The recent development of the Z-contrast imaging technique for the VG HB501 UX dedicated STEM, has added a high-resolution imaging facility to a microscope used mainly for microanalysis. This imaging technique not only provides a high-resolution reference image, but as it can be performed simultaneously with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), can be used to position the electron probe at the atomic scale. The spatial resolution of both the image and the energy loss spectrum can be identical, and in principle limited only by the 2.2 Å probe size of the microscope. There now exists, therefore, the possibility to perform chemical analysis of materials on the scale of single atomic columns or planes.In order to achieve atomic resolution energy loss spectroscopy, the range over which a fast electron can cause a particular excitation event, must be less than the interatomic spacing. This range is described classically by the impact parameter, b, which ranges from ~10 Å for the low loss region of the spectrum to <1Å for the core losses.

One design for a mobile offshore base is to link serially as many as five large semisubmersibles to form a platform long enough to support large aircraft. This paper investigates the linear, wave-induced response characteristics of serially-connected semisubmersibles. A major motivation of this study is to understand more completely the forces required to link semisubmersible modules. The impact of connector strategy and damping on the response, especially the connector forces, is investigated, and the response "modes" which contribute to the connector forces are evaluated in detail. It is shown that the response characteristics can be impacted significantly by the connection strategy, and that connector damping can be a significant source of energy loss when compared to radiation damping. The wet natural frequencies and normal modes are also determined and used to explain the response characteristics of different connection strategies. Although the analyses are based on a specific semisubmersible design, the results provide insight on how other systems of connected semisubmersibles would likely behave.

Cleaning coils can be an efficient way to reduce the need for reparations and maintain the functionality of a ventilation system. This study builds upon existing knowledge concerning the contamination of heat exchangers. Through field measurements on coils and heat-recovery units, a laboratory experiment on a coil, and a generic calculation example, this study determines the impact of sustained contamination on heat-recovery units with regards to energy use. Field measurements made before and after cleaning of heat exchangers show an average increase in the pressure drop by 12% and decrease in the thermal exchange efficiency by 8.1% due to mass deposited on the surface of the heat exchangers. Results from a laboratory test show a correlation between the mass deposited on a coil and (1) the increase in pressure drop over the coil, as well as (2) a diminishing heat exchange. Accumulating contamination on heat-recovery units in residential and commercial buildings (over time) is then linked to increasing pressure drop and diminishing thermal efficiency. With models based on these links, energy loss over time is calculated based on a generic calculation example in a realistic scenario. Practical application: The results from this study emphasize the need for maintenance of buildings with ventilation systems with coils, but more so those with heat-recovery units. The presented field measurements and laboratory study correlate energy loss with sustained accumulation of contaminants on coils and heat-recovery units. These results should serve as a recommendation to property owners considering maintenance of such units in their buildings.

Purpose This paper aims to develop thermal analysis method of thermal joints characterization. The impact on convection on thermal resistance analysis with use thermography for silver-based thermal joints were investigated for non-metallized and metalized semiconductor surfaces. Heat transfer efficiency depends on thermal conductivity; radiation was used to perform thermographic analysis; the convection is energy loss, so its removing might improve measurements accuracy. Design/methodology/approach Investigation of thermal joints analysis method was focused on determination of convection impact on thermal resistance thermographic analysis method. Measuring samples placed in vacuum chamber with lowered pressure requires transparent window for infrared radiation that is used for thermographic analysis. Impact of infrared window and convection on temperature measurements and thermal resistance were referred. Findings The results showed that the silicon window allowed to perform thermal analysis through, and the convection was heat transfer mode which create 15% energy loss. Originality/value It is possible to measure thermal resistance for silver-based thermal joints with convection eliminated to improve measurements accuracy.

In order to examine the dynamic mechanical properties, dynamic crack proposition process, and energy loss of fractured rock under dynamic loading, the specimens with different fracture dig angles were processed with Φ50 mm × 50 mm cylindrical sandstone, the impact loading test was conducted on 50 mm stem diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experiment platform, and the whole process of crack propagation and dynamic failure was recorded using a high-speed camera. As a result, the dynamic mechanical properties such as stress wave fluctuation characteristics, peak strength and stress-strain relationship, crack initiation angle, stress and other dependencies with prefabricated fracture angle of the prefabricated fracture specimens under high strain rate were obtained, and the incident energy, absorbed energy, and energy absorption rates were compared to investigate the energy loss law in the dynamic loading; on the contrary, the effects of different loading rates on the dynamic mechanical properties of the sandstone specimens were identified, and finally a set of findings were presented.
