometric, proprioception and core stability exercises. The remaining ballet dancers performed no additional training, but continued regular ballet practice as usual. For both groups, ankle joint position sensing tests were performed before and after training. Furthermore, for the training group, the postural stability was assessed by measuring the average speed of the center of pressure (COP) and the maximum ankle joint displacements while performing grand plie (deep squatting) and releve en demi-pointe (standing on balls of foot) movements.Results: After 6 weeks, both groups showed significantly smaller absolute ankle joint reposition errors in plantarflexion and eversion. Furthermore, the training group showed a significantly smaller ankle joint reposition error in dorsiflexion. The training group also showed a significantly slower average COP speed and smaller maximum COP displacement in the medial-lateral direction.Conclusions: The 6-week integrated training program improved the ankle joint position sense in dorsiflexion and the postural control in the medial-lateral direction while performing grand-plie and releve en demi-pointe movements. Thus, this integrated training program can be suggested for dancers in order to improve ankle position sense and postural stability during ballet movements.

Objective:To compare the ankle-joint position-sense patterns of gymnasts and nongymnasts.Design:Proprioceptive ability was evaluated with active and passive angle-reproduction tests.Participants:40 subjects assigned to 2 groups: group 1 (n = 20), healthy subjects, and group 2 (n = 20), teenage female gymnasts.Measurements:Joint-position sense was actively measured with a Cybex NORM™ isokinetic dynamometer and passively with a proprioception-testing device.Results:A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the mean values of the gymnasts’ and controls’ ankles. Results revealed statistically significant differences (P < .05) between the 2 groups. No statistically significant difference between the dominant and nondominant ankles in the 2 groups was observed.Conclusions:The results suggest that extensive training might affect ankle-joint position sense, but genetics and natural selection could be the reason. It is thought that athletes are able to develop enhanced neurosensory pathways as a result of long-term training.

Proprioception, or joint position sense, probably plays an important role in shoulder joint function. In this study, we assessed the effect of muscle fatigue on shoulder proprioception in 20 volunteers with no shoulder abnormalities. Shoulder proprioception was measured as the threshold to first detection of humeral rotation with the joint at 90° of abduction and 90° of external rotation. Subjects were tested while rested, exercised on a isokinetic testing machine until fatigued, and then retested in an identical fashion. Both shoulders were tested, and the order of dominant and non-dominant shoulder was randomized. Shoulder proprioception was analyzed for its dependence on arm dominance, direction of rotation, and muscle fatigue. Subjects detected external rotation after significantly less movement than they did internal rotation. Overall, before exercise, motion was detected after a mean of 0.92° of rotation. After exercise, this threshold to detection of movement increased to 1.59°, an increase of 73%. This significant increase occurred with both internal and external rotation. The decrease in proprioceptive sense with muscle fatigue may play a role in decreasing athletic performance and in fatigue-related shoulder dysfunction. It remains to be determined if training can lessen this loss in position sense.
