Control Methodology

The objective of this paper is to develop a sustainable integrated process design and control methodology for a distillation column system. The sustainable integrated process design and control problem for a distillation column system is typically formulated as a mathematical programming (optimization with constraints) problem, and solved by decomposing it to six sequential hierarchical sub-problems: (i) pre-analysis, (ii) design analysis, (iii) controller design analysis, (iv) sustainability analysis, (v) detailed economics analysis and (vi) final selection and verification. The results through case study of benzene-toluene separation process shows the proposed methodology is capable to find the optimal solution that satisfies design, control, sustainability and economic criteria in a simple and efficient way.

China is a big industrial energy consuming country. The largest proportion of energy consuming is the operations of separation in chemical industry, and the energy consumption of the distillation is the highest in separation. Therefore, it is very important to research energy-saving issues of the process of distillation in today's circumstances of the energy shortage. This article describes the model of heat pump distillation column,and its characteristics, uses static simulation programs to simulate operating conditions in the atmospheric pressure for the benzene-toluene material system, and studys effects of the different feed states on the energy-saving of heat pump distillation column. The results will be compared with the conventional distillation column, and it was showed that for benzene-toluene system, the heat pump distillation column is more remarkable than the conventional distillation column in energy savings, and its energy saving rate can reach 46%.

Abstract For the real time monitoring of a Reactive Distillation Column (RDC), a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based soft sensor has been proposed to estimate the bottoms product composition of the RDC for the synthesis of n-Butyl Acetate using esterification reaction. This soft sensor acts as a measuring element in a closed loop involving a PI controller for the direct control of the RDC’s product concentration. The RNN acts as a dynamic network, which works on the sequential input data and output data with a recurrent connection. While using the RNN based soft sensor in the open loop, it has been observed that the sensor estimated the composition of butyl acetate in the bottoms with such an accuracy that it can be used for the control purpose. Closed loop results demonstrated that the system has been showing precise controlled results and soft sensor is showing small prediction Mean Square Error (MSE) when disturbances in feed flow rate and set point changes are introduced.

Background: Process simulation has been extensively used in recent years to design, evaluate or optimize processes, systems and specific operations of the chemical industry and its related disciplines. Currently, CHEMCAD® constitute one of the most used process simulators because of the great number of chemical and petrochemical processes that can be simulated.Method: The simulation of the production process of styrene via catalytic dehydrogenation of ethyl-benzene is carried out by using the process simulator CHEMCAD® version 5.2.0, in order to determine the composition and mass flow-rate of each process involved in the production, as well as the main operating parameters of the equipment used. Two sensitivity studies were carried out: firstly, the influence of the temperature and pressure values applied at the LLV Separator on the amounts of ethyl-benzene and styrene to be obtained by the intermediate and top currents of this equipment; secondly, the influence of the operating pressure of the Distillation Column No. 1 (benzene-toluene column) on the quantity of ethyl-benzene and styrene obtained at the bottom stream. The simulating software MATLAB® version 7.8.0 was used to process the results obtained.Results: Around 9234.436 kg/h of styrene is obtained in the last distillation column with 99.6% purity. Additionally, it was found that the water is the main impurity found on this stream, which represents 0.35% of the weight.Conclusions: The LLV Separator must operate at a low temperature (5 – 10 ºC) and at a relatively high pressure (10 bar), whereas the Distillation Column No. 1 must work at a pressure near atmospheric (1.0 bar), or preferably under vacuum conditions in order to obtain the highest yields of styrene and ethyl-benzene.

Reduction Of Energy Consumption

The paper presents the analysis of the thermal efficiency of a dividing wall distillation column and the influence of the feed composition on the reduction of energy consumption compared to a classical scheme of multicomponent mixture separation. The study relays on rigorous simulations in HYSYSTM using thermodynamically equivalent schemes. A case study is presented for the separation of a hydrocarbon mixture: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene separated in three products in a dividing wall column. The dividing wall column solution led to about 40 % energy saving. The efficiency of a dividing wall column increases when the middle component is in large amount in the feed.
