The assistance of ultrasonic vibration during the friction stir welding (FSW) process has been verified as an effective approach for the improvement of joint strength. In the present study, experimentation on Al/Mg dissimilar alloys in butt joint configuration is implemented by employing FSW with and without the assistance of ultrasonic vibration. An optimized tool shoulder diameter of 12 mm is utilized, and the ultrasonic vibration is applied perpendicularly onto the tool along the welding direction, which is named UVaFSW. The results of joint appearance and macrostructure, characteristics of the intermetallic compounds (IMCs), as well as joint strength and fracture appearance are compared between Al/Mg FSW joints with and without ultrasonic vibration. It is demonstrated that the material intermixing between Al and Mg alloys is substantially strengthened in the UVaFSW joint compared with that in the FSW joint. Additionally, the ultrasonic vibration can be beneficial for the reduction of IMC thickness, as well as the formation of intermittently distributed IMC phases at the Al–Mg bonding interface. Consequently, the mechanical properties of Al/Mg FSW joints are significantly improved with the assistance of ultrasonic vibration. The maximum ultimate tensile strength is 206 MPa at tool rotation speed of 800 rpm and welding speed of 50 mm/min for the Al/Mg UVaFSW joint.

Titanium alloy TC1 and Aluminum alloy LF6 were jointed by friction stir welding (FSW), and the influence of process parameters on formation of weld surface, cross-section morphology and tensile strength were studied. The results show that, Titanium and Aluminum dissimilar alloy is difficult to be joined by FSW, and some defects such as cracks and grooves are easy to occur. When the rotational speed of stir head(n) is 750r/min and 950r/min, the welding speed(v) is 118mm/min or 150mm/min, a good formation of weld surface can be obtained, but the bonding of titanium/aluminum interface in the cross-section of weld joint is bad when n is 750r/min which results in a low strength joint. When n is 950r/min and v is 118mm/min，the strength of the FSW joint of Titanium/Aluminum dissimilar materials is 131MPa which is the highest．

AbstractTrailing intensive cooling with liquid nitrogen has successfully applied to friction stir welding of 2 mm thick 2060 Al-Li alloy. Welding temperature, plastic strain, residual stress and distortion of 2060 Al-Li alloy butt-joint are compared and discussed between conventional cooling and trailing intensive cooling using experimental and numerical simulation methods. The results reveal that trailing intensive cooling is beneficial to shrink high temperature area, reduce peak temperature and decrease plastic strain during friction stir welding process. In addition, the reduction degree of plastic strain outside weld is smaller than that inside weld. Welding distortion presents an anti-saddle shape. Compared with conventional cooling, the reductions of welding distortion and longitudinal residual stresses of welding joint under intense cooling reach 47.7 % and 23.8 %, respectively.

The use of aluminium alloys continues to grow in many applications to mention a few aerospace, automotive, electronics, electricity, construction and food packaging. With so much demand there is a new interest in welding of dissimilar aluminium alloys. Some of the welding techniques used to join dissimilar aluminium alloys include friction stir welding and TIG welding. The welding of dissimilar alloys affects the mechanical properties negatively due to porosity and cracking during the welding. This then suggests that there should be a process which can be used to improve the dissimilar alloys mechanical properties post its production. Friction stir processing was found to be one of the mechanical techniques that could be used to improve the mechanical properties of the material. This paper reports on the literature on the friction stir welding, TIG welding and friction stir processing techniques published so far, with the aim to identify the gap in the use of friction stir process as a post processing technique of the weld joints.
